7 Febbraio : Memoria della Beata Anna Maria Adorni
Mi è capitato tra le mani un libro scritto da Augusto Luca (Anna Maria Adorni, madre degli ultimi, Paoline 2010).
Oltre a nutrire per P. Augusto, ormai alla soglia dei cent’anni, una simpatia personale gli sono anche riconoscente per tanti motivi.
È sua infatti la prima biografia su Guido Conforti (Sono tutti miei figli) che lessi da giovincello e che mi aiutò a conoscere il fondatore dei Missionari Saveriani.
Questa è la storia di una donna : Anna Maria Adorni. Nata a Fivizzano in Lunigiana, il 18 giugno 1805 e vissuta a Parma dove morì nel 1893.
Il Conforti ancora seminarista volle incontrarla per chiedere consiglio. Attraversava il primo grande momento critico della sua vita : la malattia che sembrava precludergli il cammino verso il sacerdozio.
Devo ammettere che il motivo che mi ha spinto alla lettura non è stato l’interesse per la vita di una « beata » e fondatrice (Istituto del Buon Pastore e Congregazione delle Ancelle dell’Immacolata), quanto piuttosto una curiosità personale per le storie di donne forti, di donne che lasciano o che hanno lasciato il segno nell’arte, nella storia, nella letteratura e nella vita di tutti i giorni e delle persone.
Mi sono lasciato incuriosire dalla storia di una donna che prima di diventare suora, fu moglie e madre, e prendere dalla lettura cercando di sapere, di conoscere, di capire, di immaginare.
Il P. Augusto propone un’accurata biografia e mostra una particolare attenzione per accompagnare il lettore a comprendere la figura di Anna Maria Adorni nel contesto del suo tempo, tra la fine del ducato di Parma e l’avvento del Regno d’Italia.
A volte bastano poche pagine per incontrare qualcuno.
Nella storia di Anna Maria vedo la speranza, e la possibilità di un cambiamento.
É la storia di una donna comune che a quindici anni rimane orfana di padre e che con la madre si trasferisce a Parma al servizio, come istitutrice, di una famiglia.
Nel 1826 si sposa e nel 1844 rimane vedova. Diciotto anni di vita coniugale, sei figli e tanti, troppi, lutti. Una storia come tante, purtroppo.
È una donna che crede, crede in se stessa, crede in un ideale, che non si scoraggia, che ricomincia anche quando tutto sembra perduto : dove tutto potrebbe finire, ecco che tutto inizia.
Dopo la morte del marito trova la sua missione nelle carceri cittadine dove si occupa dell’assistenza alle donne recluse ; si preoccupa concretamente per assicurare loro un’assistenza al momento dell’uscita dal carcere, garantendo una prospettiva di vita diversa e migliore ; istituisce una casa di ricovero e di assistenza sanitaria per le ammalate.
La trovo straordinaria.
Come trovo straordinario che Guido Conforti si rivolga a lei verso la quale nutre una profonda ammirazione, per chiedere consiglio, a lei, donna, madre, sorella, amica, per ricominciare a credere nel suo sogno.
Credo sia una storia che andrebbe conosciuta, raccontata.
Storia di incontri e di strade che si aprono, di mani capaci di incoraggiare, sorreggere, amare, infondere speranza.
Storia nella quale potersi conoscere, riconoscere, e perchè no, ricominciare.

I have been reading a book by Augusto Luca: Anna Maria Adorni, madre degli ultimi, Paoline 2010.
In addition to my high regard for Fr. Luca (who will soon celebrate his 100th birthday), I am also grateful to him for many reasons.
He is the author of the first biography on Guido Conforti (Sono tutti miei figli), which I read when I was a young boy and which helped me to know the Founder of the Xaverian Missionaries.
This book, instead, is the story of a woman, Anna Maria Adorni, who was born in Fivizzano, Lunigiana, on 18 June 1805. She lived in Parma and died there in 1893.
When Conforti was still a seminarian he sought her advice because he was experiencing the first great crisis of his life, in the form of the illness that seemed to exclude him from pursuing his vocation to the priesthood.
I must admit that I was not moved to read this book by an interest in the life of a « blessed » who founded the Istituto del Buon Pastore e Congregazione delle Ancelle dell’Immacolata, but by a personal curiosity regarding the stories of strong women who have left a mark on art, history, literature and the daily life of men and women.
I was captivated by this story of a woman who was a wife and mother before she became a nun, and through my reading I tried to know, understand and imagine what her life was like.
Fr. Augusto has written a detailed biography and helps the reader to understand the figure of Anna Maria Adorni in the context of her times, between the end of the duchy of Parma and the beginning of the kingdom of Italy.
Sometimes a few lines are enough to encounter someone.
In the story of Anna Maria I see hope and the possibility of change.
It is the story of an ordinary woman who lost her father when she was fifteen years old, and who then moved to Parma with her mother to work in a family home as an governess.
She married in 1826 and was widowed in 1844: eighteen years of married life, six children and many, too many, bereavements; a story like many others, unfortunately.
This is a woman who believed, believed in herself, believed in an ideal, a woman who did not get discouraged, who began all over again even when all seemed lost: just when it seemed that everything had ended, it was actually a new beginning.
After her husband’s death, she discovered her mission in the town’s prisons where she assisted female inmates; she took special care to guarantee them assistance upon their release from prison, offering them the prospect of a different and better life; she established a place of refuge and health care for sick women.
I believe she was an extraordinary woman.
Just as I find it extraordinary that Guido Conforti turned to her in profound admiration for advice, to a woman, mother, sister and friend, so that he could begin to believe once again in his own dream.
I believe it is a story that should be known and told.
A story of encounters and of paths that open up, of people who are capable of encouraging, sustaining, loving and instilling courage in others.
A story with which we can identify and from which we can draw inspiration for a new beginning.
