Riflessioni e Speranze del Superiore Generale
Carissimi,
abbiamo appena varcato la soglia del nuovo anno 2024. Il primo sentimento che pervade il mio cuore è la gratitudine a Dio per il prezioso dono della vita e della fede cristiana. Iniziamo un nuovo anno, con la speranza che sia ricco di entusiasmo, gioia, e con la determinazione di vivere pienamente, mettendo tutto ciò che siamo al servizio del progetto d'amore di Dio per la nostra umanità.
La pienezza della vita si manifesta quando smettiamo di pensare a noi stessi e ci apriamo completamente e incondizionatamente all'Altro. Mi fa riflettere molto la prima esigenza che Gesù chiede a coloro che desiderano seguirlo da vicino: "Se qualcuno vuol venire dietro a me, smetta di pensare a sé stesso, prenda la sua croce e mi segua" (Mc 8,34). Rinunciare a pensare a sé stessi significa smettere di considerarsi “il centro” di tutto. La priorità del discepolo deve coincidere con quella che ha guidato la vita di Gesù: il Regno di Dio. "Voi invece cercate prima il Regno di Dio e la sua giustizia, e tutte queste cose vi saranno date in aggiunta" (Mt 6,33).
Il 2023, appena conclusosi, resterà impresso nella nostra mente per la celebrazione del XVIII Capitolo Generale, il cui tema è stato: "Amare la nostra vocazione saveriana". La domanda che ci siamo posti – e che continuiamo a porci - riguarda il nostro futuro come Famiglia saveriana: "Dove stiamo andando?". Benché conosciamo le nostre radici e la nostra storia, il futuro rimane ancora “un enigma”. Con fede cristiana, nonostante i dubbi e le incertezze, confidiamo che il Signore cammini davanti a noi e che lo Spirito di Dio ci stia indicando la strada da percorrere.
La vocazione saveriana si innesta nel tronco della vocazione missionaria della Chiesa (cfr. Mt 28,18-20). L'annuncio del Vangelo a coloro che ancora non conoscono Gesù costituisce l'essenza della nostra vocazione saveriana e la nostra particolare identità nella Chiesa. Da qui deriva che tutto ciò che facciamo deve avere questo specifico orientamento: che Gesù Cristo sia conosciuto ed amato da chi ancora non lo conosce e non lo ama. Domandiamoci sinceramente: questa nostra identità saveriana è chiara in ciascuno di noi? Si riflette nelle nostre azioni quotidiane? Più concretamente: ciò che stiamo facendo ora e pianifichiamo per il futuro è perché Gesù Cristo sia conosciuto ed amato?
La bellezza della vocazione missionaria nella Chiesa risiede nella consapevolezza che, grazie ad essa, ognuno di noi può affermare di aver conosciuto Gesù e di essere cristiano. Se siamo missionari è perché abbiamo compreso questa profonda verità: il mondo ha bisogno del Vangelo; l'umanità deve udire che Dio è nostro Padre/Madre, che siamo tutti fratelli e sorelle. Quindi, uomini e donne del nostro mondo, con le loro diversità e ricchezze storiche, culturali e religiose, costituiamo la grande Famiglia dei figli/e di Dio.
Durante le visite che effettuiamo nei luoghi in cui vivete e testimoniate l'amore di Dio, di solito incontriamo persone concrete che hanno accolto il Vangelo di Gesù Cristo grazie alla vostra mediazione e presenza. È commovente ascoltare dalle labbra di persone così diverse, da un continente all'altro queste parole: grazie per la vostra vita missionaria; grazie per averci portato Gesù Cristo. Quei volti gioiosi, sorridenti, che emanano pace e speranza dovrebbero trovar posto sul nostro comodino. Sono loro che ci ricordano che "La messe è molta e gli operai sono pochi. Pregate dunque il Padrone della messe che mandi operai nella sua messe" (Mt 9,37-38).
Carissimi, accogliamo il nuovo anno 2024 come un dono prezioso dal Signore. Continuiamo il nostro cammino, passo dopo passo, sfruttando ogni istante e accogliendo tutte le opportunità per far conoscere ed amare Gesù Cristo.
Rendiamo altrettanto gradevole la nostra convivenza fraterna.

Reflections and Hopes of the Superior General
Dear confreres,
we have just stepped across the threshold of the new year 2024. The first feeling that pervades my heart is that of gratitude to God for the precious gift of life and the Christian faith. We start a new year hoping that it may be rich in enthusiasm, joy, and characterised by the determination to live our life to the full by placing all that we are at the service of God’s project of love for our humanity.
The fullness of life is manifested when we stop thinking about ourselves and open ourselves completely and unconditionally to the Other. Jesus’ first requirement for those who wish to follow him closely makes me think a lot: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Mk 8:34). Giving up thinking about yourself means stopping considering yourself "the centre" of all. A disciple’s priority must coincide with that which guided the life of Jesus: the Reign of God. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.” (Mt 6: 33).
The year 2023 that has just ended will remain impressed in our mind for the celebration of the XVIII General Chapter, whose theme was: “Loving our Xaverian vocation.” The question we asked ourselves – and which we continue asking – is about our future as Xaverian Family: “Where are we going?” Although we know our roots and history, our future remains “an enigma.” Despite doubts and uncertainties, with Christian faith we are confident that the Lord is walking before us and that God’s Spirit is showing us the way forward.
The Xaverian vocation is grafted onto the trunk of the Church’s missionary vocation (see Mt 28: 18-20). Proclaiming the Gospel to those who still do not know Jesus constitutes the essence of our Xaverian vocation and our particular identity within the Church. Consequently, everything we do must have this specific orientation: letting Jesus Christ be known and loved by those who do not yet know him and do not love him. Let us question ourselves honestly: is this Xaverian identity clear to each one of us? Is it reflected in our daily actions? Or more concretely: Is what we are doing now and what we plan for the future meant to let Jesus Christ be known and loved?
The beauty of missionary vocation in the Church rests upon the awareness that, thanks to it, every one of us can affirm to have known Jesus and to be Christian. We are missionaries because we have understood this profound truth: the world needs the Gospel; humanity must hear that God is our Father/Mother, that we are all brothers and sisters. Hence, the men and women of our world, with their diversities and historical, cultural and religious richness, constitute the great Family of God’s children.
In the course of our visits to the places where you live and bear witness to God's love, we usually meet concrete people that have received the Gospel of Jesus Christ through your mediation and presence. “Thank you for your missionary life; Thank you for bringing Jesus Christ to us”: hearing these words on the lips of so different people from one continent to another is moving. Their joyful and smiling faces that emanate peace and hope should find a place on our bedside table. They are the ones who remind us that “The harvest is abundant but the labourers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out labourers for his harvest” (Mt 9:37-38).
Dear confreres, let us welcome the new year 2024 as a precious gift from the Lord. Let us continue our journey, step after step, making the most out of each instant and welcoming all opportunities to let Jesus Christ be known and loved.
And let us make our fraternal life together equally enjoyable.
