«La Suprema Autorità della Chiesa, come ben vi è noto, ha approvato definitivamente le Costituzioni della Pia nostra Società, in data del 6 gennaio u.s., ed io ora ve le trasmetto novellamente ristampate con quelle lievi modificazioni che vi furono introdotte dalle Sacre Congregazioni Romane» (San Guido M. Conforti, Lettera Testamento 1).

1. Con queste parole Mons. Conforti, dalla nostra Casa Madre, iniziava a scrivere la quinta Lettera Circolare inviata «ai carissimi Missionari presenti e futuri della Pia Società di San Francesco Saverio per le Missioni Estere». Lo scopo di questa lettera era quello di comunicare l’approvazione definitiva delle nostre prime Costituzioni da parte del dicastero romano. In essa invitava, anzitutto «a ringraziare il Signore», e allo stesso tempo richiamava l’attenzione «sopra l’impegno grave e solenne che noi veniamo ora a contrarre per esso dinanzi a Dio ed alla sua Chiesa» (LT 1). Era il 2 luglio 1921.

Nella programmazione della Direzione Generale (DG) per il sessennio 2017-2023, nel punto 2.2 che concerne il documento del XVII Capitolo Generale sull’Identità Carismatica, abbiamo scritto: «Seguendo lo spirito di questo documento sull’Identità saveriana, pensiamo di dare un rilievo particolare al primo centenario delle prime Costituzioni e della Lettera Testamento, che coincide anche con il 125º anniversario della fondazione dell’Istituto, dedicandogli un anno completo, un anno giubilare, dal luglio 2020 al luglio 2021» (I Quaderni de iSaveriani 102, p.10).

2. La presente lettera, che pubblichiamo esattamente cento anni dopo la Lettera Testamento (LT) di Mons. Conforti, è stata preparata per aiutarci a vivere intensamente quest’anno giubilare come Famiglia. Soprattutto, vogliamo ricordare e sottolineare alcuni principi essenziali della vita saveriana che devono dare contenuto e orientare ciò che si è programmato o si programmerà per sostenere e dare nuovo impulso al nostro servizio missionario ad gentes, a livello personale, di comunità locale, di Circoscrizione e a livello generale.

La lettera ha come titolo una frase scritta da Mons. Conforti all’inizio della LT: «Ognuno di noi sia quindi intimamente persuaso che la vocazione, alla quale siamo stati chiamati, non potrebbe essere più nobile e grande…» (LT 1). Partiamo dalla constatazione di un grande fatto: siamo depositari di un dono meraviglioso, messo gratuitamente dal Signore nel nostro cuore e nelle nostre mani. Dono che ci è dato perché sia fatto fruttificare e dia il centuplo di ciò che abbiamo ricevuto. Da parte nostra, quindi, ci vuole grande impegno e responsabilità.

The vocation to which we have been called could not be greater or more noble

As you know, on 6 January this year, the Supreme authority of the Church gave its final approval to our Society’s Constitutions. I am now sending you the updated version with the minor modifications introduced by the Sacred Congregations in Rome (San Guido M. Conforti, Testament Letter 1).

• These were the words with which Mons. Conforti began to write, from our Mother House, his fifth Circular Letter “to all the missionaries, present and future, of the Saint Francis Xavier Foreign Mission Society.” The purpose of this letter was to communicate the final approval of our first Constitutions by the Roman Congregation. In it he invited, first of all to “thank the Lord” and at the same time he drew the attention “to the serious and solemn commitment we undertake in the eyes of God and the Church” (LT 1). It was July 2, 1921.

In the planning of the General Direction (GD) for the years 2017-2023, in paragraph 2.2 concerning the document of the XVII General Chapter on Charismatic Identity, we wrote: “Following the spirit of this document on our Xaverian identity, we plan to give a special emphasis to the first centenary of the first Constitutions and the Testament Letter, which also coincides with the 125th anniversary of the Institute’s foundation, by organizing a Jubilee Year dedicated to them, from July 2020 until July 2021” (I Quaderni de iSaveriani 102, p.28).

• This letter, which we publish exactly one hundred years after the Testament Letter (TL) of Mons. Conforti, has been prepared to help us live intensely, as a Family, this Jubilee year. We want to remind and emphasize, above all, some essential principles of Xaverian life that must give content and guide what has been planned or will be planned to support and revitalize our missionary service ad gentes, on a personal level, in the local community, in the circumscription and at the general level.

The letter is titled after a sentence written by Mons. Conforti at the beginning of the TL: “Every one of us should be intimately persuaded that the vocation to which we have been called could not be greater or more noble…” (TL 1). Let us start from the realization of a great fact: we are custodians of a wonderful gift, put freely in our hearts and hands by the Lord. A gift that is given to us so that it may bear fruit and give a hundred times more than what we had received. For our part, therefore, this requires great commitment and responsibility.
