Il 5 ottobre 2009, verso le 11,00 ora locale, mentre viaggiava da Khulna a Dhaka, a Savar (30 Km circa da Dhaka) P. Giovanni Abbiati è stato coinvolto in un grave incidente stradale. Portato all'ospedale di Savar, è deceduto poco dopo l'arrivo.
Aveva 61 anni, essendo nato a Chiuro (Sondrio) il 30.4.1948.
Cresciuto in una famiglia numerosa (9 fratelli) e profondamente cristiana (entrambi i genitori furono Delegati dell'Azione Cattolica nei rispettivi rami), fu per tre anni allievo del Seminario di Como (Ginnasio e Ia Liceo). Giusto il tempo per scoprire che la sua strada era un'altra. «Nell'anno di Va ginnasio mi accorsi che pensavo alle missioni e ai missionari, e che c'era in me il desiderio di darmi più generosamente al Signore. Non so come, nè in quale circostanza accadde, ma so che mi trovai convinto che anch'io dovevo fare il missionario» (7.9.65).
Entrò tra i Saveriani, nel Noviziato di Nizza Monferrato, il 2 ottobre 1965. L'anno successivo emise la Prima Professione. Completò quindi gli studi liceali a Tavernerio (66-68). Passò poi a Parma per il biennio filosofico (68-70); fece l'anno di prefettato a Brescia (70-71); ritornò infine a Parma per la Teologia (71-74) e l'ordinazione presbiterale (30.9.73).
Nella domanda di ammissione alla Professione Perpetua (25.10.72) accenna al cammino fatto nel periodo della formazione: «Questi anni mi hanno reso cosciente di quanto sia umano e limitato il dono che io faccio a Dio. Tuttavia desidero ancor più consacrare per sempre la mia vita a Lui. Chiedo a Dio di accrescere in me la Fede, la Speranza e la Carità …».
La sua prima – o meglio, unica – destinazione fu il Bangladesh. Di fatto, tranne i due anni di avvicendamento a Cremona (83-85) e l'anno di aggiornamento a Roma (03-04), P. Giovanni visse tutto il resto della sua vita in Bangladesh.
All'inizio, 1975, dovette dedicarsi allo studio della lingua. La cosa non lo entusiasmava: «ho fatto una gran fatica … stavo lì a studiare il bengalese, mangiare e dormire, mentre la gente attorno a te non mangia e non ha una casa dove stare … La nostra missione è testimoniare la carità, la povertà, l'accoglienza …» (Missionari Saveriani, sett. 99).
Vari sono stati gli impegni affidati al P. Giovanni nei lunghi anni di Bangladesh: viceparroco e poi parroco a Shimulia, Bhabarpara (76-83), Khulna S. Maria (87-93), Economo e Consigliere Regionale, Incaricato di Giustizia e Pace (dal 1995). E, soprattutto, coordinatore dei locali Gruppi di Artigianato che organizzano il lavoro di diverse migliaia di donne.
Lo si è toccato con mano al suo funerale, imponente e impressionante: davanti alla sua bara hanno sfilato «tante donne con le lacrime agli occhi e il singhiozzo in gola, venute a dire grazie a colui che le aveva fatte sentire qualcuno attraverso il lavoro; studenti diretti a scuola, con i libri in mano, consapevoli che senza il lavoro delle mamme non avrebbero forse mai potuto affrontare gli studi; i bambini di strada a cui P. Giovanni aveva dedicato quest’ultimo anno della sua vita; tutti quelli che nella città di Khulna, attraverso l’iniziativa dell’Housing Project avevano potuto comprarsi un pezzo di terra e costruirsi una casa; i più stretti collaboratori, pieni di sgomento e di paura, ma non disperati. Si rendevano conto che era arrivato il momento, sempre auspicato da P. Giovanni, di camminare con le proprie gambe» (L'ultimo saluto a P. Abbiati).
