Nel numero di maggio -giugno 2021, la nostra rivista Missione Oggi, ospita un articolo del giornalista Stefano Vecchia sui 500 anni di evangelizzazione nelle Filippine. In un interessante riquadro contenente l’anticipazione dell’argomento, con profonda saggezza e visione missionaria il giornalista scrive:

Motto dell’anno del cinquecentenario è Missio ad gentes, a segnalare che quella nata con lo sbarco di Ferdinando Magellano sulla costa di Cebu, è l’epopea di una Chiesa che, straniera in origine, ha saputo definire la fisionomia di un’intera nazione asiatica e farne una comunità missionaria, con un ruolo importante affidato alla numerosa comunità dei migranti.

Un aspetto sottolineato anche dai vescovi filippini, che nel messaggio fatto pervenire nell’occasione al Santo Padre affermano: “Le porgiamo l’amore filiale dei filippini nelle 7.641 isole del nostro paese. Ci sono più di 10 milioni di filippini emigrati in quasi 100 paesi del mondo. Questa mattina si uniscono a noi”. I più vicini, sicuramente, a un evento che nell’arcipelago ha suscitato un forte orgoglio, sono i 168mila cittadini dell’arcipelago che risiedono e lavorano nel nostro paese, la comunità più numerosa dell’Europa occidentale. A loro e ai compatrioti sparsi per il mondo, il papa si è rivolto definendoli “contrabbandieri della fede”, anche per segnalare le difficoltà e a volte i rischi a cui si espongono per cercare di mantenere la propria identità religiosa e le caratteristiche culturali, morali ed etiche che ne derivano. Il messaggio ha anche espresso la riconoscenza del papa per il ruolo di diffusori della fede dei migranti e delle loro famiglie in Italia. “Voglio ringraziarvi – ha detto Francesco – per la gioia che portate in tutto il mondo e nelle nostre comunità cristiane. Penso alle tante, belle esperienze tra le famiglie qui a Roma, ma anche nel mondo dove la vostra presenza discreta e laboriosa si fa testimonianza di fede”.

The May-June 2021 Issue of our Magazine, ‘Missione Oggi’, hosts an article by journalist Mr. Stefano Vecchia on 500 years of evangelization in the Philippines. In an interesting box containing an anticipation of the whole article, the journalist writes with deep wisdom and missionary vision: 

Motto of the 500-Year anniversary is Missio ad Gentes. It signals that, what was born out of the landing of Ferdinand Magellan on the coast of Cebu, is the epic of a Church that, originally foreign, has then been able to define the main traits of an entire Asian nation and make it a missionary community, with an important role entrusted to her large migrant community.           

This aspect was also emphasized by the Filipino Bishops, who affirm in the message sent to the Holy Father: “We offer you the filial love of the Filipinos, who are living in the 7,641 islands of our country. There are more than 10 million Filipinos that have emigrated  to nearly 100 countries around the world. They join us this morning.” Surely, the closest to this event, which has aroused great pride in the archipelago, are the 168 thousand citizens of the archipelago that reside and work  in our country [Italy – e.n.], the largest community in Western Europe. The Pope has addressed them and their compatriots around the world by defining them as ‘smugglers of the faith’ – an expression that underscores the difficulties and the risks they sometimes expose themselves to, as they strive to maintain their religious identity and the cultural, moral and ethical characteristics that derive from it. In his message the Pope also expressed gratitude for the role of these spreaders of the faith: migrants and their families in Italy. “I want to thank you – Pope Francis said – for the joy you bring throughout the world and in our Christian communities. I am thinking of the many beautiful experiences among families here in Rome, but also in the world, where your discreet and laborious presence is a witness of faith”.
