P. Paolino Zanon

Verso le 12,20 del 12 luglio 2010, a Coatbridge al St. Andrew’s Hospice, dove era ricoverato da vari anni, si è spento il P. Paolino Zanon.
Aveva 96 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Vigonza (Padova) il 22.06.1914.
Entrò all'Istituto a Vicenza nel 1926. Era ancora vivo il Fondatore e P. Zanon «ricordò sempre con orgoglio di averlo conosciuto, di avere pregato con lui e di avere seguito il suo ideale missionario» (SX Gran Bretagna).
Percorse l'iter formativo allora vigente: I-IV ginnasio a Vicenza (1926-1930); V ginnasio a Grumone (1930-1931); il Noviziato a Parma (1931-1932), ammesso dal Beato Fondatore al quale aveva fatto domanda il 4.6.1931: «Eccellenza Reverendissima e Veneratissimo Superiore Generale, dopo aver compiuto regolarmente le classi ginnasiali nelle scuole apostoliche di Vicenza e di Cremona, desiderando la mia santificazione e sperando di poter giovare alle anime del mondo infedele, domando umilmente all'E. V. di essere ammesso al Santo Noviziato». Il 28.8.1932 emise la Prima Professione. Frequentò quindi due anni di Liceo nel Seminario di Parma. Nel 1934-35 fu prefetto a Vicenza e dal 1935 al 1939 fece i quattro anni di teologia nel Seminario di Parma. Il 18.5.1939 fu ordinato presbitero.
Dopo l'ordinazione, dal 1939 al 1949, fu impegnato nell'insegnamento e nel ministero in diverse comunità d'Italia: Vicenza, Grumone, Parma, Poggio San Marcello, Capriglio, Castel Sidoli, Parma e Desio.
Gli piaceva insegnare, ma anche desiderava andare in missione. Nel 1948 comunicando ai Superiori la disponibilità per un eventuale impegno in Spagna, puntualizzava: «In linea di massima sono lieto di prestarmi ad una temporale obbedienza in terra di Spagna; sempre che la cosa non importi una rinuncia a quella mia presenza in terra di missione, cui l'ideale missionario e le Costituzioni della Nostra Società vennero educandomi fin dalla prima giovinezza».
Nel 1949 fu destinato alla nuova missione della Sierra Leone. Agli inizi del 1950 giunse in Scozia, in Lesley Road, Glasgow. Vi rimase per due anni, studente di lingua, e impegnato nel ministero.
Nel dicembre 1951 raggiunse la Sierra Leone e, un mese dopo, scriveva al P. Generale: «Fin da ora ringrazio il Signore della grazia tanto grande che Egli mi ha fatto chiamandomi alla vocazione di sacerdote missionario e mandandomi in Africa …». La presenza in Sierra Leone di P. Zanon si protrasse fino al 1972. Fu parroco a Lunsar, Lungi, Makeni, Port Loko, Lungi e Magburaka; dal 1956 al 1959 fu Superiore Religioso. «Diresse molte scuole, amato dai maestri, rispettato dai colleghi e sempre pronto ad aiutare: sempre disponibile, sempre obbediente e sempre in pace con se stesso e con gli altri, sia musulmani che cristiani» (SX Gran Bretagna).
Nel 1972 fu destinato all'insegnamento e al ministero a Coatbridge (GB). Nella circostanza appuntò in un formulario inviato alla DG: «Mi vogliono a Glasgow. Sia ben chiaro che mi dispiace immensamente lasciare la Missione ma anche che faccio volentieri la Volontà del Buon Dio». Insegnò latino e italiano agli aspiranti saveriani del St. Francis Xavier College di Coatbridge.
Nel 1985 il College fu chiuso e il P. Zanon si dedicò totalmente al ministero, prestandosi per la celebrazione dell'Eucaristia e del sacramento del perdono. Nelle parrocchie di St. Margaret di Airdrie e di St. Patrick di Coatbridge ricordano ancora le interminabili ore di confessionale del P. Paolino e le lunghe file di penitenti.
Nel 2000 cominciarono a manifestarsi problemi di salute. Fu sollevato da ogni servizio pastorale e, necessitando di una assistenza continua, fu ospitato al St. Andrew’s Hospice. Anche qui continuò a vivere la missione con la celebrazione della messa quotidiana, la preghiera prolungata e interessandosi alla vita della Sierra Leone, della famiglia Saveriana e, particolarmente, dei suoi ex-studenti.
