(Tavernerio, Italia, Gabriele Ferrari sx)

60TH ANNIVERSARY OF ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD: “Sixty years of life and missionary life”
Sixty years of life and missionary life. This is easily said, but many things happened throughout these sixty years! How many the graces I received! How many the worlds I have travelled! How many the people I met and how many have already passed on the other side, while I am still here! Whom and what am I still waiting for? Life events really changed me… however, if I close my eyes, I have the impression of still being a newly ordained priest at the gate of the Cathedral in Trento, walking out from the ordination on June 28th, 1964, when my mother hugged me and told me: “Now I believe that you have become a priest.” She had always been afraid that I might make a mistake, and that mine might just be a “foolhardy decision.” My ordination to the priesthood coincided with the decision to leave the Diocese of Trento and go to the mission. Once again, one month before my departure, my mother suffered a heart attack; on the following morning, after seeing me, she told me: “I am happy I didn’t die last night, because people might have said that I died out of sorrow for my son’s departure. Instead, do not hesitate, go! I am happy that you can leave for the mission…” Her blessing, together with that of my weeping father, has brought me to this day when I feel renewed in me the joy of having followed God’s call and of having lived this life that I now feel has already been long, rich in experience and love received and given, in the service of my brothers and sisters.
