Shinmeizan compie 38 anni! Di questi quasi quattro decenni, gli anni vissuti da me in questo centro saveriano sono quasi nove — dapprima dal 1993 al 1998, e ora dal 2022 come direttore. Nello scorrere del tempo (c’è stato un intervallo di 25 anni tra la prima e l’attuale mia presenza), ho potuto vedere quanto questo luogo sia diventato sempre più, per tante persone, un punto di riferimento. C’è chi viene per un tempo di silenzio, chi per un ritiro, chi per un incontro tra religioni diverse. Alcuni tornano ogni mese, altri arrivano da lontano per la prima volta. In mezzo a tutto questo, Shinmeizan continua a offrire una comunità accogliente e uno spazio semplice, dove si può pregare, ascoltare, condividere. Per me, Saveriano, questo centro e questa comunità — in questa terra giapponese — sono una presenza che mi ricorda che il Vangelo si può testimoniare anche nelle periferie più silenziose e meno visibili. Per la Chiesa del Giappone è un piccolo segno, riconosciuto, cercato e frequentato, di apertura e fiducia. Per il dialogo interreligioso è un laboratorio quotidiano, fatto di volti, parole, gesti semplici, e di collaborazioni che superano confini geografici e culturali. A distanza di 38 anni, più che guardare indietro, mi sembra importante custodire e valorizzare ciò che è e quanto ancora sta avvenendo oggi; e insieme sognare modi nuovi per continuare a essere un “segno” evangelico-missionario in questa terra. Shinmeizan celebrates 38 years of life. Almost four decades, of which I am also part having spent in this Xaverian centre approximately nine years – first from 1993 to 1998, and now as its director since 2022. Over time (there has been a 25-year gap between my first presence at the centre and my current one), I have seen how this place has increasingly become a point of reference for many people. They come to spend a time of silence, or for a retreat, or a meeting between different religions. Some return every month, others come from far away for the first time. Within this variety of experiences, Shinmeizan keeps being a welcoming community and a simple space where one can pray, listen, share. As a Xaverian, this centre and this community – in this portion of Japanese land – are a presence that reminds me of the fact that one can bear witness to the Gospel even in the most silent and less visible peripheries. For the Japanese Church, this is a little sign of opening and trust – a little sign but recognised, sought after and frequently visited. For interreligious dialogue, Shinmeizan is a daily laboratory made up of faces, words, simple gestures and cooperation that go beyond geographical and cultural boundaries. After 38 years, rather than looking back at the past, I believe it is important to safeguard and value what this centre is and what keeps happening in it. I believe it is important to dream of new ways to continue being a  missionary “sign” of the Gospel in this land. Always with courage, gratitude and trust in God’s Providence.
