Il 12 agosto 1985 ha perso la vita, in un incidente d'auto il nostro confratello messicano, Clemente Nuño, studente di seconda teologia. Egli stava rientrando a Guadalajara da Ciudad Victoria ove, assieme ad altri tre confratelli, aveva partecipato al Congresso Giovanile organizzato dalle Pontificie Opere Missionarie e vi aveva allestito uno stand inteso ad illustrare il nostro Istituto.
Il viaggio si svolgeva di notte, verso le ventitré. Quando i quattro furono nei pressi di Tenatitlàn, a causa dello scoppio di un pneumatico, la vettura uscì di strada rovesciandosi. Nel contraccolpo il Nuño ed il P. Josè Granell che sedevano sui sedili posteriori furono sbalzati fuori dall'abitacolo. Il P.Granell riportò serie lesioni alla spina dorsale. Il Nuño restò morto sul colpo.
Clemente Nuño era nato a Guadalajara il 31 ottobre del 1961 e vi aveva frequentato, nel 1973-74, con assiduità e fedeltà il nostro pre-seminario. Egli fu uno dei pochissimi allievi del pre-seminario che perseverò ed entrò poi nella Scuola Apostolica di San Juan del Rio. Per farlo dovette superare le resistenze di suo padre.
Finito il ciclo di studi di S. Juan, passò vari mesi nella Missione di Santa Cruz, Huejutla, e poi entrò nel postulato di Salamanca. Concluso il suo anno di noviziato, emise la sua prima professione a Salamanca il 12 agosto 1982. "Quel giorno, ricorda il P.Figini, Superiore Regionale, egli era felice".
Dopo la professione iniziò gli studi di teologia. I suoi compagni di classe ed i superiori ne ricordano l'amore al lavoro, la grande disponibilità, la generosità senza limiti. Non sapeva dire di no a nessuno. Aveva poi spiccate attitudini per le cose pratiche: meccanica, elettricità... Era molto facile trovarlo in giro per la casa con del materiale elettrico in mano, tanto che era soprannominato "click" dal rumore che fa un interruttore quando azionato.
Questa passione per l'elettricità gli aveva fatto passare anche un grave pericolo durante il noviziato. Un giorno, mentre stava riparando dei guasti all'impianto della casa, era stato colpito da una violenta scarica che gli aveva prodotto bruciature ad una mano ed al torace e lo aveva scagliato al suolo. Era stato miracolosamente salvato da un ramo che ne aveva attutito la caduta.
Dice di lui il suo compagno di scuola Jorge Villagomez: "Nel cammino percorso verso la mèta del sacerdozio missionario, Clemente ha preso molto sul serio le parole della Scrittura: 'Che ciascuno, con i doni che ha, si ponga al servizio degli altri, come un buon amministratore della molteplice grazia di Dio'. Clemente aveva sempre un sì generoso per qualunque cosa gli si chiedesse. Amava assai le persone del popolo, specialmente le più bisognose".
"L'ultimo giorno che lo vidi - dice ancora il P.Figini - stava preparando il materiale per lo stand di Ciudad Victoria. Mi dette un forte abbraccio, con il suo abituale sorriso, pieno di gioia. Fu l'ultimo saluto che ci demmo".
Da quel viaggio Clemente non tornò più a Guadalajara.
Il Signore lo deviò sulle strade eterne. Riposi in pace!

Clemente Nuño Lopez died in a car accident at Tepatitlan (Jalisco – Mexico) on Aug. 12 1985. He was on his way home from a Youth Congress organized by the Pontifical Mission Societies, where he had a stand displaying our Xaverian congregation. He was together with Fr. Granell and two other confreres, when, at about 11pm, a tire exploded causing the car to veer off the road. Clemente and Fr. Granell, in the back seat, were thrown out of the car: Clemente died instantly, while Fr. Granell reported some serious spinal cord injuries. Clemente was 23 years old, born at Guadalajara (Jalisco – Mexico) on Oct. 31 1961.
He frequented our pre-seminary school at Guadalajara in 1973-74, and was one of the few to continue his journey towards entering the Xaverian congregation. He moved to S. Juan del Rio, even with much opposition from his father. He then spent many months in our mission of Santa Cruz, Huejutla, before entering the year of Postulancy at Salamanca. At the end of his Novitiate, he made his first profession at Salamanca on Aug. 12 1982. A few months before his religious profession, he wrote to the Regional Superior: “Nine years ago the Xaverian Congregation opened the doors to me, so that I would get to know it. Notwithstanding the difficulties of this formation journey, I felt that the Lord wants me to be part of this family, so that I can serve Him and give Him greater glory. For this reason I now let you know how much I love to be consecrated in the Xaverian family. Furthermore, I believe that the Lord wants me in the service of this family which unites missionaries the world over.”
Right after his profession, Clemente started his theology studies, with much appreciation from many of his classmates and superiors for his great sense of availability, work and generosity. He could not say no, and was frequently involved with works in mechanics and electricity, so much that his classmates nicknamed him “click.” While in Salamanca for Novitiate, he came close to death, because of an electric accident. He was fixing one of the panels adjacent to the house, when he was thrown down by a violent high-tension jolt. It was saved miraculously by a tree branch, which eased his fall. In that accident, he reported bad burns at the hand and his body.
In 1984 Clemente was sent as prefect in the house of Arandas. He showed in this house where he would find the source of his great serenity and availability. “He spent long hours in front of the Blessed Sacrament” shared Guadalupe Robledo, his companion during the prefect year. “Every day he would recite the Morning Prayers as he walked in the hallway. I believe that this virtue came from his own family. His mother was the fountain of his faith life.”
Jorge Villagomez wrote: “On his journey towards missionary priesthood, Clemente took seriously the challenge of the Scripture ‘As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace.’ (1Pet. 4:10) Clemente was ever generous. He loved people, especially the needy among them.”
At the end of the funerals in our Chapel in Guadalajara, beside many of our confreres and students, there were many priests, friends and benefactors, and many parishioners from St. Dominic Savior Parish where he would help in pastoral work; even some people from Victoria Tamaulipas, who came to know Clemente during the Congress. May he rest in Peace!
