Beato Paolo Manna – Tutta la Chiesa per tutto il mondo!
Il prossimo 16 Gennaio, il Calendario saveriano 2017 ci invita a celebrare la memoria del beato Padre Paolo Manna, del PIME, fondatore nel 1916 della Pontificia Unione Missionaria del Clero (UMC) e beatificato da Giovanni Paolo II il 4 novembre 2001. Paolo Manna fu un sacerdote missionario “il cui nome merita di essere scolpito a caratteri d’oro negli annali delle missioni” (Paolo VI). Al di là dei risultati ottenuti, ha dato con la sua vita e la sua opera una espressione specifica della missionarietà della Chiesa universale infondendo nel popolo cristiano un’autentica coscienza missionaria, attraverso il coinvolgimento di vescovi e clero nella evangelizzazione dei non cristiani.
Furono decisivi l’amicizia e l’aiuto di Mons. Guido M. Conforti, che durò fino al consolidamento della UMC e fino alla morte di Conforti. Questi volentieri accettò di essere “l’intermediario” che facilitò la presentazione e la approvazione entusiasta da parte di Benedetto XV della UMC. Quando nel 1927 Mons. Conforti lasciò la presidenza dell’UMC, in Italia le diocesi organizzate erano 277 su 320 e i soci 21.714. Padre Manna era convinto che un clero missionario avrebbe animato missionariamente tutto il popolo cristiano. Anticipò alcuni dei grandi temi missiologici e della metodologia missionaria del Concilio Vaticano II. Tutta la Chiesa – sicuramente quella italiana – è in qualche modo debitrice a questo grande missionario.
Due considerazioni
1- Nel commemorare il Beato Paolo Manna, ringraziamo Dio per il dono di un missionario che ancora oggi illustra a tutta la Chiesa in cosa consiste l’autentico spirito missionario: la strada della santità come fecondità della missione. “Nel Padre Paolo Manna noi scorgiamo uno speciale riflesso della gloria di Dio. Egli spese l’intera esistenza per la causa missionaria. In tutte le pagine dei suoi scritti emerge viva la persona di Gesù, centro della vita e ragion d’essere della missione. In una delle sue lettere ai missionari egli afferma: «Il missionario di fatto non è niente se non impersona Gesù Cristo… Solo il missionario che copia fedelmente Gesù Cristo in sé stesso può riprodurne l’immagine nelle anime degli altri». In realtà non c’è missione senza santità, come ho ribadito nell’enciclica Redemptoris Missio 90: “La spiritualità missionaria della Chiesa è un cammino verso la santità. Occorre suscitare un nuovo ardore di santità fra i missionari e in tutta la comunità cristiana” (Giovanni Paolo II nella beatificazione del Padre Paolo Manna, 4 novembre 2001). Nell’anima di un missionario non ci può essere posto per la tiepidezza, per la grettezza, per la riserva, per le mezze misure. Non dimentichiamo che siamo allo stesso tempo destinatari e missionari del Vangelo.
2- Uno dei principali motti di P. Manna, sintesi del suo progetto, era: «tutta la Chiesa per tutto il mondo!». O, con una espressione forse più efficace ma tipica del suo tempo, «tutti i fedeli per tutti gli infedeli». Qui possiamo apprezzare la sua “rivoluzione profetica”: il problema missionario riguarda non solo i missionari ma tutta la Chiesa e, come tale, esige una soluzione globale. Tutti i battezzati, laici, sacerdoti, vescovi; diocesi e parrocchie, congregazioni religiose, associazioni laicali e movimenti ecclesiali. La missione è affidata non solo ai missionari ma è opera di tutto il Popolo di Dio, di tutta la Chiesa. Non per niente, papa Giovanni XXIII, che lo conosceva bene, definiva P. Manna «il Cristoforo Colombo della nuova cooperazione missionaria». L’enciclica Redemptoris Missio n.84 lo cita: «La parola d’ordine deve essere questa: tutte le Chiese per la conversione di tutto il mondo».
Conclusione
All’origine della Pontificia Unione Missionaria del Clero, c’è la consapevolezza da parte di P. Manna della grande ignoranza e del disinteresse dei sacerdoti e dei vescovi verso “l’opera massima della Chiesa”: il primo annuncio. Oggi, per molti, il fatto che sia cresciuta la consapevolezza che tutta la Chiesa è missionaria sembra significare che gli istituti missionari non abbiano più senso. Ma è proprio così? Il Beato Paolo Manna probabilmente si scaglierebbe contro questa nuova forma di ignoranza, che tocca anche gli Istituti missionari. Questi, infatti, tendono a scappare dalla fatica di una approfondita riflessione sui cambiamenti della missione e sulle conseguenze pratiche del loro modo di fare missione. Anche il Magistero ecclesiale recente conferma la validità e la necessità della vocazione speciale dei missionari ad gentes e ad vitam. La Chiesa certamente non si riferisce più alla “soluzione del problema missionario” nei termini del beato Paolo Manna, ma continua a considerare la missio ad gentes ancora ai primi passi rispetto – per esempio – alle sterminate popolazioni dell’Asia che ancora non conoscono Gesù Cristo.
