Message final de la rencotre du CEA a Makeni / Sierra Leone

Du 2 au 6 août 2026, les représentants du Centre d’Études Africaines se sont réunis à Makeni, en Sierra Leone, terre où débuta la première mission xavérienne en Afrique. Cette rencontre, placée sous le signe du retour aux sources, de la recherche et de la communion, a permis de relire le chemin parcouru et de définir de nouvelles perspectives au service de la mission évangélisatrice sur le continent.

1. En date du 02 au 06 Août 2026, se sont réunis à Makeni en Sierra Leone, les représentants du Centre d’Etudes Africaines, venant des différentes régions et circonscriptions d’Afrique. Après une présentation de chacun des membres présents à cette rencontre, le supérieur délégué de la SL a adressé un mot de bienvenue et de remerciement à la DG et à la coordination du CEA pour le choix du pays où a commencé la première mission xavérienne en Afrique, un retour d’après lui, aux origines de notre fondation, en terre africaine.
2. Le P. Fabien Kalehezo quant à lui, nous a transmis les salutations de membres de la Direction générale et nous a rappelés l’objectif du CEA qui est de promouvoir la recherche au service de la mission évangélisatrice en Afrique et contribuer à la formation permanente des confrères. Le but de cette rencontre était aussi d’encourager tous les confrères qui travaillent en Afrique à s’approprier les travaux du CEA et à s’engager à leur tour dans la recherche et la vulgarisation des publications déjà réalisées.
3. Le confrère sierraléonais Patrick A. Fornah nous a présenté le pays hôte comme une terre pacifique mais qui a connu des années sombres de guerre civile. La sortie de la guerre sanglante a été rendue possible entre autres, grâce à l’apport des églises et de la société civile qui prônaient le pardon et l’oubli. Evoquant son expérience à la tête de la coordination du CEA le P. Gabriel Basuzwa nous a exhortés à poser un regard positif sur l’Afrique et à éviter le complexe d’incapacité.
4. Après, nous avons passé en revue tous les travaux réalisés ces dix dernières années avec la variété des thèmes abordés tels que : 500 ans de la réforme protestante, les croyances, la jeunesse, le rôle de la femme, le pentecôtisme, la synodalité, etc. Nous avons ensuite choisi les thèmes que nous allons exploiter les deux prochaines années : les religieux africains face au phénomène de sorcellerie (1), Regard missionnaire sur les sociétés secrètes traditionnelles africaines (2), Quelle figure d’autorité dans nos sociétés aujourd’hui (3) ainsi que, Démographie et immigration des jeunes (4).
5. Le dernier jour a été consacré à la préparation du colloque commémorant le 20^e anniversaire du CEA en 2028. Comme le CEA est né à Yaoundé au Cameroun, il a été proposé d’y revenir pour célébrer les 20 ans de son existence avec la possibilité d’inviter quelques pionniers. Ce colloque sera placé sous le thème : « Rapport entre charismes religieux et les églises locales ». Les autres modalités pratiques restent à définir.

The CEA in Makeni: A Return to Our Roots to Rethink the Mission in Africa

Final message from the CEA meeting in Makeni / Sierra Leone

From 2 to 6 August 2026, representatives of the Centre for African Studies met in Makeni, Sierra Leone, where the first Xaverian mission in Africa began. Marked by a return to the roots, research and communion, the meeting offered an opportunity to review the journey so far and identify new perspectives in service of the evangelising mission on the continent.

