P. Adolfo Romano Codini

La mattina del 23.7.2007, nella Casa Regionale di Madrid, è stato trovato morto P. Adolfo Romano Codini. Era arrivato dal Brasile Sud due giorni prima, diretto a Roma dove era atteso nella tarda mattinata dello stesso 23 luglio. Durante il volo S. Paulo-Madrid si era sentito male e, appena sceso dall’aereo, era stato sottoposto agli opportuni controlli medici.
Aveva 69 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Roma il 7.5.1938.
P. Adolfo fu una vocazione adulta. Entrò nel Pontificio Collegio Leoniano di Anagni, il Seminario Regionale del Lazio, nel 1959, all’età di 21 anni. Al termine della propedeutica, passò tra i Saveriani a Nizza Monferrato. Volle fare due anni di noviziato: «ha capito, commentava il P. Maestro, che gli occorre una soda vita interiore» (4.6.64). Emise la Prima Professione il 3.10.65; frequentò quindi la Teologia a Parma dove il 13.10.68 fu ordinato presbitero. In quell’occasione scrisse: «Desidero che i Rev.di Superiori mi usino per la maggior gloria di Dio e il maggior bene della Chiesa e della Congregazione: dove, quando e come meglio credono. Desidererei esercitare il mio ministero sacerdotale nelle parrocchie del Brasile sud» (11.10.68).
I Superiori assecondarono il suo desiderio e, alla conclusione degli studi teologici, lo destinarono al Brasile sud. Alla fine di ottobre 1969 il P. Adolfo era a Sào Paulo per lo studio del portoghese e nel gennaio del 1970 iniziava il suo apostolato. Lavorò principalmente nella pastorale (vice parroco a Vista Alegre, Itapejara d’Oeste, Piraju), ma anche nell’insegnamento e nella promozione sociale dei minori.
Al compimento del quinto anno di missione rientrò in Italia e frequentò un corso di spiritualità al Teresianum di Roma. Ritornato in Brasile, fu parroco a Panema e poi a Lupianopolis (75-79). Quindi si rese disponibile per l’animazione missionaria a Sào Paulo-Vila Mariana (79-82) e a Curitiba (82-85), comunità nelle quali fu anche incaricato, rispettivamente, dell’economia e della conduzione dell’Azienda Articoli religiosi.
Nel 1985 fu destinato all’Italia, per l’avvicendamento. Fu economo e animatore missionario a Reggio Calabria-Gallico (85-88) e a Mazara del Vallo (88-89).
Nel settembre del 1989 chiese un permesso di assenza, che si protrasse fino al 1995, per essere vicino alla mamma anziana e ammalata. In quegli anni prestò il suo servizio pastorale nella piccola parrocchia di Castel di Sasso - Cerveteri (Roma), soprattutto nella Casa di preghiera Santa Croce al Sasso «con gruppi che si susseguono; molto impegnativa la direzione spirituale...» (ottobre ‘92).
Nel 1995 il P. Adolfo tornò in Brasile sud. Gli fu affidata la parrocchia di Melo Viana. Era «contento per il molto lavoro: bellissima la comunità religiosa; anche se il futuro è incerto... molto abbandono e fiducia nel Signore» (6.6.97).
Di fatto stava vivendo un’ulteriore fase di discernimento nella ricerca di un’armonia più profonda tra attività apostolica e vita spirituale. Nel 1998 chiese e ottenne dai Superiori di vivere per due anni nella trappa di Claraval, nel sud di Minas Gerais. Nel 2000 riprese il suo posto nella comunità saveriana del Brasile sud. Ricoprì l’incarico di Rettore ed economo nella casa regionale di Sào Paulo-Vila Mariana (00-04) e poi di parroco a Londrina-Conjuntos (04-07)... «vedo che sto riuscendo a fare bene quello che devo fare rimanendo in comunione permanente con lo Spirito Santo, adorandolo nel più profondo di me: è meraviglioso» (12.11.00).
