San Romero d’America prega per noi!
Era il mese di marzo 1980 ed io, di ritorno dal primo turno di missione in Brasile Nord, (Amazzonia, come allora si chiamava anche tra i saveriani) mi trovavo in Venezuela a casa di mio fratello. Il giorno 25 Marzo, mio nipote mi mostra il giornale con una foto a tutto tondo di Mons. Romero, morto ammazzato, durante la Messa. Conoscevo questo vescovo per fama, specialmente grazie all’amicizia che avevo instaurato con Mons. Pedro Casaldaliga vescovo di Conceição di Araguaia, nel Mato Grosso. Mio nipote mi dice: “Stai attento zio che fanno fuori anche te!” Ed io scherzandoci su, avevo risposto: “non preoccuparti, per adesso ce l’hanno con i vescovi, ed io sono un semplice prete!”
Sono passati 37 anni, Mons. Romero è già beato. Forse quest’anno sarà dichiarato ufficialmente santo. In verità lo è già nella pietà popolare, non solo tra i cattolici, ma anche tra gli anglicani.
Chi l’ha ucciso è rimasto impunito fino ad oggi. Forse pensava di seppellirlo per sempre nell’oblio, mentre altri, suoi detrattori, fuori e dentro la stessa chiesa sono caduti nel dimenticatoio della storia.
Secondo i biografi furono le parole della sua ultima omelia (23 marzo 1980) a condannarlo a morte: “In nome di Dio, dunque, in nome di questo popolo martoriato, del quale si alzano fino al cielo grida sempre più assordanti, vi supplico, vi prego, vi ordino in nome di Dio, cessi la repressione”
Ho letto con interesse la notizia che il 24 marzo prossimo al "Romero Days" all’Università Notre Dame in Indiana, EE.UU, Mons. Romero sarà proposto come Dottore della Chiesa. La proposta pare essere sostenuta anche da alcuni cardinali.
Fondamentale per me, e per molti cristiani soprattutto in America Latina, è che la profezia e la voce di Mons. Romero non si spengano; che ogni iniziativa ravvivi la sua memoria, raccolga la sua eredità e serva per continuare il cammino da lui tracciato.
Perché si possa continuare, sia pure in mezzo a conflitti e ingiustizie quel cammino che secondo Papa Francesco ha un solo nome: “non violenza attiva”.

St. Romero of America, pray for us!
In March 1980, I visited my brother in Venezuela on my way back from my first mission period in South Brazil (the Xaverians then called it the Amazons). On 25 March, my niece showed me the newspaper with a photograph of Bishop Romero, who had been murdered during Mass. I knew this bishop by reputation, thanks to my friendship with Bishop Pedro Casaldaliga of Conceição do Araguaia, in Mato Grosso. My niece said to me: “Be careful uncle, they will kill you too!” And I jokingly replied: “don’t worry, for now they are going after bishops and I am just a simple priest!”
37 years have passed since that day and Bishop Romero has since been beatified. Perhaps this year he will be canonized. In all truth, he has already been canonized by popular piety, not only by Catholics but by Anglicans too.
The people who killed him have never been brought to justice. Perhaps they thought they were consigning him to eternal oblivion, whilst his detractors, both inside and outside the Church, have faded into history, forgotten by everyone.
According to his biographers, the words of his last homily (23 March 1980) condemned him to death: “In the name of God, in the name of this suffering people whose cries rise to heaven more loudly each day, I implore you, I beg you, I order you in the name of God: stop the repression”.
I read with interest that, on 24 March, during the "Romero Days" of the Notre Dame University, Indiana (USA), Bishop Romero will be proposed as a Doctor of the Church. It seems that this proposal is supported by some cardinals too.
It is very important to me and many Christians, especially in Latin America, that the prophecy and the voice of Bishop Romero should never fade away; may every initiative revive his memory, treasure his heritage and inspire us to continue the journey he began.
Pope Francis tells us that this continuity, in the midst conflicts and injustice, will be possible only through “active non-violence”.
