Era sabato 5 aprile 2025. Mentre stavamo preparandoci per la catechesi (la Pasqua è prossima e si devono dare gli ultimi ritocchi per i battesimi della Veglia) scatta l'allarme : il fiume sta uscendo dagli argini. Pensando che, come lo scorso anno, l'acqua in casa avrebbe raggiunto i 60 cm, abbiamo cercato di alzare tutto il sollevabile, ma i nostri sforzi non sono bastati perché l'acqua è arrivata a quasi due metri. Ci rifugiamo al primo piano con una famiglia e due coniugi anziani.

Domenica 6 aprile 2025 celebriamo nella nostra cappella e, lunedì 7 aprile 2025 con il calare del livello dell'acqua, iniziamo l'immane lavoro di pulizia della Chiesa e della casa. Ovunque la piena si è divertita a buttare tutti i mobili per terra. Ovunque fango brutto e nauseante. Un disastro.

Mercoledì 9 aprile 2025 abbiamo finito il grosso della pulizia della chiesa in vista di porter celebrare la Domenica delle Palme (13 aprile 2025). Abbiamo anche la gradita sorpresa della visita del cardinale di Kinshasa.

Purtroppo, venerdì 11 aprile 2025, abbiamo una nuova inondazione, meno forte ma ugualmente disastrosa e soprattutto negativa per il morale. Tutti quelli che possono lasciano il quartiere.

A questi punto non ci resta che spostare tutte le celebrazioni pasquali nella sede della Teologia dove da anni funziona una cappella domenicale. Lo spazio attorno si presta e così con l'aiuto dei confratelli padri e studenti e dei vari gruppi della parrocchia riusciamo a preparare uno spazio bello e ben ordinato. E a questo punto interviene l'innato senso della celebrazione e della festa del cuore africano per cui tutte le celebrazioni sono ben cantate e celebrate. I battesimi li abbiamo rinviati a quando sarà possibile prepararli bene e fare anche un po' di festa.

Il tempo ci ha aiutato e solo alla sera di Pasqua è scoppiato un temporale che ha rinnovato la paura. Il messaggio che abbiamo cercato di comunicare e condividere: “Cristo è Risorto”. Con l'aiuto di tutti cerchiamo di far risorgere presto il nostro quartiere e la parrocchia.

Lunedì di Pasqua 21 aprile 2025 e martedì 22 aprile 2025, grandi lavori sono stati fatti per poter domani, mercoledì 23 aprile 2025, riaprire la scuola. (Rino Benzoni sx e Arcade Irakiza sx)

It was Saturday, April 5, 2025. While we were getting ready for catechism (Easter is near, and we needed to put the finishing touches on the Easter Vigil baptisms), the alarm went off: the river was overflowing its banks. Thinking that, like last year, the water in the house would reach 60 cm (about 2 feet), we tried to raise everything we could, but our efforts weren't enough because the water rose to nearly two meters (over 6 feet). We took shelter on the second floor with one family and an elderly couple.

On Sunday, April 6, 2025, we celebrated Mass in our chapel, and on Monday, April 7, 2025, as the water levels began to recede, we started the massive task of cleaning the church and the house. The flood had knocked over all the furniture. There was foul-smelling and filthy mud everywhere. It was a disaster.

By Wednesday, April 9, 2025, we had completed most of the cleaning in the church in preparation for Palm Sunday (April 13, 2025). We were also pleasantly surprised by a visit from the Cardinal of Kinshasa.

Unfortunately, on Friday, April 11, 2025, the flood struck again, less severe but equally disastrous and harmful to morale. Everyone who can, leaves the neighbourhood.

We had no choice but to move all the Easter celebrations to the Theology House, where a Sunday chapel has been functioning for years. The surrounding space lends itself, and with help from our confreres priests, students, and various parish groups, we prepared a beautiful and welcoming space. Then, the African heart's natural sense of celebration and festivity came through—every celebration was well sung and celebrated. We postponed the baptisms to a later date when we could adequately prepare and celebrate them.

The weather cooperated, and a thunderstorm struck only on Easter Eve, rekindling our fears. The message we tried to share and live: "Christ is Risen." With everyone's help, we hope to see our neighbourhood and parish rise again soon.
