P. Giuseppe Crippa

Alle 02,45 del 26 ottobre 2009, al Policlinico Centrale di Bujumbura, dove era stato ricoverato il 19 ottobre da Luvungi (Congo) per ictus cerebrale, è morto il P. Giuseppe Crippa.
Aveva 75 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Bergamo l'1.10.1934.
P. Crippa è la tipica vocazione fiorita e cresciuta in quei generosi terreni che erano le famiglie e le parrocchie della Diocesi di Bergamo nel primo dopoguerra. Difatti è il suo parroco che firma la sua presentazione, quando entrò all'Istituto a Grumone nell'ottobre 1945: «È un ragazzo da me ben conosciuto e seguito. È buono e di buona volontà. Ha un carattere, per la sua età, risoluto e volitivo. Credo che ben guidato potrà fare buona riuscita» (Don Teodoro Dolci, 29.7.46) .
Gli inizi risultarono movimentati e laboriosi poi il cammino scolastico e formativo si svolse con normale regolarità: Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli (1951-52) e Prima Professione il 12.9.52; Liceo a Desio; Prefettato a Parma; Teologia a Piacenza (I e II) e a Parma (III e IV) dove fu ordinato presbitero il 26.10.1959. Questo il ritratto di P. Crippa, delineato nella presentazione agli ordini maggiori: «Più portato all'attività pratica e meccanica che alla speculazione. Pietà buona. Obbediente e premuroso. Discute con vivacità sostenendo i suoi punti di vista. Caritatevole e stimato dai confratelli. Sincero e leale».
Nella festa di S. Lucia del 1959 (il giorno dei regali in diverse località del Nord Italia) scrisse un biglietto al P. Generale, chiedendo «dalle mani generose di S. Lucia il dono tanto desiderato della missione». Il regalo non arrivò e alla conclusione degli studi teologici fu destinato all'Italia dove ebbe l'incarico di economo della casa di Alzano. Una comunità allora «con 85 apostolini. "Erano ancora tempi di fatiche e di debiti» (22.2.96).
Nel 1965 fu destinato al Congo dove giunse nel 1966, dopo un anno di studio della lingua francese a Bruxelles.
Dal 1966 al 1976 operò nella pastorale parrocchiale e nella amministrazione: fu viceparroco ed economo a Kamituga (66-68), economo e procuratore della diocesi di Uvira (68-71), viceparroco a Kiringye – Centro Medico Sociale (72-75).
Dal 1976 al 1996 lavorò a Luvungi, viceparroco e incaricato della grande officina che serviva diverse diocesi e che fu impietosamente distrutta durante la guerra iniziata nel 1996. «Più di una volta l'ho sentito gridare per come usavamo le macchine. Una sua frase è sicuramente scritta nella storia dei Saveriani in Congo: “ Battezzate, battezzate e l’acqua non vi manca… salite in macchina e fate i vostri safari senza accorgervi che manca l’acqua nel radiatore … Si parla tanto di povertà, sì, di povertà e non si sa come si tiene una macchina!» (P. «Ricordo, scrive il P. Rino Benzoni (26.10.09), il 'sano' orgoglio con cui presentava il suo lavoro … Mi piace ricordare in questo momento che la missione ha bisogno di tante presenze e servizi, il più delle volte umili, ma anche il fatto che la sua attività principale non lo ha mai distolto dalla cura pastorale di una comunità cristiana».
Dal 1997 al 2004 fu a Bukavu con l'ufficio di Economo Regionale. «Erano gli anni della guerra; i contatti erano difficili; il Congo frequentemente isolato dal resto del mondo. Tutt'altro che facile, procurare il necessario per vivere. Non c'è comunità religiosa, non c'è realtà delle Diocesi di Bukavu, Uvira, Kasongo e di altre Diocesi, che non abbia ricevuto concreto aiuto dal P. Crippa che restava al tavolo di lavoro anche fino a mezzanotte per procurare il necessario» (P. G. Brentegani, 30.10.09).
Nel 2004 ritornò a lavorare nella Diocesi di Uvira, a Kavimvira. Quattro anni dopo, con il generoso aiuto dei suoi familiari, pose mano alla realizzazione di un suo sogno, la costruzione di un ospedale a Kamanyola.
