Il 1° novembre 2022 si è svolto il II Incontro Sinodale  tra gli studenti universitari africani e papa Francesco:  Building bridges across Africa.

 Nel dialogo con gli studenti universitari africani del 1° novembre 2022, papa Francesco ha esordito dicendo: “State attenti quando qualcuno vi dice all’orecchio che voi siete la novità, no, voi siete il passo ‘avanti’.” Essere cristiani-discepoli significa andare avanti senza paura, significa costruire ponti andando ‘avanti’. “È necessario essere uniti e organizzati, elaborando una dottrina politica propria a partire dalle radici storiche dei vostri popoli,” poiché, egli sostiene, “l’organizzazione vince il tempo”.

Considerando i giovani come i frutti di un albero con proprie radici, il papa ha ribadito: “fatevi carico della storia dei vostri popoli”, “fatevi carico di questa eredità che è la vostra forza”, “l’Africa non esiste per essere sfruttata. L’Africa non esiste per essere l’immagine di una sottocultura”.

Papa Francesco, inoltre, punta il dito contro “una storia di colonizzazione molto selvaggia”. Osserva che alcune nazioni “restano in rapporto di dipendenza con il colonizzatore a causa delle ricchezze del sottosuolo”, mentre “l’indipendenza o è totale o non è”.

In difesa di tutta la vita, e di fronte all’evidenza di morte per l’Africa che il Mediterraneo rappresenta come cimitero più grande d’Europa, Papa Francesco propone loro la politica migliore: l’organizzazione: “Organizzatevi, non giocate da soli, come isole, perché perderete. Organizzati soffrirete, sarete perseguitati, ma trionferete. Andate avanti. Che quello che rischiate produca frutti per la patria, per la gioventù dell’Africa. Andate avanti, vi accompagno in questo, ma aiutate gli altri a organizzarsi e organizzatevi”.

Di fronte alla preoccupazione per l’aumento degli attacchi fondamentalisti, il Papa afferma: “Questo banditismo terroristico, quando cresce, è un suicidio sociale”. Proprio per questo aggiunge che “di fronte a ciò i giovani non possono restare passivi”. Precisa che l’alternativa sociale è “resistenza, organizzazione e dottrina politica”, ma aggiunge anche: “l’azione politica dei giovani non può essere un’azione qualsiasi. Deve essere dottrina politica. Formatevi nella dottrina politica reale, concreta. Fare politica è una forma alta della carità perché va verso il bene comune”. “Preparatevi seriamente, con una saggia dottrina politica”. Ciò significa che “ogni popolo non può limitarsi a copiare le risorse di un altro popolo. Deve cercare il suo proprio cammino di superamento e fare una dottrina politica che nasca dal popolo stesso, non imposta, non che viene qualcuno a dirgli che cosa deve fare, che sia di destra o di sinistra. Dovete essere voi a segnare il vostro cammino” con “prudenza e con astuzia; anche perché Dio vi ama e vi darà la forza per andare avanti”.

On November 1^st, 2022, Pope Francis started his dialogue with African university students by saying: “Beware of those who whisper in your ears that you are the novelty! No, you are the step ‘forward’.” To be Christian-disciples means to move on without fears; it means building bridges by going ‘ahead’. “It is necessary to be united and organised, and elaborate one’s own political doctrine starting from the roots of your peoples,” because, the pope affirmed, “organisation wins over time.”

For the pope, the youth are the fruits of a tree that has its own roots. This is why he insisted: “You must take responsibility for the history of your peoples… you must take responsibility for this legacy, which is also your power. … Africa is not meant to be exploited. Africa is not meant to be the image of a subculture.”

Moreover, pope Francis pointed the fingers at “a history of very savage colonisations.” He noticed that some nations “remain dependent on their coloniser because of the richness of the soil,” whereas “independence is either complete or never achieved.”

In order to defend life, and in consideration of the fact that the Mediterranean See represents the greatest cemetery of Europe where mostly Africans are buried, pope Francis invites the students to adopt a better political action: “Get organised! Do not play alone, like islands, lest you will lose. Truly, when you will be organised, you will suffer, you will be persecuted, but in the end you will triumph. Keep going on. May all the risks you take produce fruits for your motherland, for the young people of Africa. Keep going on. I will accompany you, but help others to get organised and get organised yourself.”

In the face of worries for the growing number of fundamentalist attacks, the pope affirmed: “When it grows, this terroristic banditry is a form of social suicide.” This is why he added: “when confronted with it, young people cannot remain passive.” He then clarified that the social alternative is “resistance, organisation and political doctrine,” but also added: “young people’s political action cannot be any kind of action whatsoever. It must be political doctrine. Train yourselves in real and concrete political doctrine. To engage in politics is a high form of charity for it is aimed at the common good. … Get seriously prepared with a wise political doctrine.” This means that “every people cannot merely copy the resources of another people. On the contrary, it must search for its own path of liberation and carry out a political doctrine which is derived from its own people and is not imposed. Nobody else, no matter whether he is from the right or from the left, should come to tell a people what to do. You must be the ones who mark your journey” with “prudence and ingenuity; consider also that God loves you and will give you the strength to move ahead.”
