Come caratteristica attività in quanto “Casa di Preghiera”, Shinmeizan ha organizzato, a partire dal 1996 un ritiro mensile, aperto a tutti, anche a non Cristiani. Il ritiro inizia alle ore 10 del mattino con la proposta di un tema per la meditazione, seguita da un tempo di silenzio per la meditazione personale. Il pasto in comune è pure preso insieme, in silenzio. Nel primo pomeriggio ci si riunisce per un’ora di preghiera fatta insieme, a partire dal tema proposto per la meditazione nella mattinata, seguita da una mezz’ora di preghiera personale. Ci si ritrova poi tutti ancora per il tradizionale “cha” 茶 (tè giapponese).

Tradizionalmente questo ritiro mensile ha luogo il secondo giovedì di ogni mese. Lo scorso mese di maggio, è stato il 299mo ritiro, ed è stato caratterizzato dalla Iniziazione Cristiana di uno dei partecipanti, che, dopo aver frequentato per alcuni anni questi incontri mensili, ha chiesto il battesimo. Il secondo giovedì di giugno, il 12 giugno, è stato il 300mo ritiro! Ed anche questa volta il membro di un gruppo venuto parecchie volte da Tokyo, per ritiri di tre giorni a Shinmeizan, ha chiesto di essere battezzato qui, in questa occasione!

Come Centro di Dialogo Interreligioso, la piccola Comunità di Shinmeizan è stata coinvolta, la Domenica 8 giugno 2025, nella visita alla Moschea e annesso Centro Islamico di Kumamoto, conducendo il locale gruppo per il dialogo interreligioso, fondato (nel 1990) e guidato da Shinmeizan, giunto in questa occasione alla sua 103ma attività di incontri interreligiosi nella zona. Durante l’incontro, secondo un solito programma, dopo la presentazione da parte del locale Imam dell’insegnamento dell’Islam e delle attività della locale comunità islamica, quasi interamente composta da immigrati molti dei quali studiano o insegnano all’Università di Kumamoto, la Sorella Saveriana Maria De Giorgi di Shinmeizan ha esposto e illustrato, anche attraverso un Power Point, la dichiarazione di Abu Dhabi sulla fraternità umana, firmata da Papa Francesco e dal grande Iman Ahmad Muhammad al-Tayyeb dell’Università di Al Azhar del Cairo, il 4 febbraio 2019. Ha fatto seguito uno scambio di domande vicendevoli da parte dei partecipanti, in un clima di grande cordialità. 

Il giorno 9 giugno 2025, su invito del Capo del tempio Buddhista Choen-ji di Kumamoto, ancora tutta la piccola comunità di Shinmeizan ha partecipato alla solenne cerimonia di inaugurazione del tempio ricostruito dopo il forte terremoto del 2016. Il Capo del tempio, e un altro membro della stessa Scuola buddhista Nichiren, tra le più importanti del Buddhismo giapponese, parteciperanno, con la sorella Saveriana Maria De Giorgi in rappresentanza di Shinmeizan, all’incontro internazionale “Uomini e Religioni”, organizzato dalla Comunità di S. Egidio, che si terrà a Roma il prossimo 26-28 ottobre.

Entrambi questi due monaci buddhisti, amici e stretti partners di dialogo, saranno ospiti di Shinmeizan nei giorni 16 e 17 giugno prossimi. (Franco Sottocornla sx)

An activity typical of Shinmeizan as a "House of Prayer" is a monthly retreat open to all, including non-Christians, that has been organised since 1996. The retreat begins at 10:00 a.m. with a meditation on a specific theme, followed by time of silence for personal reflection. The meal together is also eaten in silence. In the early afternoon, everyone gathers for an hour of prayer together based on the theme proposed for the morning meditation, then half an hour of personal prayer follows. We then all meet again for the traditional cha 茶 (Japanese tea).

Traditionally, this monthly retreat takes place on the second Thursday of each month. The one held last May was the 299^th retreat and was marked by the Christian Initiation of one of the participants, who, after attending these monthly meetings for several years, asked to be baptised. The second Thursday in the month of June (June 12^th), was the 300th retreat! This time too, a member of a group who had come several times from Tokyo for the three-day retreats at Shinmeizan asked to be baptised here, on this occasion!

On Sunday, June 8^th, 2025, as Centre for Interreligious Dialogue, the small community of Shinmeizan took part in a visit to the Mosque and adjoining Islamic Centre in Kumamoto, leading the local group of Interreligious Dialogue which was founded (in 1990) and is directed by Shinmeizan, and which on this occasion carried out its 103^rd activity of interreligious meetings in the area.

Following the usual programme, during the meeting the local Imam made a presentation on the teaching of Islam and the activities of the local Islamic community, which is almost entirely made up of immigrants, many of whom study or teach at Kumamoto University. Afterwards, Xaverian Sister Maria De Giorgi of Shinmeizan illustrated, also with the aid of a Power Point, the Abu Dhabi Declaration on Human Fraternity signed by Pope Francis and the great Imam Ahmad Muhammad al-Tayyeb of Al Azhar University in Cairo, on February 4^th, 2019. This was followed by an exchange of questions from the participants, in an atmosphere of great cordiality.

On 9 June 2025, at the invitation of the Head of the Choen-ji Buddhist Temple in Kumamoto, the entire small community of Shinmeizan again took part in the solemn inauguration ceremony of the temple rebuilt after the severe earthquake of 2016. The head of this temple and another member of the same Nichiren Buddhist School, one of the most important schools in Japanese Buddhism, along with Xaverian Sister Maria De Giorgi representing Shinmeizan, will participate in the upcoming international meeting Men and Religions organised by the Community of St. Egidio, which is going to be held in Rome on October 26^th-28^th.

These two Buddhist monks, who are friends and close dialogue partners, will be guests of Shinmeizan from June 16^th to 17^th. (Franco Sottocornola s.x.)
