La coincidenza della Giornata di Preghiera per la Chiesa in Cina e il Convegno tenutosi all’ Università Urbaniana a 100 anni dal Primo Sinodo della Chiesa Cinese tenutosi a Shanghai (al quale partecipò come Segretario anche il nostro p. Alfredo Popoli sx, missionario in Cina e morto a Parma nel 1936) offre qualche occasione per riflettere sull’attuale situazione e su vari scenari che si possono aprire. Si veda, tra tanti, il sito:

La storia è di assoluta importanza nella cultura cinese, e forse occorre fare memoria anche della storia della Chiesa, non meno breve. Occorre ricordare San Gregorio VII, occorre ricordare San Tommaso Moro, insieme al Cardinale San Giovanni Fisher, martiri per la verità della Chiesa Cattolica.

Davvero, la cattolicità sola custodisce la verità di Gesù Dio e Salvatore. Quando le Chiese diventano nazionali, le appartenenze a tradizioni, razze, progetti politici, prendono il sopravvento e si ergono a divinità più importanti dell’Unico Nome nel quale c’è la salvezza, quella vera, quella eterna. Nazioni e culture, inni e bandiere riescono al massimo ad avvolgere le bare, non a dare la vita eterna.

Con questa coscienza guardiamo a quanto avviene, alle posizioni che vengono prese nei confronti della persecuzione che si sta abbattendo sulla Chiesa Cattolica in Cina.

La giornata di preghiera voluta da Papa Benedetto XVI a questo punto riceve uno scopo aggiunto: che la Chiesa in tutto il mondo abbia il coraggio di dare agli eventi e alle loro cause il nome che meritano, e testimoni la verità del suo essere, non tanto con inutili proteste sui media, ma con scelte e indirizzi che la difendano e promuovano la sua crescita.

C’è già stato un Thomas Wolsey, che alla fine disse: “Avessi io servito Iddio con tanta cura con quanta m'adoprai pel mio re [Enrico VIII], certo che non m’avrebbe da sé respinto nella mia vecchiaia; ma questa è la ricompensa che mi merito per essermi in tal guisa affaticato e studiato in servizio del principe e non del cielo.”

The coincidence of the Day of Prayer for the Church in China and the Conference held at the Urbaniana University 100 years after the First Synod of the Chinese Church held in Shanghai (in which Fr. History is of absolute importance in Chinese culture, and perhaps we should also remember the history of the Church, which is not shorter.

It is necessary to remember Saint Gregory VII, it is necessary to remember Saint Thomas More, together with Cardinal Saint John Fisher, martyrs for the truth of the Catholic Church.

Truly, catholicity alone preserves the true faith in Jesus as God and Savior. When the Churches become national, the affiliations to traditions, races, political projects take over and become more important divinities than the One Name in which there is salvation, the true one, the eternal one. Nations and cultures, hymns and flags succeed at most in wrapping coffins, not in giving eternal life.

With this awareness, we look at what is happening, at the positions that are taken towards the persecution that is affecting the Catholic Church in China.

The day of prayer desired by Pope Benedict XVI at this point receives an added purpose: that the Church throughout the world be courage enough to give events and their causes the name they deserve. That the whole Church bear witness to the truth of her being, not so much with useless protests in the media, but with choices and directions that defend it and promote its growth.

There was already a Thomas Wolsey, who at the end said “Had I served God with as much care as I did for my king [Henry VIII], he certainly would not of himself have rejected me in my old age; but this is the reward I deserve for having worked and studied in this way in the service of the prince and not of heaven."
