"La più grande disgrazia che possa capitarvi è non essere utili a nes-suno e sentire che la vostra vita non serve a nulla" (Follereau).
Il p. Adriano si fece missionario per essere utile a molti. Scriveva nel 1947, poco dopo l'ordinazione sacerdotale: "Mi sono presentato al Signore così come sono, con la volontà di lavorare senza risparmio".
Nato nel 1920 e compiuti gli studi nelle nostre scuole, fu impegnato per 10 anni nelle nostre case apostoliche in Sardegna, ad Ancona e a Desio. Si distingueva per la dedizione e il senso pratico con cui affrontava i problemi d'ogni giorno. Al momento della sua attesa partenza per le missioni (destinato al Giappone) il Superiore Generale lo elogiò come l'uomo della fede e dell'obbedienza. Lui modestamente preferiva chiamarsi "tappabuchi".
In Giappone lavorò dal 1957 al 1965 nelle varie residenze saveriane. Fu anche economo regionale per due anni. Passato un anno negli Stati Uniti in aiuto al p. Frassineti, fu inviato in Sierra Leone. Richiamato l'anno dopo in Italia, fu assegnato alla casa di Ancona, e nel 1970 ebbe l'incarico della Procura delle Missioni a Parma.
Tornò in Sierra Leone nel 1975 dove si rese utile specialmente nel periodo passato a Kamalu.
Nel 1980 le condizioni di salute lo costrinsero a tornare in Italia. Ben presto i medici lo trovarono affetto da leucoencefalite, conseguenza d'una insidiosa malaria cerebrale contratta in Africa.
La malattia ebbe effetti devastanti. Chi lo aveva conosciuto esuberante di attività, lo trovò d'improvviso vecchio, taciturno e apatico. Visse gli ultimi anni in carrozzella. Morì alla Casa Madre il 2 aprile 1989.
Una linea spezzata, una vita a zig-zag, disse di lui un confratello. Ma non si presentò a Dio a mani vuote, perché aveva lavorato per gli altri con fede e obbedienza

Fr. Adriano Berdini died at the Mother House in Parma on April 2 1989 of leukoencephalitis following cerebral malaria. He was 68 years old, born at S. Vittoria in Matenano (Ascoli Piceno) on Nov. 30 1920.
He entered the Xaverians at Poggio S. Marcello in 1931, and following the Novitiate Year at S. Pietro in Vincoli, he professed religious missionary vows on Oct. 3 1939. He was then ordained priest on Sept. 20 1947. He wrote to the Superior General, just before his ordination: “I presented myself before the Lord as I am, with the will to work without reservations for the Reign of God.”
Fr. Berdini’s first assignments were in Italy, for about 10 years, serving in houses in Sardinia, at Ancona and at Desio. He committed himself to help confreres and students, and he distinguished himself for his practical sense in facing daily problems. Before his departure for Japan, the Superior General affirmed him for being a man of faith and obedience, even though Fr. Berdini used to call himself a “tappabuchi”.
He was assigned to Japan on Oct. 30 1957, and worked in various residences there, until 1965, and took the responsibility of being Regional Administrator for two years. He spent a year in the USA, and then went to Sierra Leone on May 20 1966, for about a year.
Back to Italy in 1968, he worked at Ancona, and then was put in charge of the Mission Procure of Parma in 1970. He attempted again the climate of Sierra Leone in 1975, and spent his service in pastoral activities at Kamalu until 1980.
Unfortunately, in 1980 his health became frail because of an acute form of cerebral malaria. The doctors found him affected of leukoencephalitis, with devastating effects in his personality. Once so exuberant and full of life, Fr. Berdini became old, quiet and apathetic. He lived for a few months at Alzano Lombardo in 1983, and then the last 4 years of his life on a wheelchair at Parma.
A confrere described his life as a broken line, with ups and downs. Fr. Berdini gave much to others, with the characteristic faith and obedience he was capable of. May the Lord welcome him into Paradise.
