P. Giovanni Angius

Missionario nella sofferenza, di anni 57. Sepolto al paese d'origine
P. Giovanni Angius nacque a Bonorva di Sassari il 3.VII.1925, da Giovanni e Faedda Giovanangela in una famiglia che darà al Signore ed alla Congregazione Saveriana anche un altro figlio, P. Giovanni Maria.
Dopo aver frequentato gli studi ginnasiali nel Seminario Diocesano, entrò nell'Istituto Saveriano a Parma il 23.VIII.1942, iniziando il giorno successivo l'anno di Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli.
Emessa la prima Professione Religiosa l'8.IX.1943 completò gli studi liceali e teologici prima a Parma poi a Piacenza dove venne ordinato Sacerdote il 10.III.1951.
Negli anni immediatamente successivi (1951-1956) fu insegnante nelle Case Saveriane di Massa Lucana, Pedrengo, Alzano Lombardo; già da quegli anni andò soggetto a forme varie di esaurimento che poi lo tormenteranno per tutta la vita.
Il 29.X.1956 partì Missionario per il Giappone: nonostante i suoi generosi sforzi di volontà, il clima si dimostrò superiore alla sua resistenza fisica. Alla fine del 1958 dovette rientrare in Italia. Passò circa un anno in Sardegna nella Casa di Macomer e poi accettò volentieri di insegnare ai giovani aspiranti saveriani di vocazione adulta a Nizza Monferrato prima e poi a Piacenza. Ricordando quegli anni, il P. Fontana scrive:
"...Nonostante la persuasione che la sua permanenza in Giappone fosse stata uno scacco e continuasse a pensare al suo ritorno ad ogni costo, svolse assai bene l'impegno di insegnante... Continuava a studiare giapponese per conto suo, nella speranza di rimettere piede in Giappone... Oltre a ciò era disponibile per il Ministero..."
Sentendosi alquanto meglio in salute, tornò ad insistere con i Superiori per potere ripartire per le Missioni. Fu accontentato ed il 5.1.1964 partì per la Prelazia di Abaeté, nel Parà in Brasile Nord. Per sei anni potò così lavorare in Amazzonia ad Abaetetuba, in Acarà, a Tomè Açù. Il Vescovo Mons. Frosi scrisse di lui:
"...Ricordo dei suoi anni trascorsi in Amazzonia due caratteristiche: il suo entusiasmo missionario e la predilezione per i piccoli ed i bambini... "
Purtroppo anche il clima amazzonico si dimostrò superiore alla resistenza fisica del P. Angius. Costretto al rimpatrio, fece parte della Comunità di Tavernerio: qui si prestava per il ministero sacerdotale nelle Parrocchie, pur tuttavia in modo limitato a causa delle continue sofferenze per la sua incerta salute.
Agli inizi del 1982 un dolore che egli sentiva da tempo in bocca rivelò la presenza di un tumore: con la fine del suo sogno di ritornare in Brasile cominciava per lui il duro calvario di una nuova sofferenza. Fu ricoverato all'Ospedale di Milano, ma le cure si rilevarono inefficaci: man mano che il male progrediva, gli riusciva sempre più difficile prendere il cibo e parlare.
Egli era perfettamente conscio del suo male ed accettò con profondo spirito di fede questa nuova prova: al Superiore Generale più volte fece capire di voler offrire generosamente al Signore la sua sofferenza per la Chiesa intera ed in particolare per la Congregazione Saveriana,
"… affinché il Signore tramite la Madonna concedesse il miracolo di rinnovare i Saveriani - si era in preparazione dell'XI° Capitolo Generale (n.d.r.) - e di farli diventare più santi tutti...".
Trasportato alla Casa Madre di Parma, rimase lucido e sereno fino alla morte: spirò nel Signore nelle prime ore del 25 maggio 1983. Durante la celebrazione per i suoi funerali, i presenti poterono ascoltare alcune composizioni poetiche che egli aveva in precedenza composto ed inciso su un registratore per alcuni amici sofferenti: l'ultima concludeva così: "... Ma so, Padre, che dietro alle porte della Tua Dimora, ci sarai Tu ad abbracciarmi!".

Fr. Giovanni Angius died in the early hours of May 25 1983 at the Mother House in Parma, following a long battle with throat tumor. He was 57 years old, born at Bonorva (Sassari) on July 3 1925.
He studied at the diocesan Seminary of Sassari, and entered the Xaverians in Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli on Aug. 23 1942. He professed vows on Sept. 8 1943, and after a few years of theology studies, he was ordained a priest at Piacenza on Mar. 10 1951.
Following his ordination, he taught at Massa Lucana, Pedrengo, and Alzano (1951-56), even though he was fighting periods of depression which bothered him the rest of his life. He was assigned to Japan in 1956, but his health was too week to withstand the climate and the environment. He returned to Italy in 1958, where he worked in Sardinia at Macomer, and then at Nizza Monferrato and Piacenza. He kept up with his studies of Japanese, hoping to go back there; yet he was very willing to immerse himself in the teaching capacity, especially in those houses like Nizza and Piacenza specialized for second-career vocations.
Fr. Fontana writes about those years: "He committed himself to the teaching role, even though his experience in Japan was considered a failure; he had to go back no matter the cost. Yet his priority was teaching... and made himself available to pastoral ministry." Because of some improvements on his health, he was assigned to Brazil North, the Amazon region, where he served in the parishes at Abaetetuba, Acarà and Tomè Acù for six years, with mission enthusiasm and with concern for youth in need.
Mons. Angelo Frosi, bishop of Abaetetuba, remembers Fr. Giovanni during his service in Acarà: “Thinking of Fr. Angius in the Amazons, I recall two characteristics among the many: his missionary enthusiasm, and his preferential choice of the children. He was ever enthused of the mission through his preaching, correspondence and conversation, even with some exaggerations. He loved this people and tried to serve them with much goodness and simplicity. His faithful parishioners understood his great heart and his good will. He communicated well, in particular, with the children and the youth. When I would see him among the children, I would often recall the image of Jesus in the Gospels.”
Back in Italy, Fr. Angius joined the community of Tavernerio, ready to give a hand in parishes. It is at the beginning of 1982 when he found out that he had a tumor in his mouth, and since then, he offered his sufferings “so that the Lord, through Mary, may renew the Xaverians – at a time of the 11 General Chapter – and make them all holy,” as he expressed to the Superior General.
A few months before his death, Fr. Giovanni wrote to Br. Zanini, who was also sick: “I feel close to you, for in suffering we are nearer to the heart of Jesus and Mary at the Cross. Illness is like a ‘dark moment’, but with Jesus and Mary, there is only ‘light.’ Let us appreciate the present moment, for the past is gone, and the future is only a tunnel at the end of which, the Father, the Son and Mary will welcome us with their open arms.” In one of his poems, which were read during the Funeral Liturgy at the Mother House in Parma, he wrote: “But I know, oh Father, that behind the heavenly doors, it will be you to embrace me!”