Nel 1999, in occasione del 60° di ordinazione, scriveva al P. Generale: «Il Signore mi dà la grazia di un tempo più lungo per migliorare. Chiedo l'aiuto della vostra preghiera per poter essere … fedele all'annuncio del Vangelo e alla Vita Religiosa secondo lo spirito del Beato Guido M. Conforti, nostro Fondatore».
P. Paolino è stato un servo fedele: il Signore lo accolga nel suo Paradiso.

Fr. Paolino Zanon died on July 12 2010, at the St. Andrew’s Hospice, Coatbridge, Scotland, where he had been living for several years.
Born in Vigonza (Padova, Italy), on June 22, 1914, he was 96 years old.
He joined the Congregation at Vicenza in 1926. The Founder was still alive and Fr. Zanon «always remembered with pride how he had known him prayed with him, and followed his missionary ideal».
He completed the formation program of those times: the first four years of high school at Vicenza (1926-30); the fifth year of high school at Grumone (1930-31); Novitiate in Parma (1931-32), to which he was admitted by the Founder himself, to whom he had applied on June 4 1931: «after completing the high school course in the minor seminaries of Vicenza and Cremona, desiring my sanctification and hoping to do good to the souls of the pagan world, I humbly ask you to admit me to the Novitiate». He made his First Profession on Aug. 28 1932. He then attended two years of Liceo in the seminary of Parma. In 1934-35 he was prefect at Vicenza and, from 1935 until 1939, he completed the four years of theology in the seminary of Parma. He was ordained priest on May 18 1939.
After his ordination, from 1939 until 1949, he worked in teaching and the pastoral ministry in various Italian communities: Vicenza, Grumone, Parma, Poggio San Marcello, Capriglio, Castel Sidoli, Parma and Desio.
He liked to teach, but he also wanted to go to the missions. In 1948 he informed the Superiors of his availability for an appointment to Spain: «by and large, I would be happy to do a temporary period of service in Spain, provided that this does not entail giving up on an assignment to the missions, something for which I have been formed since my youth by the missionary ideal and the Constitutions of our Society».
In 1949 he was assigned to the new mission of Sierra Leone. At the beginning of 1950 he arrived in Scotland, where he was based in Lesley Road, Glasgow. He remained there for two years, learning the language and doing ministry.
He arrived in Sierra Leone in December 1951 and, a month later, he wrote to the Superior General: «I want to thank the Lord for the great grace he has bestowed upon me by calling me to the vocation of the missionary priest and by sending me to Africa…». Fr. Zanon worked in Sierra Leone until 1972. He served as parish priest at Lunsar, Lungi, Makeni, Port Loko, Lungi and Magburaka; from 1956 until 1959 he was the Religious Superior. «He directed many schools, he was loved by the teachers and respected by his colleagues; he was always ready to help; always available, always obedient and always at peace with himself and with others, both Muslims and Christians».
In 1972 he was assigned to teaching and ministry at Coatbridge (GB). He informed the General Direction: «They want me in Glasgow. I want to say clearly that I am very sorry to leave the mission, but also that I readily do God’s will». He taught Latin and Italian to the Xaverian seminarians of the St. Francis Xavier College, Coatbridge.
The college closed in 1985 and Fr. Zanon dedicated himself entirely to the ministry, celebrating the Eucharist and hearing confessions. In the parishes of St. Margaret, Airdrie, and St. Patrick, Coatbridge, people still remember his endless hours in the confessional and the long lines of penitents.
In 2000, he began to have health problems. He was freed from all pastoral work and, in need of constant care, he was received into St. Andrew’s Hospice. He continued to live the mission through the daily celebration of the Eucharist, prolonged prayer and showing an interest in the life of Sierra Leone, the Xaverian family and, especially, of his former students.
In 1999, on his 60th anniversary of ordination, he wrote to the Superior General: «The Lord has granted me the grace of living longer in order to grow even more. I ask you to support me with your prayers that I might… be faithful to the proclamation of the Gospel and the Religious Life, according to the spirit of our Founder, Blessed Guido Maria Conforti».
