P. Remo Cardin

Il 12 marzo 2011 alle ore 14.15, a Parma in Casa Madre si è spento il P. Remo Cardin. Era in cura dal 1984. Aveva 86 anni compiuti, essendo nato il 21.01.1925 a Sailetto di Suzzara (Mantova).
P. Remo entrò all'Istituto a Vicenza nel 1938. «Mettendo il piede in quella casa – scrisse il 25.4.49 - ho sentito che di lì io non ne sarei più uscito. Non conoscevo per nulla la vita che mi attendeva, pure il mio cuore era contento, e internamente andavo ripetendo: cascherà il mondo ma la mia vocazione è di diventare missionario». Percorse l'iter formativo allora vigente: dopo le tre medie a Vicenza (38-41), i due anni del ginnasio a Grumone (41-43), il Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli con la Prima Professione a Parma il 5.11.1944, Ia Liceo a Castel Sidoli, IIa e IIIa a Parma con ripetizione della terza classe a Desio. Questo fu l'anno più duro dell'iter formativo: «Le assicuro, Padre – scrisse il 15.7.48 - che se io non vedessi risplendere chiaramente la vocazione missionaria davanti al mio sguardo mi sarei già scoraggiato da tempo ed avrei abbandonato questa via, ma se in me c'è una convinzione ed una certezza incrollabile è proprio questa: io sarò missionario, lo sento troppo bene. Il Signore mi ha già dato tanti segni, non escluso quello della sofferenza». In effetti l'entusiasmo per la vocazione da parte di P. Remo, compare regolarmente anche nelle presentazioni previste in qualche passaggio del processo educativo.
Come in quelle per il Noviziato e il Suddiaconato: «Di indole è molto allegro e socievole, faceto, senza pretese, piuttosto lento, generoso. Mostra poco senso pratico. È entusiasta della sua vocazione» (21.6.43); «Ha buone qualità, è industrioso e di iniziativa; carattere allegro, di compagnia … non è tagliato per lo studio, specialmente speculativo … Di zelo molto buono; manifesta ottimi sentimenti» (12.9.52).
Dopo l'anno di Desio, fu prefetto a Tortolì (OG ) e, dal 49 al 53, studente di teologia a Piacenza. Ricevette l'Ordinazione presbiterale il 21.3.53. Nell'occasione scrisse al P. Generale: «Quando sarò sacerdote, mi faccia scomparire il più presto possibile dall'Europa; non mi sento capace di nulla, all'infuori di amare e aiutare chi soffre. Mi sento povero di tutto tranne che di cuore. Sogno spesso di vivere tra i lebbrosi con P. Lini: come morirei volentieri tra loro» ( 21.3.53).
Fu inviato alla comunità del Noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli come Propagandista e aiuto economo. Furono cinque anni di animazione missionaria, di giornate missionarie, di lavori agricoli e di questue varie.
Nel 1958 fu destinato al Brasile Sud. Vi rimase poco meno di tre anni; il tempo per studiare la lingua e per iniziare l'attività pastorale, viceparroco a Curitiba e a Centenario do Sul. Ai primi di marzo del 1961 fu mandato in Amazzonia con altri tre confratelli: i primi saveriani in quei territori del Parà che diventarono la diocesi di Abaetetuba.
P. Remo lavorò in quella missione per più di 20 anni: Vice parroco a Abaetetuba - Cattedrale (61-63); Parroco a Belém N. S. Das Merces (63-64); a Barcarena (64-73); a Abaetetuba: Rainha da Paz (73-78); Vice parroco a Barcarena: (78-80). Infine in cura alla Domus di Belém (80-82): le condizioni di salute normalmente precarie risultavano seriamente compromesse.
Nell'82 rientrò in Italia e dall'84 fece parte della comunità di Parma Casa Madre: in cura e per offrire il sacrificio «di efficace forza redentiva» (C 46) per la missione.
A conclusione un suo autoritratto del 25.4.49; certo, giovanile ma particolarmente fedele.
