FIFTY YEARS OF E.M.I. (ITALIAN MISSIONARY PUBLISHING HOUSE)

With the renowned expression “giving voice to the voiceless”, typical of a Church that reaches out to the peripheries, our confrere Fr. Rosario Giannattasio, president of Editrice Missionaria Italiana (EMI), describes 50 years of activity of this publishing house:  “It was born in 1973 and, from the start, it adopted the trademark which had identified the common editorial projects of PIME, Consolata, Xaverian and Comboni. Today, it is made up by twelve missionary congregations.

The birth of EMI occurred at a time when the missionary world was undergoing a transformation. We lived in the enthusiastic mood of the conciliar season, in the wake of Populorum progressio. “In recent years,” explains Fr. Rosario Giannattasio, “the realisation of exhibitions, shows and training workshops were added [to the publishing activities].

On May 11th, 2023, Fr. Rosario, along with the manager of EMI, introduced a new editorial project to Pope Francis, a project that will centre on the alliance between EMI and Il Portico Publishing House, new owner of both Edizioni Dehoniane di Bologna (EDB) and Marietti. “Moreover, the full custody of the cultural and editorial identity of our missionary publishing house will be entrusted to the Conference of Italian Missionary Institutes (CIMI) who will remain an integral part of the editorial project.” (from L’Osservatore Romano, June 15th, 2023)
