Nella notte tra il 4 e il 5 ottobre 209, in Casa Madre è morto nel sonno il P. Giuseppe Carminati.
Era a Parma dal maggio 2003. Aveva 77 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Torre Boldone (BG) il 30.7.1932.
P. Carminati entrò all'Istituto a Grumone nel 1944. Era l'ultimo anno della II guerra mondiale, seguito, in Italia, da un dopoguerra drammatico, per i problemi della pacificazione e ricostruzione. L'Istituto, inoltre, era impegnato a consolidare la sua presenza in Italia: operazione 'costosa' anche per gli aspiranti missionari. La classe di P. Carminati ha percorso l'iter formativo e scolastico dalle medie alla Teologia, cambiando casa quasi ogni anno: Grumone (Preparatoria), Pedrengo (I e II Media), Zelarino (III Media), Piacenza (IV Ginnasio), Zelarino (V Ginnasio), S. Pietro in Vincoli (Noviziato, e la Prima Professione il 12.9.1951), Desio (Liceo), Nizza Monferrato (Prefettato), Piacenza (I-III Teologia), Parma (Ordinazione presbiterale il 9.11.1958 e IV Teologia)».
Ciò nonostante, P. Carminati al traguardo dell'ordinazione si presentava con una più che buona maturità umana e spirituale: «Sono molto favorevole alla sua ammissione [agli Ordini Maggiori]. Ha tutte le doti di pietà, disciplina e studio che si richiedono. Inoltre spicca per l'intelligenza pronta e disciplinata e per una viva e volontaria attività di bene a favore degli altri. La vivezza dell'intelligenza lo porta talora ad essere pungente con gli altri, ma cerca di correggersi. Penso che darà ottimi risultati, specialmente se applicato per diverso tempo allo studio e all'insegnamento» (Presentazione agli Ordini Maggiori, Parma 1958).
Conclusi gli studi teologici (1959), fu inviato a Roma all'Istituto Biblico per la specializzazione in Sacra Scrittura. Dopo due anni, nel 1961, conseguì la Licenza e tornò a Parma per insegnare Scienze Bibliche nella nostra Teologia. «Per sedici anni si è dedicato ininterrottamente ed assiduamente, oltre che all'insegnamento della S. Scrittura, anche al ministero sacerdotale, specialmente tra i giovani. [Che apprezzavano] la sua gioiosa e incoraggiante presenza, la sua parola cordiale ed entusiasta, la sua amicizia schietta e generosa» (Missionari Saveriani, Luglio 1977).
Nel 1976 fu destinato all'Indonesia: «Desidero andare in un'autentica area di missione, in una cultura che non abbia niente di "latino", neanche di "latino-americano", come collaboratore di qualche confratello che mi faccia conoscere bene i problemi che incontrano i confratelli in missione, così da essere in grado, poi, di 'missionarizzare' la mia scuola» (Lett. 12.4.76). In effetti il programma di avvicendamento prevedeva che P. Carminati dopo circa cinque anni tornasse a lavorare in teologia. Ma le cose andarono diversamente. Arrivato in Indonesia nel 1977, vi rimase fino al 2003: parroco dal 78 all'84 e dal 95 al 2002 a Padang-Tirtonadi e dall'85 al 95 a Padang Baru. Dall'81 all'84 ricoprì la carica di Vice Regionale e dall'85 al 93 fu anche Rettore del Seminario di Padang.
In Indonesia P. Carminati ha cercato di essere un missionario 'evangelico': «Al primo impatto [con l'Indonesia] ho sentito con gioia che dovevo sposare la sorte degli indonesiani meno fortunati, per camminare con loro verso un futuro più vero. Poi [ho vissuto] la grande lezione evangelica del ridiventare piccoli, del ritornare bambini nel tentativo di balbettare le prime parole nella nuova lingua … Il terzo passo, il più gioioso, il più fecondo, è stato l'incontro con il mondo di missione e con i missionari … davvero mi sento l'uomo più felice del mondo, e vorrei veder felice anche la mia gente» (Missionari Saveriani, nov.1978).
Ha cercato di realizzare opere 'evangeliche': «Ogni aiuto è andato direttamente alla gente, ai poveri … Mi sono negato fin dal principio di orientarmi verso opere che avrebbero potuto prendere una strada non evangelica» (Lett. 5.2.78).
Nella lettera al Superiore Generale, del 20-10-99, scriveva: «Il mio unico esempio, al quale cerco di ispirarmi, è il P. Spinabelli, che non chiacchierava, ma si dava, era sempre lì, per tutti, come il Cristo nell'eucarestia. Donarsi, servire, aiutare, ridare coraggio, un attimo di felicità, un senso a una disgrazia, alla vita anche più povera e provata, nella semplicità, senza creare opere, commissioni …».