1. From 2 to 6 August 2026, representatives of the Centre for African Studies (CEA), coming from various regions and constituencies across Africa, met in Makeni, Sierra Leone. Following introductions by each of the members present at the meeting, the Delegate Superior of the SL delivered a welcome address and expressed his thanks to the General Directorate and the CEA coordination team for regarding the choice of the country where the first Xaverian mission in Africa began – which, in his view, marks a return to the origins of our foundation on African soil.
2. Fabien Kalehezo, for his part, conveyed greetings from members of the General Administration and reminded us of the CEA’s objective, which is to promote research in the service of the evangelising mission in Africa and to contribute to the ongoing formation of our confreres. The aim of this meeting was also to encourage all our colleagues working in Africa to take ownership of the CEA’s work and, in turn, to commit themselves to researching and disseminating the publications already produced.
3. Our confrere from Sierra Leone, Patrick A. Fornah, described the host country as a peaceful land, albeit one that has experienced dark years of civil war. The end to the bloody war was made possible, amongst other things, thanks to the contribution of the churches and civil society, which advocated forgiveness and letting go of the past. Reflecting on his experience as head of the CEA coordination, Fr Gabriel Basuzwa urged us to take a positive view of Africa and to avoid an inferiority complex.
4. We then reviewed all the work carried out over the last ten years, covering a wide range of topics such as: the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, beliefs, young people, the role of women, Pentecostalism, synodality, etc. We then selected the themes we will be exploring over the next two years: African religious leaders and the phenomenon of witchcraft (1), A missionary perspective on traditional African secret societies (2), What kind of authority figure do we have in our societies today? (3), and Demographics and youth migration (4).
5. The final day was devoted to preparations for the symposium marking the 20th anniversary of the CEA in 2028. As the CEA was founded in Yaoundé, Cameroon, it was proposed to return there to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with the possibility of inviting some of its pioneers. The theme of this symposium will be: ‘The relationship between religious charisms and local churches’. The other practical arrangements are yet to be finalised.

Messaggio finale dell’incontro del CEA a Makeni / Sierra Leone

Dal 2 al 6 agosto 2026, i rappresentanti del Centro di Studi Africani si sono riuniti a Makeni, in Sierra Leone, terra in cui ebbe inizio la prima missione saveriana in Africa. Nel segno del ritorno alle origini, della ricerca e della comunione, l’incontro ha permesso di rileggere il cammino percorso e di delineare nuove prospettive al servizio della missione evangelizzatrice nel continente.

1. Dal 2 al 6 agosto 2026, si sono riuniti a Makeni, in Sierra Leone, i rappresentanti del Centro di Studi Africani, provenienti dalle diverse regioni e circoscrizioni dell’Africa. Dopo una presentazione di ciascuno dei membri presenti all’incontro, il superiore delegato della SL ha rivolto un discorso di benvenuto e di ringraziamento alla DG e al coordinamento del CEA per la scelta del Paese in cui ebbe inizio la prima missione saveriana in Africa, un ritorno, secondo lui, alle origini della nostra fondazione, in terra africana.

2. Padre Fabien Kalehezo, dal canto suo, ci ha trasmesso i saluti dei membri della Direzione Generale e ci ha ricordato l’obiettivo del CEA, che è quello di promuovere la ricerca al servizio della missione evangelizzatrice in Africa e di contribuire alla formazione permanente dei confratelli. Lo scopo di questo incontro era anche quello di incoraggiare tutti i colleghi che lavorano in Africa a fare propri i lavori del CEA e a impegnarsi a loro volta nella ricerca e nella divulgazione delle pubblicazioni già realizzate.

3. Il confratello sierraleonese Patrick A. Fornah ci ha presentato il Paese ospitante come una terra pacifica, che tuttavia ha vissuto anni bui di guerra civile. La fine di quella sanguinosa guerra è stata resa possibile, tra l’altro, grazie al contributo delle chiese e della società civile, che promuovevano il perdono e l’oblio. Riferendosi alla sua esperienza alla guida del coordinamento del CEA, padre Gabriel Basuzwa ci ha esortato a guardare all’Africa con occhio positivo e a evitare il complesso di inferiorità.

4. Abbiamo poi passato in rassegna tutti i lavori realizzati negli ultimi dieci anni, con una varietà di temi trattati quali: i 500 anni della Riforma protestante, le credenze, i giovani, il ruolo della donna, il pentecostalismo, la sinodalità, ecc. Abbiamo quindi scelto i temi che tratteremo nei prossimi due anni: i religiosi africani di fronte al fenomeno della stregoneria (1), Uno sguardo missionario sulle società segrete tradizionali africane (2), Quale figura di autorità nelle nostre società oggi (3) e Demografia e immigrazione dei giovani (4).

5. L'ultimo giorno è stato dedicato alla preparazione del convegno per commemorare il 20° anniversario del CEA nel 2028. Poiché il CEA è nato a Yaoundé, in Camerun, è stato proposto di tornare in quella città per celebrare i 20 anni della sua esistenza, con la possibilità di invitare alcuni pionieri. Il convegno avrà come tema: «Il rapporto tra carismi religiosi e Chiese locali». Le altre modalità pratiche restano da definire.