Ma non ha potuto vederlo terminato. «Il Signore ha voluto chiamarlo a sé – ha commentato il P. Rino Benzoni – e dargli il premio di una lunga missione svolta con totale dedizione e mettendo a disposizione dei confratelli e della chiesa locale i doni che aveva ricevuto».

Fr. Giuseppe Crippa died on Oct. 26 2009, in the General Hospital of Bujumbura (Burundi). He had been taken to the hospital from Luvungi (D. R. Congo) on Oct. 19, after suffering a stroke.
Born in Bergamo on Oct. 1, 1934, he was 75 years old.
Fr. Crippa was atypical vocation that blossomed and grew in the generous environment of the families and parishes of Bergamo in the period after the Second World War. In the report that presented him to the Xaverians Institute, which he joined in Grumone in Oct. 1945, his parish priest wrote: «I know him very well and have followed his growth. He is a good young man and is endowed with a good will. For a boy of his age, he has a resolute and strong character. If he is well guided, I believe he will be very successful» (Fr. Teodoro Dolci on July 29 1946).
The beginnings were eventful and arduous; thereafter his academic and formation program went smoothly: Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (1951-52) and First Profession on Sept. 12 1952; Liceo at Desio; Prefect at Parma; Theology at Piacenza (first two years) and at Parma (last two years) where he was ordained priest on Oct. 26 1959. His presentation to Major Orders said of him: «He is more inclined to practical and mechanical activities than to speculation. Good piety. Obedient and thoughtful. He argues in lively manner, defending his own point of view. He is kind and respected by the confreres. He is sincere and loyal».
On the feast of St. Lucy in 1959 (which is a gift-giving day in many areas of northern Italy) he wrote to the Superior General, asking for «the much-desired gift of an assignment to the missions through the intercession of St. Lucy». This gift did not arrive and, upon conclusion of his theological studies, he was assigned to Italy as treasurer of the community of Alzano Lombardo, which was then home to «85 aspirants in times of difficulty and debts» (Letter of Feb. 22, 1996).
He was assigned to Congo in 1965 and he arrived there in 1966, after a year studying French in Brussels. From 1966 until 1976 he worked in parish pastoral ministry and administration: he served as assistant priest and treasurer in Kamituga (1966-68), treasurer and procurator of the Uvira diocese (1968-71), assistant priest in Kiringye – in the Social Medical Center (1972-75).
From 1976 until 1996 he worked at Luvungi, where he was assistant priest and in charge of the large garage that served various dioceses and which was mercilessly destroyed during the war that began in 1996. «More than once I heard him shouting at how we used the cars. One of his remarks is surely etched in the history of the Xaverians in Congo: “You baptize continuously and you never lack water… you get into the car and drive off on your safaris without realizing that there is no water in the radiator… We speak so much about poverty and we don’t know how to maintain a car!”» (Fr. Fr. Rino Benzoni writes (Oct. 26, 2009): «I remember the “healthy” pride with which he showed me his work… I am pleased to remember in this moment that the mission needs many kinds of presences and services, more often than not of a humble nature, but also the fact that his main activity never distracted him from the pastoral ministry to the Christian communities».
From 1997 until 2004 he worked in Bukavu as Regional Treasurer. «These were years of war and contacts were difficult; the Congo was frequently isolated from the rest of the world. It was far from easy to obtain what we needed to live. There is no religious community, or part of the Dioceses of Bukavu, Uvira, Kasongo and others that did not receive some concrete help from Fr. Crippa, who would remain at his desk working until midnight in order to obtain what was needed» (Fr. G. Brentegani on Oct. 30 2009).
In 2004, he returned to the Diocese of Uvira, to Kavimvira. Four years later, thanks to the generous help of his relatives, he fulfilled a dream in beginning the construction of a hospital in Kamanyola. However, he did not live to see the completion of the work.
Fr. Rino Benzoni comments: «The Lord called him to himself, to give him his reward for a long mission service that he carried out with total dedication making his talents available to the confreres and to the local church».