«Lo so, io sarò sempre un povero diavolo perché il Signore non mi ha dato molti talenti. Ma se si tratta di attaccamento al nostro ideale e di amore alla nostra Congregazione, oso mettermi ben avanti. Non avverrà mai che io non accetti subito e con amore qualsiasi proposta che lei [il P. Generale] in seguito mi farà …. Unico mio dispiacere è il limitato rendimento scolastico … Mi consolo pensando che se non ho particolari capacità speculative, sono corredato di un buon criterio pratico per merito del quale mi sono già reso assai utile alla congregazione. Non saprò affrontare una questione filosofica ma in compenso farò un impianto idrico, farò una stufa, una parete, un congegno elettromeccanico... farò ridere dal palco qualche confratello stracarico di grattacapi, insomma qualche cosa farò».
Il Signore accolga nella comunione dei santi questo fratello, a lungo provato nel crogiuolo della sofferenza.

Fr. Remo Cardin died on March 12 2011 at the Mother House, Parma, where he had been in care since 1984. Born in Sailetto di Suzzara (Mantova, Italy) on Jan. 21 1925, he was 86 years old.
Fr. Remo joined the Institute in Vicenza in 1938. On April 25 1949, he wrote: «When I entered the house I felt that I would never leave again. I knew nothing about the life that awaited me, but in my heart I was happy and said to myself that I would become a missionary, even if the whole world collapsed». He completed the formation program of those times: after three years of secondary school at Vicenza (1938-41), he spent two years of high school in Grumone (1941-43) and completed the Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli. He made his First Profession in Parma on Nov. 5 1944. He continued his high school studies at Castel Sidoli (first year), Parma (second and third years) with the repetition of the third year at Desio. This was the most difficult year of his formation experience and he thus described it in a letter on July 15 1948: «I can assure you, Father, that if I hadn’t kept the missionary vocation clearly in my sight, I would have become discouraged and left; but I carried with me a conviction and steadfast certainty: “I will be a missionary.” The Lord has already given me many signs, including the sign of suffering».
Indeed, Fr. Remo’s enthusiasm for his vocation was also frequently mentioned in the reports that accompanied him at the established times throughout the formation program. By way of example, the reports at the end of Novitiate and presentation to the Sub-diaconate: «He is very cheerful and sociable, humorous, unpretentious, rather slow and generous. He is not very practical. He is enthusiastic about his vocation» (June 21, 1943); «He has good qualities, he is hard-working and shows initiative; a cheerful character and good company… He is not cut out for studies, especially of a speculative nature… He is very zealous» (Sept. 12 1952).
After the year of Desio, he served as prefect at Tortolì. He studied theology in Piacenza (1949-53). He was ordained priest on March 21 1953. On that occasion he wrote to the Superior General: «When I am a priest, I ask you to send me away from Europe as soon as possible; I do not feel capable of anything, except loving and helping those who suffer. The only riches I possess are within my heart. I dream often of living among the lepers with Fr. Lini: how I would die willingly among them» (March 21, 1953).
He was sent to the community of the Novitiate of S. Pietro in Vincoli as assistant treasurer and to work in the Propaganda sector. He spent five years working in missionary animation, mission days, farm work and collection of alms.
He was assigned to South Brazil in 1958 and he remained there for just under three years, just the time to study the language and begin pastoral ministry and work as assistant priest at Curitiba and at Centenario do Sul. In early March 1961 he was sent to the Amazons with another three confreres: the first Xaverians to work in the territories of the Parà, that became the diocese of Abaetetuba.
Fr. Remo worked in that mission for more than 20 years: he was assistant priest at Abaetetuba – Cathedral (1961-63); parish priest at Belém N. S. Das Merces (1963-64); at Barcarena (1964-73); at Abaetetuba, Rainha da Paz (1973-78) and assistant priest at Barcarena (1978-80). Finally, he moved to the Domus of Belém (1980-82) on health grounds.
In 1982, he returned to Italy and, from 1984, he was a member of the Parma Mother House community, where he received medical care and offered his suffering for the mission.
Fr. Remo thus described himself on April 25 1949: «I know I will never have much to offer because the Lord did not give me many talents. Yet, as far as attachment to our ideal and love for our Congregation, I feel I can hold my head high. I will always promptly and joyfully accept any proposal that you [the Superior General] will make to me… My only regret concerns my limited academic achievements… I console myself by thinking that my lack of speculative ability is more than compensated by a good practical sense, through which I have already been quite useful to the Congregation. I may not be capable of dealing with a philosophical question, but I know about plumbing, I can build a heater, a wall, an electrical device… I can make a worried confrere laugh. In short, there is something that I can do for others».