La vita di P. Manna ci sia di esempio per comprendere meglio anche la nostra: con la sua intercessione, una vita interamente animata da una totale passione missionaria.
Blessed Paolo Manna – The entire Church for the whole world!
On 16 January, the Calendario saveriano 2017 invites us to celebrate the memorial of Blessed Father Paolo Manna of the PIME, who founded the Pontifical Missionary Union of the Clergy (MUC) in 1916 and was beatified by Pope John Paul II, on 4 November 2001. Paolo Manna was a missionary priest “whose name deserves to be carved in gold letters in the annals of the missions” (Paul VI). Beyond the results he achieved, through his life and work he gave a specific expression to the missionary identity of the Church, by instilling an authentic missionary awareness in the Christian people, through the involvement of bishops and clergy in the evangelization of non-Christians.
The friendship and assistance of Bishop Guido M. Conforti were crucial and lasted from the consolidation of the MUC until Conforti’s death. Conforti was happy to be the “intermediary” who facilitated the presentation of the MUC and its enthusiastic approval by Pope Benedict XV. When Bishop Conforti left the presidency of the MUC in 1927, 277 out of 320 dioceses belonged to it and it numbered 21,714 members. Father Manna was convinced that a missionary clergy would guarantee the missionary animation of the entire Christian people. He anticipated some of the great missiological topics and missionary methodology of the Second Vatican Council. The entire Church – and without a doubt the Italian Church – are in some way indebted to this great missionary.
Two reflections
1- As we commemorate Blessed Paolo Manna, we thank God for the gift of a missionary who, even today, continues to show the entire Church what the authentic missionary spirit is: the path of holiness as fecundity of the mission. “In Father Paolo Manna we perceive a special reflection of the glory of God. He spent his entire life promoting the missions. In every page of his writings there stands out the person of Jesus, center of his life and reason for the missions. In one of his letters to the missionaries, he stated: "In fact the missionary is nothing if he does not put on the person of Jesus Christ.... Only the missionary who copies Jesus Christ faithfully in himself can reproduce his image in the souls of others". Indeed, there are no missions without holiness, as the Encyclical Redemptoris Missio pointed out: "The missionary spirituality of the Church consists in the movement towards holiness. One must stir up a new zeal for holiness among missionaries and in the whole Christian community" (no. 90).” (Homily of Pope John Paul II at the Beatification of Father Paolo Manna, 4 November 2001). In the soul of a missionary there can be no place for tepidity, crassness, reserve, half-measures. Let us not forget that we are, at the same time, addressees and missionaries of the Gospel.
2- One of the main mottos of Father Manna, which summed up his project, was: «the entire Church for the whole world!». Or, with an expression that is perhaps more effective, but typical of his times, «all the faithful for all the infidels». Here we can appreciate his “prophetic revolution”: the missionary problem concerns not just the missionaries, but the entire Church and, as such, it calls for a global solution. All the baptized, lay people, priests, bishops; dioceses and parishes, religious congregations, lay associations and ecclesial movements. The mission is entrusted not only to the missionaries, but is the work of the entire People of God and the entire Church. With good reason, Pope John XXIII, who knew him well, defined Father Manna as «the Christopher Columbus of the new missionary cooperation ». The encyclical Redemptoris Missio (no.84) quotes him: «This must be our motto: All the churches united for the conversion of the whole world».
Conclusion
At the origin of the Pontifical Missionary Union of the Clergy, there is Fr. Manna’s awareness of the great ignorance and lack of interest of priests and bishops regarding “the greatest work of the Church”: the first proclamation. Today, for many, the fact that there is a greater awareness that the entire Church is missionary seems to signify that the missionary institutes no longer have any meaning. But is it so? The Blessed Paolo Manna would probably anathematize this new form of ignorance, which also affects the missionary Institutes. Indeed, the missionary Institutes tend to shun the effort of undertaking a profound reflection on the changes that have taken place in the mission and on the practical consequences of their way of doing mission. The recent ecclesial Magisterium also confirms the validity and the necessity of the special vocation of missionaries ad gentes and ad vitam. Undoubtedly the Church no longer refers to the “solution of the missionary problem” in the terms used by Blessed Paolo Manna, but continues to look upon the missio ad gentes as being in its infancy stage with respect to – for example – the immense populations of Asia who do not yet know Jesus Christ. One could say that the missionary Institutes too - and not just the parishes and dioceses - stand in need of a missionary conversion.
May Father Manna’s life be an example to us for understanding better our own life: through his intercession, a life that is entirely animated by a total missionary enthusiasm.