Chiudiamo queste Note Biografiche con la testimonianza di P. A. Germano (5.11.09): «Quello che ha caratterizzato la vita di P. Giovanni è stata la sua dedizione incondizionata ai poveri, per i quali aveva sempre una iniziativa nuova da inventare e realizzare. Dedizione, la sua, radicata nella vita di fede, che era poi la ragione fondante della sua azione missionaria. P. Giovanni si coltivava alla luce della Parola di Dio, che era per lui sostanza di vita. La sua era una pietà solida, robusta, senza fronzoli, che si manifestava in uno stile di vita semplice e sobrio».

On Oct. 5, Fr. Giovanni Abbiati was involved in a serious car accident in Savar (20 miles from Dhaka) while he was traveling from Khulna to Dhaka. He was taken to the hospital in Savar, where he died shortly after his arrival.
Born in Chiuro (Sondrio) on April 30 1948, he was 61 years old.
He was born into a large and very Christian family of 9 siblings (both parents were Delegates of the Catholic Action movement) and studied for three years at the Seminary of Como. At a certain point he realized that his path lay elsewhere: «I realized that I was thinking about the missions and the missionaries and that I wanted to give myself to the Lord in a more generous way. I don’t know how, or in what circumstances it happened, but I do know that I was convinced I had to become a missionary» (Sept. 7 1965).
He joined the Xaverians for the Novitiate in Nizza Monferrato on Oct. 2 1965. He made his First Profession the following year. He completed his liceo studies in Tavernerio (1966-68) and then moved to Parma for the two-year course of Philosophy (1968-70); he was prefect in Brescia for one year (1970-71), before returning to Parma for Theology (1971-74) and ordination to the priesthood (Sept. 30, 1973).
He referred to his formation years in his application (Oct. 25, 1972) for admission to Final Profession: «These years have made me aware of just how human and limited is the gift I am offering to the Lord. However, I desire even more to consecrate my life forever to Him. I ask God to increase my Faith, Hope and Love…».
His first – and only – assignment was to Bangladesh. Apart from the two years of rotation in Cremona (1983-85) and a year of aggiornamento in Rome (2003-04), Fr. Giovanni lived the rest of his life in Bangladesh.
At the beginning of 1975, he began to study the language, something that he was not very enthusiastic about: «it was a great struggle… I was there to study Bangladeshi, eat and sleep, while the people around me had nothing to eat and had no house of their own… Our mission is to bear witness to love, poverty and hospitality…» (Missionari Saveriani, Sept. 1999).
Various tasks were entrusted to Fr. Giovanni during his long years in Bangladesh: assistant priest and then parish priest in Shimulia, Bhabarpara (1976-83), Khulna S. Maria (1987-93), Treasurer and Regional Councilor, Justice and Peace (from 1995). Above all, he was coordinator of the local Handicrafts Groups that organized the work of thousands of women.
This was evident during his funeral in the large number of people that filed past his coffin: «weeping women who came to thank the man who had made them feel they were important through their work; students on their way to school, carrying their books and aware that without the work of their mothers they would never have been able to study; the street children to whom Fr. Giovanni had dedicated the last year of his life; all those in the city of Khulna who, thanks to the Housing Project initiative, were able to buy a piece of land and build a house of their own; his closest collaborators, shocked and afraid, but not desperate. They all understood that the time had come for them to stand on their own two feet, as Fr. Giovanni had always wished» (from the last farewell to Fr. Abbiati).
We conclude these biographical notes with the testimony of Fr. A. Germano (Nov. 11, 2009): «Fr. Giovanni lived a life of unconditional dedication to the poor, on whose behalf he always prepared and carried out new initiatives. His dedication had profound roots in his life of faith, which was the founding motivation of his missionary activities. Fr. Giovanni nourished his life with the Word of God. He had a solid and robust devotion without any frills, which was visible in a simple and sober lifestyle».