Era convinto che «per far rivivere la missione e noi stessi con iniziative nuove che rispondano alle nuove necessità, ci vuole intelligenza, ci vuole fede, ci vuole coraggio, ci vuole un grano … di pazzia» (Lett. 12.12.86). «Io ho giocato la mia vita non sui ragionamenti sociologici di moda oggi ma su Cristo…» (Lett. 6.7.94).
Il Signore accolga questo suo discepolo nel suo Paradiso.

Fr. Giuseppe Carminati died in his sleep during the night of Oct. 4-5 2009, at the Mother House, in Parma. He had been in Parma since May 2003. Born in Torre Boldone (Bergamo) on July 30 1932, he was 77 years old.
Fr. Carminati joined the Xaverians in Grumone in 1944, during the last year of World War Two. The period immediately afterwards was dramatic in Italy as a result of the problems related to reconciliation and rebuilding. Furthermore, the Xaverian congregation was committed to consolidating its presence in Italy, a costly operation for the missionary aspirants at that time. During its formation and academic program, the class of Fr. Carminati changed house almost every year from high school until Theology: Grumone (Preparatory), Pedrengo (2 years of High School), Zelarino (3rd year of High School), S. Pietro in Vincoli (Novitiate, and First Profession on Sept. 12, 1951), Desio (Liceo), Nizza Monferrato (Prefect), Piacenza (1-3 Theology), Parma (with Ordination to the Priesthood on Nov. 9 1958 and 4th year of Theology).
In spite of this, Fr. Carminati arrived at his ordination with a good level of human and spiritual maturity: «I am very much in favor of his admission [to Major Orders]. «He possesses all the necessary characteristics of devotion, discipline and study. He also stands out for his quick and disciplined intellect and his lively and voluntary activity on behalf of others. His acute intelligence sometimes leads him to be sharp with the others, but he strives to correct this. I think he will achieve excellent results, especially in the fields of study and teaching» (Presentation to Major Orders, Parma, 1958).
Upon conclusion of his theological studies (1959), he was sent to the Biblical Institute in Rome for a specialization in Sacred Scripture. Two years later, in 1981, he obtained the Master and returned to Parma to teach Biblical Sciences in our Theology. «He worked uninterruptedly and assiduously for sixteen years in the teaching of Sacred Scripture and the priestly ministry, especially among the young people. [The latter appreciated] his joyful and encouraging presence, his cordial and enthusiastic words and sincere and generous friendship» (Missionari Saveriani, July 1977).
In 1976 he was assigned to Indonesia: «I want to go to an authentic mission fields, in a culture that has nothing “Latin” or Latin-American about it, as the collaborator of some confrere who will help me to know well the problems encountered by the confreres in the mission, so that I may then give a “missionary flavor” to my academic work» (Letter of April 12, 1976). The rotation program foresaw that Fr. Carminati would return to Parma after five years, to work in the theology community. However, things turned out differently. He arrived in Indonesia in 1977 and stayed there until 2003. He served as parish priest from 1978 until 1984, and from 1995 until 2002 in Padang-Tirtonadi. From 1985 until 1995 he was in Padang Baru. From 1981 until 1984 he was Vice-Regional and from 1985 until 1993 he was also Rector of the Padang Seminary.
Fr. Carminati tried to be an “evangelical missionary” in Indonesia: «On my first impact with Indonesia, I joyfully felt that I had to embrace the destiny of the least fortunate Indonesians, in order to walk with them towards a more authentic future. Then I experienced the great evangelical lesson of becoming a little child once again, in the attempt to babble the first words in the new language… The third step, which was the most joyful and rewording, was my encounter with the world of the mission and the missionaries… I truly feel like the happiest man in the world, and I would like to see my people happy too» (Missionari Saveriani, Nov. 1978).
He tired to accomplish “evangelical works”: «Every help went directly to the people, to the poor… From the very beginning I refused to engage in any form of activity that was not of an evangelical nature» (Letter of Feb. 5, 1978).
He wrote to the Superior General on Oct. 20 1999: «Fr. Spinabelli is the only example I tried to follow; he was not a man of words, but of action; he was always available to all, just like Christ in the Eucharist. To give oneself, serve, help, restore courage, give a moment of happiness, or share meaning in times of tragedy, life in general, even the poorest and worn-out life, in simplicity, without creating great works and committees…».
He was convinced that «intelligence, faith, courage and a touch of… “insanity” were necessary in order to revitalize the mission and ourselves with new initiatives that respond to the new necessities» (Letter of Dec. 12, 1986). «I have staked my life on Christ, instead of on fashionable and modern sociological reasoning…» (Letter of July 6, 1994).
