"P. Berto" - così lo si chiamava in Casa Madre - nacque il 17.X.1902 a Neviano de-gli Arduini (PR) da Pietro ed Onesta Monica.
A 21 anni entrava nell'Istituto Saveriano a Parma, accoltovi dal Fondatore. Emessa la Professione dei Voti Religiosi e completati gli studi teologici, fu ordinato Sacerdote il 7.IV.1928 nella Cattedrale di Parma per le mani di Mons. Conforti, assieme ai Confratelli PP. Ferrari, Poli, Frattin, Illuminati, Frassinetti Mario, Galvan, Frassinetti Enrico e Cocconcelli.
Nell'aprile 1928 fu destinato come Insegnante alla Scuola Apostolica di Poggio S. Marcello, rimanendovi fino al settembre 1930, quando lo stesso Fondatore lo nominò Direttore Spirituale in Casa Madre.
Morì a Parma il 25.I.1952.
Nella "Lettera Rosa" del 29.I.1952, il Superiore Generale, P. Giovanni Gazza così informava i Confratelli sulla morte del P. Francesco:
"... il 25 c.m. il nostro caro P. Bertogalli ha chiuso la sua giornata terrena riempita di sofferenze, di sacrifici, di penitenze e di preghiere e si è addormentato santamente nel Signore. Egli ci lascia un ricordo pratico e vissuto: per essere missionari, cioè salvatori di anime, non è necessario raggiungere sempre le mete delle nostre vedute umane ed attuare i piani della nostra volontà; ma è necessario prima di ogni altra cosa, la santificazione della propria vita, il sacrificio di sé stessi e l'abbandono pieno e totale alla volontà di Dio..."
Sulla pubblicazione Missionari Saveriani, nel n. 3 del 1952, apparve un articolo a firma di Pasquale De Martino con il titolo "Padre Bertogalli è morto"; in esso tra l'altro è detto:
“… Da vent'anni eravamo abituati a vederlo in questa Casa, quasi sempre solo, andare col corpo piegato in avanti e la testa a destra ... con il Breviario e la Corona nelle mani unite al petto; soprattutto lo vedevamo in chiesa: molte volte bisognava mandarlo via perché vi si fermava ore ed ore. Bisognava stare attenti alla sera ed anche di notte... di non dimenticarlo in Chiesa: perché il suo fisico aveva bisogno di riposo e lui non ci badava. Era cascante di debolezza per la mortificazione, per la volontà di sacrificarsi… lui diceva che stava sempre bene.
Abbiamo perduto il nostro adoratore. Era ammalato, ma luì non lo diceva mai e non si è lamentato. Se c'erano rimostranze da parte sua era perché l'ubbidienza gli imponeva sacrifici troppo gravi, al suo modo di vedere. Nutrirsi meglio? Era sempre troppo... Riposare? Non era mai stanco ... Avere dei riguardi per lui? Non ne valeva la pena... Era sempre pronto a darsi, ad aiutare, al ministero sacerdotale, a predicare, a confessare… A confessare specialmente: era il confessore dei missionari e degli esterni, alcuni dei quali venivano da lontano proprio per lui. Non lo vediamo più tra noi eppure. Lo sentiamo vicino.
La malattia che lo condusse alla morte ci diede la prova evidente che la sua vita era stata tutta spesa per la vittoria dello spirito sul corpo, vissuta qui tra noi, per i nostri ideali..."

Fr. Francesco Bertogalli died at the Mother House in Parma, following a long sickness, on Jan. 25 1952. He was 49 years old, born on Oct. 17 1902 at Neviano degli Arduini (Parma).
“Fr. Berto” – as he was nicknamed at Parma – entered the Xaverians when he was 21 years old, on Oct. 17 1923, welcomed by our Founder. After Novitiate, he professed religious missionary vows on Nov. 1 1924, and at the end of his theology studies, he was ordained priest on Apr. 7 1928 at the Cathedral of Parma. Bishop Conforti ordained him, together with Frs. Ferrari, Poli, Frattin, Illuminati, Frassinetti Mario and Enrico, Galvan, and Cocconcelli.
In April 1928 Fr. Bertogalli was assigned as teacher at the Xaverian school of Poggio S. Marcello, for a couple of years. Our Founder called him back to Parma in Sept. 1930, as Spiritual Director of the Mother House.
In the “Pink Letter” of Jan. 29 1952, the Superior General Fr. Giovanni Gazza wrote on the death of Fr. Francesco: “Fr. Bertogalli has closed his earthly journey with us on Jan. 25, a journey rich of pains, sacrifices, and prayers. He died a Holy death in the Lord.
He leaves behind his practical and lived experience: to be missionaries, and thus saviors of souls, it is not necessary to always reach our human goals, and realize the plans of our will. Instead it is most important the sanctification of our life, the self-sacrifice, and the complete and total abandonment to the will of God…”
Here are some excerpts from an article of Fr. Pasquale De Martino, in the monthly “Missionari Saveriani” of March 1952: “… For the past 20 years we have come to know Fr. Bertogalli in the Mother House, always alone, with his hunchbacked body and his face leaning to its right,… with the Breviary and the Rosary beads, and hands close to his chest. We saw him often in the chapel, so much that many times we had to send him out, for he used to spend longs hours there. We had to pay attention especially in the evening and at night, not to leave him behind in the church. His body needed rest, but he would care less.
He was weak because of his sacrifices in life, even though he always said he was well. We lost our adorer! He was sick, but he would not complain. To nourish himself? It was too much… To rest? He was never tired… To take care of his needs? It was useless…
He was ever ready to give of himself, to help, to share in the priestly ministry, to preach, to confess… Ah, confessions! He was the confessor of the Missionaries and of so many other people, who wanted him as their confessor. He is not with us, but we feel his presence. The grave sickness that brought him to his death was the most evident proof that the life of Fr. Bertogalli was given for the victory of the spirit over the body, lived among us, for eternal goals…”
