P. Giovanni Zaltron

Il 7 gennaio 2014, a Vicenza, intorno alle 18,30 è ritornato alla Casa del Padre il P. Giovanni Zaltron. Faceva parte di questa comunità dal 1995. Ultimamente andava peggiorando e perdendo contatto con la realtà. Aveva 93 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Vicenza (Italia) il 21.11.1920.
P. Zaltron entrò all’Istituto a Vicenza nel 1931, dopo le elementari, incoraggiato dai genitori, consigliati a loro volta da P. Pietro Uccelli.
“Temperamento esuberante, impulsivo, focoso, - come scrisse il suo amico il Mo. Cavazzini - ma anche dolce, delicato, sensibilissimo. Capace di cogliere l’inchino di un petalo di rosa o la prepotenza della cima di una roccia” (20.5.90). Era piuttosto irrequieto, un incorreggibile mattacchione amante degli scherzi più impensati. Sia a Vicenza (31-34) che a Grumone (34-36) e in Noviziato solo per un miracolo riuscì ad evitare il cartellino rosso del Superiore di turno.
Emise la Prima Professione il 24.11.1938. “Questa vocazione mi sembra di sentirla radicata profondamente nel mio cuore, sento che questa è la mia vita. I sacrifici e le rinunzie non mi spaventano" (Noviziato, 1938). Frequentò il Liceo a Parma: “Gli studi mi andavano a gonfie vele; in terza finii secondo in graduatoria. L’ambiente risultava severo ma sereno e con liberi spazi, ricco di attività: una ‘Schola cantorum’ polifonica – banda e orchestra – accademie, cinema e teatro – la rivista interna ‘Sicut incensum’ ove inserii i miei primi versi – grandi partite di calcio, tennis e palla a volo. Mi innamorai del flauto e fui anche organista” (Passione d’Africa, p 38).
Nell’anno scolastico ’41-’42 fu prefetto a Poggio San Marcello. Ritornò quindi a Parma per la Teologia. Negli anni cruciali della seconda guerra mondiale; in un clima di accentuato ascetismo nella comunità saveriana. Il 20 aprile 1946 fu ordinato presbitero: “Sento tutta la freschezza del nuovo mattino; non avverto quasi il peso di me stesso, mi sento pieno di un indefinibile senso di pace: sono felice” (16.4.46).
Un senso di pace che non venne meno neppure quando, dopo un anno di Prefetto e insegnante a Grumone, fu destinato al settore economico. Un ambito per il quale non si sentiva portato: “Senso pratico, zero; nessuna attrattiva per i lavori e gli affari; romantico di natura, amante della musica, intento a comporre versi e con un appassionato interesse per la scuola. «Il caso non esiste – mi ripetevo - sono le vie di Dio»”.
Fu aiuto economo a Desio e, dal ‘50 al ‘65, Economo a Vicenza. In questa comunità lo attendeva la riparazione dei danni di guerra e l’ampliamento della casa, e contemporaneamente il mantenimento di più di un centinaio di ‘apostolini’, con qualche punta oltre i centocinquanta. Anni di spole interminabili negli uffici comunali e regionali; di tensione per i lavori; di giornate missionarie a non finire per l’animazione vocazionale e per il mantenimento degli studenti. Quasi tutto perfettamente.
Nel dicembre del ’63 ricevette la destinazione per il Burundi: “A Casa di Vicenza compiuta - gli scrisse il P. Generale - è ora che ti dia il gran premio. Credimi, vuol essere proprio un premio e un atto di fiducia” (19.12.63). Giunse a Bujumbura nel ’66 e dal ’67 al ’77 fu Economo della Casa Regionale, Amministratore Regionale di Congo-Burundi e Procuratore della Missione. “Era un ottimo confratello che univa la regolarità della sua vita personale e la serietà e la competenza con cui svolgeva il suo compito” (P. G. Ferrari).
Dopo dieci anni di lavoro a Bujumbura gli fu chiesto di passare alla Procura di Parma. “So quanto ti costa – gli scrisse P. Generale -. Ti assicuro che te lo chiedo, proprio perchè penso che il tuo sacrificio ne vale la pena” (7.1.77). In questo servizio, durato fino 1995, fu “sempre disponibile ad accompagnare nei vari uffici per la patente di guida, passaporto, carta d’identità, tessera sanitaria, tessera elettorale. Oltre ai frequenti viaggi a Linate e Malpensa per accogliere o accompagnare confratelli in arrivo o partenza. E l’immancabile partecipazione ai funerali dei parenti dei missionari” (P. V. Anzanello).
