Mercoledì 11 gennaio 2023, papa Francesco ha dato inizio ad un nuovo ciclo di catechesi, dedicato al tema: lapassione per l’evangelizzazione, cioè lo zelo apostolico. Si tratta di una dimensione vitale per la Chiesa: la comunità dei discepoli di Gesù nasce infatti apostolica, nasce missionaria. Lo Spirito Santo la plasma in uscita — la Chiesa in uscita, che esce —, perché non sia ripiegata su sé stessa, ma estroversa, testimone contagiosa di Gesù la fede si contagia, pure —, protesa a irradiare la sua luce fino agli estremi confini della terra. Può succedere, però, che l’ardore apostolico, il desiderio di raggiungere gli altri con il buon annuncio del Vangelo, diminuisca, divenga tiepido. Ma quando la vita cristiana perde di vista l’orizzonte dell’evangelizzazione, l’orizzonte dell’annuncio, si ammala: si atrofizza. Senza zelo apostolico, la fede appassisce. La missione è invece l’ossigeno della vita cristiana: la tonifica e la purifica.
NEW CYCLE OF MEDITATIONS DEDICATED TO THE “PASSION FOR EVANGELISATION”: MISSION AS OXYGEN
On Wednesday, January 11th, 2023, pope Francis began a new cycle of catecheses on the theme “passion for evangelisation”, that is, “apostolic zeal.” It is a vital dimension for the Church: the community of Jesus’ disciples was in fact born apostolic, born missionary. The Holy Spirit moulds her outwardly — a Church which goes forth, which goes out — so that she is not closed in on herself but outgoing, a contagious witness of Jesus — faith is also contagious — reaching out to radiate his light to the ends of the earth. It can happen, however, that the apostolic ardour, the desire to reach others with the good news of the Gospel, may diminish, become tepid. But when Christian life loses sight of the horizon of evangelization, the horizon of proclamation, it grows sick: it closes in on itself, it becomes self-referential, it becomes atrophied. Without apostolic zeal, faith withers. Mission, on the other hand, is the oxygen of Christian life: it invigorates and purifies it.
