MISSIONARY INITIATIVES: “Paintings resembling stained-glass windows in the exhibition on St Francis of Assisi in Japan”.

I was born near the town of Metz, where Pope Leo XIV recently spoke of Europe’s Christian roots and the need for dialogue to achieve world peace. Metz Cathedral is famous for being one of the most renowned French-style Gothic cathedrals and, above all, for its 6,500 square metres of Gothic-style stained-glass windows. And it really did seem to me as though I were looking at stained-glass windows on display, as I contemplated the paintings on canvas depicting the life of St Francis of Assisi at the Kumamoto Museum of Fine Arts in Japan. The exhibition was organised by Mr and Mrs Morita, both Catholic artists from the tiny parish of Yamaga. It is the story of St Francis of Assisi and St Clare, depicted in vivid, luminous colors, presented to the Japanese public. I spent about two hours admiring the paintings on display, and I must say that the number of visitors surprised me. In a non-Christian world that barely knows the name of Jesus, organising an exhibition solely on St Francis of Assisi, in the hope that someone might come to see it, is undoubtedly an act of courage bordering on recklessness. Yet, judging by the number of people who appreciated the paintings, read the captions and asked the artists questions… I believe that presenting the tenets of our faith – embodied in the life of a saint – through art was a highly successful initiative. I also felt that these paintings are actually worth far more than my homilies and explanations of faith that I give regularly every day. After all, even in Europe, many generations of Christians have been brought up on paintings depicting biblical scenes and scenes from the life of Jesus himself, along with many paintings depicting the lives of the saints.

It is wonderful to see that the same thing is happening in Japan too, thanks to local artists who were baptized about ten years ago through the ministry of a Xaverian missionary. As a missionary, the painting I observed most closely and which attracted me the most was the one depicting St Francis of Assisi evangelizing ‘the Moors’, as Muslims were called at the time. It is worth noting that Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the most revered and beloved saints among Japanese Christians. (Fr. Silvano Da Roit sx).
