Qui a Bukavu tutto è calmo, anche se la gente risente degli effetti della guerra in corso: alta disoccupazione, prezzi che crescono, e commercio interno al paese reso pericoloso da numerosi posti di blocco creati da vari gruppi armati. Comunque, la popolazione dimostra grande resilienza. Camminando in città, si incontrano persone di tutti i tipi: commercianti di ogni genere, kadafi (venditori di carburante imbottigliato), officine all’aperto di meccanici, officine di falegnami…

Molti giovani trovano lavoro nei numerosi cantieri. Alcuni hanno detto che se la Chiesa Cattolica non provvedesse all’educazione elementare e alle cure mediche, la situazione del paese sarebbe ancora più drammatica.

La nostra comunità della Filosofia a Vamaro, che è composta da quattro padri e 27 studenti, sta completando l’anno accademico senza particolari difficoltà a parte possibili eventi imprevisti. Il rettore della PIB (Isidore Bakanja Philosophy College), p. Barthélemy Kabwana Minani, è rimasto bloccato a Kinshasa dove attende il rinnovo dei suoi documenti, ma non è certo se sarà capace di ritornare per la fine dell’anno accademico. Il rettore della comunità, p. Valentin Shukuru Bihaira, ha aspettato da mesi il rinnovo del passaporto. Finalmente, è riuscito ad ottenere un visto per l’Italia e, Dio volendo, partirà presto per l’Italia dove parteciperà al Convegno sul Volto Umano del Saveriano.

Siamo rimasti solo noi due, p. Gilbert Kahasha Mubalama ed io. I nostri studenti hanno iniziato il loro corso intensivo (il “blocus”) in preparazione agli esami che cominciano questa settimana.

Stiamo costruendo la nuova ala della casa della Filosofia perché, Dio volendo, il prossimo anno avremo più di 40 studenti. Il lavoro rallenta a causa della mancanza di fondi. Il cantiere, che dà impiego a molta gente, rappresenta il nostro piccolo contributo alla lotta contro la povertà.

Ieri, abbiamo celebrato la Solennità del Corpus Christi con la solita partecipazione numerosa, gioiosa e devota di fedeli. Le parrocchie della città hanno celebrato la prima comunione di centinaia di bambini.

I fedeli partecipano alla Messa domenicale e feriale in grande numero, come anche all’adorazione eucaristica. Durante la settimana, dopo la Messa, essi sono presenti alla benedizione dell’acqua, del sale, del rosario e delle immagini sacre, e di venerdì a quella delle mamme incinte e dei malati. Seguono poi le confessioni che a volte possono impegnare per ore. Questi sono i mezzi potenti di santificazione che costruiscono la comunione, offrono il perdono, la riconciliazione e la salute interiore. (Gabriele Cimarelli s.x.)

Here in Bukavu, everything is calm, even though people are feeling the effects of the ongoing war: high unemployment, rising prices, and trade within the country made dangerous by the numerous checkpoints set up by various armed groups. However, people are showing great resilience. Walking through the city, you meet all sorts of people: traders of every kind, ‘kadafi’ (sellers of bottled fuel), open-air mechanics’ workshops, carpenters’ workshops… 

Many young people find work on the numerous construction sites. Some have said that if the Catholic Church did not provide basic education and medical care, the country’s situation would be even more dire.

Our Vamaro Philosophy community, comprising four priests and 27 students, is ending the academic year without major difficulties, apart from the inevitable unforeseen events. Fr Barthélemy Kabwana Minani rector of the PIB (Isidore Bakanja Philosophy College), is stuck in Kinshasa waiting for his documents to be renewed, and it is not known whether he will be able to return for the end of the academic year. The rector of the Community, Fr. Valentin Shukuru Bihaira has been waiting for months to renew his passport. He has finally obtained a visa for Italy and, God willing, will soon be leaving for Italy to take part in the Congress on the Human Face of the Xaverian.

There are just the two of us, Fr Gilbert Kahasha Mubalama and I. Our students have started their ‘cram session’ (le 'blocus'), a period of intensive study in preparation for the exams which begin this week.

We are building the new wing of the Philosophy house because, God willing, next year we will have more than 40 students. Work is slowing down due to a lack of funds. Our building site, which provides work for many people, is our small contribution to the fight against poverty.

Yesterday, we celebrated the Solemnity of Corpus Christi with the usual large, joyful and devout turnout of the faithful. The parishes in the city celebrated the First Communion of hundreds of children.

The faithful attend Sunday and weekday Eucharist in large numbers, as well as eucharistic adoration. During the week, after Mass, they attend the blessings (baraka) of water, salt, the rosary and sacred images, and on Fridays, those for expectant mothers and the sick. This is followed by confession, which can sometimes take an hour. These are the powerful means of sanctification that build communion, offer forgiveness, reconciliation and inner healing.