P. Adolfo era persuaso «[di aver] lavorato troppo con le braccia: dovevo farlo di più con la testa e anche, specialmente, con le ginocchia» (17.5.82). Si adoperò assiduamente perché la contemplazione diventasse “calore, esperienza di vita, vita apostolica, missionaria”: “un’armonia di unità”.

Fr. Adolfo Romano Codini was found dead in the morning of July 23 2007, in the Regional House of Madrid (Spain). He had arrived from South Brazil two days before and was due to travel to Rome in the morning of July 23. He had felt unwell during the flight from Sao Paulo to Madrid and, as soon as he got off the plane, he was taken for a medical examination.
Born in Rome on May 7 1938, Fr. Codini was 69 years old.
Fr. Adolfo was an adult vocation. In 1959, at the age of 21, he entered the Pontificio Collegio Leoniano of Anagni, the Regional Seminary of the Lazio Region. At the end of the propaedeutic stage he joined the Xaverians in Nizza Monferrato. He wanted to do two years of Novitiate: “He is aware that he needs a solid interior life” (comment of the Novice Master, June 4 1964). He made his First Profession on Oct. 3 1965, moved to Parma for Theology and was ordained priest there on Oct. 13 1968. On that occasion he said: “My desire is that my Superiors use me, where, when and how they believe best, for the greater glory of God, the greater good of the Church and the Congregation. I wish to exercise my priestly ministry in the parishes of South Brazil.” (Oct. 11 1968).
The Superiors granted his request and he was assigned to South Brazil upon conclusion of his theology studies. At the end of October 1969, Fr. Adolfo was in Sao Paulo for the study of Portuguese and in January 1970 he began his apostolate. He worked mainly in the pastoral ministry (assistant priest in Vista Alegre, Itapejara, Pirajù), and was also active in teaching and the social promotion of minors.
He returned to Italy after five years in the missions, and attended a spirituality course at the Teresianum University in Rome. When he returned to Brazil, he worked as parish priest in Panema and then in Lupianopolis (1975-79). He then made himself available for missionary animation at Sao Paulo – Vila Mariana (1979-82) and Curitiba (1982-85), communities in which he was also in charge, respectively, of finances and the direction of the Religious Artifacts Company.
He was assigned to Italy on rotation in 1985 and was treasurer and missionary animator at Reggio Calabria – Gallico (1985-88) and Mazara del Vallo (1988-89).
In september 1989 he asked for a leave of absence, which lasted until 1995, in order to assist his elderly and sick mother. During those years, he served in the small parish of Castel di Sasso – Cerveteri (Rome), especially in the House of Prayer “Santa Croce al Sasso” “with a number of groups: the spiritual direction work is very demanding…” (October 1992).
Fr. Adolfo returned to South Brazil in 1995, where he was entrusted with the parish of Melo Viana. He was “happy for the great deal of work: a wonderful religious community; though the future is uncertain… great abandonment and trust in the Lord” (June 6 1997).
He was living a further phase of discernment in the search for a more profound harmony between apostolic activity and the spiritual life. In 1998 he asked for, and obtained, the Superior’s permission to live for two years in the Trappist monastery of Claraval, south of Minas Gerais. He returned to the Xaverian community of South Brazil in 2000. He worked as Rector and treasurer of the Regional House in Sao Paulo-Vila Mariana (2000-04) and was then parish priest at Londrina-Conjuntos (2000-07). “I am succeeding in what I do thanks to my permanent communion with the Holy Spirit, adoring him in the most profound depths of my heart: it is wonderful” (Nov. 12, 2000).
Fr. Adolfo was convinced that he had done too much manual work: “I should have worked more with my head and, above all, on my knees” (May 17 1982). He always did his utmost to ensure that contemplation was “warmth, experience of life, apostolic and missionary life… a harmonious unity.”
