Il capo delle forze armate, il generale Waker-Uz-Zaman, ha annunciato la formazione di un governo ad interim.

Nelle ultime ore, intanto, il bilancio delle vittime degli scontri tra forze dell’ordine e manifestanti nell’ultimo mese era salito a 300, di cui 94 decedute domenica 4 agosto 2024. L’esercito aveva imposto un coprifuoco a tempo indeterminato ed era stata interrotta la connessione internet nel tentativo di arginare i disordini. Le dimostrazioni sono iniziate nelle scorse settimane come manifestazioni studentesche contro il sistema delle quote riservate negli impieghi pubblici: sono poi scoppiati scontri con polizia e attivisti pro-governativi, degenerati in violenze che hanno scosso l’intero Paese.

Under pressure from student and anti-government protests that have been going on for weeks in the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and already left Bangladesh. The head of the army, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, has announced the formation of a transitional government.

Meanwhile, the death toll from clashes between security forces and protesters over the past month in the last hours has risen to 300, including 94 who died on Sunday, August 4^th, 2024. The army has imposed an indefinite curfew and internet connection has been cut off in an attempt to stem the unrest. Demonstrations began in recent weeks as student protested against the quota system reserving jobs in the civil service: clashes then broke out with police and pro-government activists, escalating into violence that shook the entire country.
