Sui viaggi e gli spostamenti
«A chiunque è stato dato molto, molto sarà richiesto; e a chi è stato affidato molto, sarà richiesto ancor di più.» (Lc 12,48)
Carissimi confratelli,
giunti al termine dell’ottava seduta del Consiglio Generale, vi raggiungiamo con questa lettera. Ci troviamo in un momento importante nel cammino delle nostre comunità: l’elaborazione del progetto comunitario di vita! Un tempo prezioso per riflettere sui valori che ci guideranno e sulle scelte concrete che da essi scaturiranno.
In questo contesto, desideriamo richiamare l’attenzione delle comunità sull’importanza di programmare, fin dall’inizio dell’anno, i viaggi e gli spostamenti dei confratelli, soprattutto tra paesi diversi, ricordando che il permesso è di competenza del Superiore di Circoscrizione (cf. Vademecum SG 7.7).
Abbiamo infatti notato in alcune occasioni una certa facilità negli spostamenti, spesso effettuati senza valutare troppo i costi o senza una pianificazione adeguata, in contrasto con il voto di obbedienza, che richiede il permesso del superiore, e con il voto di povertà, che ci invita a considerare “le esigenze del Vangelo” nell’uso dei mezzi (Cost. 26.1).
In particolare, ci riferiamo a situazioni come:
- il rinnovo dei passaporti che richiede di tornare nel paese di origine, da prevedere durante il tempo delle vacanze;
- il cambio di missione e la relativa richiesta del visto, dal momento in cui un confratello riceve la destinazione è necessario preoccuparsi subito del visto e non prolungare all’infinito il cambio di Regione e il moltiplicarsi dei viaggi;
- la partecipazione a incontri generali o di formazione permanente nel proprio paese da far coincidere con il periodo delle vacanze per evitare spese eccessive;
- spostamenti tra paesi per celebrazioni di battesimi o matrimoni…
Gli esempi potrebbero moltiplicarsi, ma ciò che qui è in gioco è il nostro voto di povertà che ci invita a uno stile di vita “non troppo lontano dalla gente che serviamo” (Cost. 26.2), e la responsabilità nel gestire con sobrietà le risorse che la Provvidenza ci affida.
Questa lettera diventa l’occasione – all’inizio di un nuovo anno comunitario - per rileggere insieme la sezione del nostro “Vademecum” circa “I viaggi all’estero” (SG 7.6-8) e “Le vacanze” (SG 7.9-14). Vi chiediamo scusa se insistiamo su questi valori, ma pur riconoscendo che oggi gli spostamenti sono più facili ed economici rispetto al passato, questo non ci esime dal vivere fedelmente ciò che abbiamo promesso nel giorno della professione religiosa, soprattutto nel campo dell’obbedienza e della povertà.
Accogliete queste parole con sincero affetto e in spirito di carità fraterna. Vengono dal cuore e vogliono essere un aiuto, prima di tutto a noi stessi, per vivere secondo lo spirito confortiano.

On Travels and Movements

Dear confreres,
As we come to the end of the eighth session of the General Council, we reach out to you with this letter. We find ourselves at an important moment in the journey of our communities: the elaboration of the community life project! This is a precious time to reflect on the values that will guide us and the concrete choices that will arise from them.
In this context, we wish to draw the communities' attention to the importance of planning, from the beginning of the year, the travels and movements of the confreres, especially between different countries, remembering that permission is the responsibility of the Circumscription Superior (cf. Vademecum SG 7.7).
Indeed, we have occasionally noted a certain ease in travel, often undertaken without careful consideration of costs or adequate planning, in conflict with the vow of obedience, which requires the superior's permission, and the vow of poverty, which invites us to consider "the demands of the Gospel" in the use of means of transport (Const. 26.1).
In particular, we are referring to situations such as:
- passport renewals, which require a return to the country of origin, should be scheduled during the vacation period;
- a change of mission and the related visa application; from the moment a confrere receives his assignment, it is necessary to immediately arrange for the visa and avoid indefinitely prolonging the change of Region and the multiplication of travel;
- participation in general or ongoing formation meetings in one's home country, which should coincide with the vacation period to avoid excessive expenses;
- travel between countries for baptisms or ..
The examples could be multiplied, but what is at stake here is our vow of poverty, which invites us to a lifestyle "not too distant from the people we serve" (Const. 26.2), and the responsibility to manage the resources entrusted to us by Providence with moderation.
This letter provides an opportunity—at the beginning of a new community year—to reread together the sections of our "Vademecum" on "Travels Abroad" (SG 7.6-8) and "Vacations" (SG 7.9-14). We apologize for insisting on these values, but while we recognize that travel is easier and more affordable today than in the past, this does not exempt us from faithfully living what we promised on the day of our religious profession, especially in the areas of obedience and poverty.
Welcome these words with sincere affection and in a spirit of fraternal charity. They come from the heart and are intended to be a help, first and foremost to ourselves, to live according to the Confortian spirit.
