Nato a Boston, Mass. (U.S.A.) l'11.II.1881 da genitori parmensi colà emigrati, all'età di sei anni venne in Italia assieme alla famiglia rimpatriata a Berceto. Frequentato il Ginnasio e la 1° Liceale nel Seminario, entrò nell'Istituto il 18.VII.1898.
Emessa la Professione Religiosa il 22.II.1902, fu ordinato Sacerdote a Ravenna il 14.VI.1903 da Mons. Conforti. Partente con il primo gruppo Saveriano destinato alle Missioni dell'Honan in Cina, s'imbarcò a Genova il 18.I.1904.
Dopo aver appreso la lingua, passò nel 1906 alla Residenza di Hsianghsien con l'incarico di Procuratore della nuova Missione e quindi nel Distretto di Shuchow: percorse in infaticabili viaggi (a piedi, a cavallo, in bicicletta - egli per primo introdusse in Cina il "cavallo di ferro"!) quasi tutto il Territorio delle future Diocesi di Cheng-chow e Loyang.
Richiamato in Italia da Mons. Conforti nel 1911 per essere proposto alla direzione della Casa Madre in Parma, iniziò quella ventennale collaborazione diretta con il Fondatore che terminò solo con la morte del Padre nel 1931. I problemi di reclutamento, di formazione, quelli disciplinari e finanziari, le direttive, le proposte, le speranze, i timori, le gioie e i dolori... tutto passò attraverso le due anime nei colloqui quotidiani nella Sala Rossadell'Istituto o nel Vescovado di Parma.
Visse con il Fondatore il problema fondamentale dell'approvazione delle Costituzioni (nel XXV° dell'Istituto), dell'apertura delle prime Scuole Apostoliche di Vicenza (1919), di Poggio S. Marcello (1925), di Vallo della Lucania (1930), di Grumone (1930).
Collaborò con P. Manna e Mons. Conforti alla fondazione, approvazione e consolidamento dell'Unione Missionaria del Clero".
D'accordo e con la benedizione di Mons. Conforti, diede impulso alla cinematografia saveriana realizzando (con i soli apporti interni dell'Istituto come registi, operatori, artisti) ben tre films: "Il Nido degli Aquilotti" (1924), "Fiamme" (1929) e "Africa Nostra" (1931).
Per molti anni Direttore di "Fede e Civiltà", "Voci d'Oltremare" e "Vita Nostra", scrisse molti articoli in queste Riviste e su vari giornali e periodici. Scrisse anche la prima Biografia di Mons. Conforti.
Fu pure Direttore apprezzato del Museo Etnografico Cinese di Parma, iniziato dallo stesso Fondatore.
Nel 1928 accompagnò il Fondatore nella Visita Canonica ai Missionari della Cina, viaggiando via mare all'andata e per Transiberiana al ritorno.
Discretamente, versato nelle lingue, era di piacevole conversazione in cinese, francese, inglese ed esperanto. Di quest'ultima lingua era entusiasta e fin dal 1923 ne introdusse lo studio regolare nell'Istituto.
Rieletto, dopo la morte del Fondatore, Vicario Generale ed Economo Generale, si trattenne a Parma fino al 1935 quando, per la malattia e la morte del P. Popoli gli fu affidata la carica di Procuratore Generale presso la Santa Sede, carica che tenne ininterrottamente per trent'anni (!).
Unico fra tutti i Saveriani, partecipò ai primi Otto Capitoli Generali della Congregazione: dal primo del 1929 all'Ottavo del 1966.
Nei due Processi per la Causa di Beatificazione del Servo di Dio Mons. Conforti fu il teste pii qualificato ed importante.
Dotato di una salute di ferro (a parte un'ernia giovanile), nel febbraio del 1974 accusò i primi disturbi di un processo infiammatorio che interessando gradualmente tutto l'apparato respiratorio lo portò alla morte la sera del 1° Maggio 1974, a Parma nella Clinica delle Piccole Figlie.

Fr. Giovanni Bonardi died on May 1 1974 at the clinic of the “Piccole Figlie” of Parma. He was 93 years old, born at Boston, Mass. (USA) on Feb. 11 1881, from immigrant parents, originally from Parma (Italy).
He returned with them to Berceto (Parma) when he was 6 years old, and entered the Xaverians on July 18 1898 after studies at the diocesan seminary of Parma. He made Religious Vows on Feb. 22 1902, and was ordained a priest in Ravenna by Msgr. Conforti on June 14 1903. He was part of the first group of Xaverians to leave for China: on Jan. 18 1904 they departed from Genoa port towards Honan, China.
After a few months of Chinese studies, he moved to Hsianghsien in 1906 as the Procurator of the mission and the district of Shuchow: he traveled on foot, by horse or by bicycle the whole territory which would include the future dioceses of Cheng-chow and Loyang. He was the one who introduced to the Chinese people the “Iron-Horse”, meaning, the bicycle!
Recalled back to Italy in 1911 by Msgr. Conforti as director of the Mother House, Fr. Bonardi engaged in an extended 20-year collaboration with the Founder, sharing ideas about vocation recruitment, formation, economy, discipline, directives, suggestions, hopes and fears, joys and sorrows… all of these things were discussed by those souls aflame in the Red Room of the Xaverian Mother House on in the Bishop’s residence.
He experienced the development of the Constitutions on the occasion of the 25 anniversary of the Xaverian foundation, the founding of the first Apostolic Houses of Vicenza (1919), Poggio S. Marcello (1925), Vallo della Lucania (1930) and Grumone (1930). He also collaborated to the foundation, approval and development of the Missionary Union of Clergy, together with Fr. Manna and Msgr. Conforti.
With the blessing of the Founder, he pushed for cinematography in the Xaverian congregation, with the realization of three movies, all done in-house: “Il Nido degli Aquilotti” (1924), “Fiamme” (1929) and “Africa Nostra” (1931). He was director of “Fede e Civiltà”, “Voci d’Oltremare” and “Vita Nostra”, writing lots of articles in these magazines. He was the first to write a biography of our Founder. He was also the director of the Chinese Ethnographic Museum.
In 1928 he accompanied Msgr. Conforti in the Canonic Visit of the Xaverians in China, by boat going, and coming back by Transiberian train.
After the death of the Founder, he was re-elected Vicar-General and Treasurer and stayed in Parma until 1935, when, following the sickness and death of Fr. Popoli, he became General Procurator to the Holy See, a responsibility he held for 30 years. He was the only Xaverian who took part to the first 8 General Chapters of the congregation: from the first in 1929 to the eighth in 1966. He was the most important and qualified witness for the two processes of the Cause of Beatification of the Servant of God Guido M. Conforti.
Healthy most of his life, in Feb. 1974 Fr. Bonardi started having breathing problems which brought him to his death on May 1 1974, at the age of 93. May the Lord grant him eternal rest.
