Prosegue la serie di catechesi dedicata alla passione per l’annuncio del Vangelo guardando alle Americhe. L’annuncio fatto nella lingua madre e la testimonianza del messicano san Juan Diego, messaggero della Vergine di Guadalupe, sono gli esempi proposti durante l’udienza generale di mercoledì 23 agosto 2023:

“…il Vangelo vi era giunto già prima di quelle apparizioni, ma purtroppo era stato accompagnato anche da interessi mondani. Anziché la via dell’inculturazione era stata percorsa troppo spesso quella sbrigativa di trapiantare e imporre modelli precostituiti, mancando di rispetto verso le popolazioni indigene. La Vergine di Guadalupe, invece, appare vestita con gli abiti degli autoctoni, parla la loro lingua, accoglie e ama la cultura del luogo: Maria è Madre e sotto il suo manto trova posto ogni figlio. In Lei, Dio si è fatto carne e, tramite Maria, continua a incarnarsi nella vita dei popoli. La Madonna, infatti, annuncia Dio nella lingua più adatta, cioè la lingua materna. E anche a noi la Madonna parla in lingua materna, quella che noi capiamo bene. Il Vangelo si trasmette nella lingua materna…”

Pope Francis’ series of catechesis on the passion for the proclamation of the Gospel continues with a look at the Americas. The proclamation of the Gospel in the mother tongue and the life witness of Mexican St Juan Diego, messenger of the Virgin of Guadalupe, are the examples mentioned during the general audience of Wednesday, August 23^rd, 2023:

“…the Gospel had already reached there prior to those apparitions, but unfortunately it had also been accompanied by worldly interests. Instead of the path of inculturation, too often the hasty approach of transplanting and imposing pre-constituted models — European, for instance — had been taken, lacking respect for the Indigenous peoples. The Virgin of Guadalupe, on the other hand, appears dressed in the clothing of the Indigenous peoples, she speaks their language, she welcomes and loves the local culture: Mary is Mother, and under her mantle every child finds a place. In her, God became flesh, and through Mary, He continues to incarnate Himself in the lives of peoples. Our Lady, in fact, proclaims God in the most suitable language; that is, the mother tongue. And Our Lady also speaks to us in the mother tongue, the language we understand well. The Gospel is transmitted through the mother tongue…”