“P. Zaltron era un missionario vero, un uomo di Dio, fedele alla sua vocazione, pronto all’obbedienza, che amava l’Istituto missionario di Mons. Conforti” (P. Ferrari). “Preoccupato di avere scritto solo la ‘brutta’ della sua vita. Ma anche sicuro di avere udito Qualcuno sussurrare: Non ti affannare, provvederò io a metterla in bella”.

Fr. Giovanni Zaltron died on 7 January 2014, in Vicenza, where he had been a member of the community since 1995. Born in Vicenza (Italy), on 21 November 1920, he was 93 years old.
Fr. Zaltron joined the Institute in Vicenza, at the end of primary school, in 1931, encouraged by his parents, who were in their turn encouraged by Fr. Pietro Uccelli. In the words of a friend, he had “an exuberant, impulsive and fiery temperament, yet he was also gentle and very sensitive.” (20.5.90). He was quite boisterous, an incorrigible joker who loved to play unbelievable practical tricks.
He made his First Profession on 24 November 1938. “I believe this vocation has deep roots within my heart; I feel that this is the life for me. The sacrifices and the renunciations do not scare me” (Novitiate, 1938).
He attended senior high school in Parma: “My studies were plain sailing and, in third year, I was second in the class. The atmosphere was strict, but serene and with room for freedom and varied activities: a polyphonic Schola cantorum (band and orchestra), cinema and theatre; the internal magazine Sicut incensum, in which I published my first verses; great games of soccer, tennis and volleyball. I fell in love with the flute and I also played the organ” (Passione d’Africa, p 38).
In the academic year 1941-42 he was prefect at Poggio San Marcello. He then returned to Parma for theology. The crucial years of World War Two were lived in an atmosphere of heightened asceticism in the Xaverian community. He was ordained priest on 20 April 1946: “I feel all the beauty of a new dawn; I am filled with an indefinable sense of peace: I am happy” (16.4.46).
His inner peace did not fail him even when, after a year as Prefect and teacher at Grumone, he was assigned to the financial sector. This was an area for which he had no inclination. In his own words: “Pragmatism, zero; no attraction for business; I am romantic by nature, a lover of music, interested in composing poetry and with a passionate interest in school. Yet I told myself that there is no such thing as coincidence. This is what God wants”.
He served assistant treasurer in Desio and, from 1950 until 1965, treasurer in Vicenza. In this community he took charge of the work to repair the damage caused during the war, extension work on the house and the upkeep of more than a hundred minor seminarians, whose numbers sometimes peaked at over 150. They were years of endless going to and fro between municipal and regional offices; years of tension caused by the various works; years of endless mission appeals for vocation promotion and to provide for the upkeep of the students.
In December 1963 he was assigned to Burundi. The Superior General wrote to him: “Now that the Vicenza house has been completed, it is time to give you the great prize. Believe me, this assignment is both a reward and a gesture of trust” (19.12.63). He arrived in Bujumbura in 1966 and, from 1967 until 1977, he served as treasurer of the Regional House, Regional Administrator of Congo-Burundi and Mission Procurator. “He was an excellent confrere who combined the regularity of his personal life with the serious and competent way in which he carried out his task” (P. G. Ferrari).
After ten years of work at Bujumbura he was asked to move to the Parma Procura. The Superior General wrote to him: “I know how much this costs you. I assure you that I am asking you precisely because I think your sacrifice is worth it” (7.1.77). In this service, which lasted until 1995, he was “always available to accompany confreres to various offices for a driving license, passport, identity card, health insurance card, voter’s card. In addition, the frequent trips to the airports of Linate and Malpensa to pick up or drop off arriving and departing confreres, and his unfailing participation in the funerals of the relatives of the missionaries” (Fr. V. Anzanello).
“Fr. Zaltron was a true missionary, a man of God, faithful to his vocation, a man who obeyed promptly and who loved the missionary Institute of Bishop Conforti” (Fr. Ferrari).
