Nato a Villa del Ferro di S. Germano dei Berici (VI) il 26.1.1926, a 11 anni entrava nella Casa Saveriana di Vicenza per gli studi del Ginnasio inferiore. Emessi i Voti Religiosi a S. Pietro in Vincoli (RA) il 7.IX.1943 ed ultimati gli Studi Teologici a Piacenza, quivi ricevette l'Ordinazione Sacerdotale il 29.III.1952.
Per alcuni anni lavorò nella Casa Saveriana di Udine come animatore vocazionale (chi scrive deve a lui l'entrata all'Istituto Saveriano il 2.X.1951) ed insegnante.
Nel novembre 1956 partiva per il Bengala, dove spenderà l'intera sua vita missionaria: 22 anni, interrotti da brevi soggiorni in Italia. Il suo primo ambiente di attività missionaria fu Borodol: qui egli iniziò ad incarnarsi in modo ineguagliabile nella realtà dei "Muci", i fuori casta del Bengala di allora; da qui mandò reiterati inviti in Italia per avere aiuti:
“… Io finora ho promesso, ma non si può sempre e solo promettere. In un villaggio al quale si prometteva da tre anni, ho sentito oggi che sono stati chiamati i protestanti... Vorrei avere le ali per correre in Italia e gettarmi in ginocchio davanti a tanti che sperperano, mentre qui le anime hanno sete di Dio e devo respingerle e dire loro: Andatevene. Può un Missionario avere un simile coraggio?"
Dopo sei anni a Borodol, il P. Serafino, nel 1963 fu trasferito a Satkhira, prima come "missionario vagante", come egli stesso amava definirsi, poi come responsabile di quella parrocchia. Con incomparabile capacità di adattamento seppe condurre un'azione di "sfondamento" tramite un primo annuncio fatto di amicizia umana con non-cristiani, anche se poi nel battezzarli, qualcuno vide nel P. Serafino una certa fretta... Curò l'ampliamento dell'Orfanotrofio maschile e la costruzione in muratura della chiesetta in vari villaggi: Jeltupi, Khordo, Roghontpur, Shenegari, dando lavoro e cibo a centinaia di persone.
Dal settembre 1965, durante la guerra indo-pakistana, gli fu negato il permesso di soggiorno in Pakistan: dovette rientrare in Italia, fino al settembre 1967 quando,riottenuto il visa, ripartì con il P. Cobbe. Ritornato a Satkhira fu testimone nel 1970 del gravissimo ciclone che causò nel Paese oltre mezzo milione di morti e quindi della lotta civile conclusasi con la creazione del Bangladesh, durante la quale a Khulna fu ucciso il saveriano P. M. Veronesi.
Rientrato in Italia nel giugno 1973 vi rimase fino al febbraio del 1974 quando ripartì per il Bangladesh destinato a Khulna poi a Selabunia.
Nell'inverno del 1977 cominciò a sentire i primi sintomi della sua malattia: fatica a deglutire, difficoltà a digerire. Gli fu diagnosticato un tumore all'esofago! Rientrato in Italia nella primavera del 1978 ed operato all'ospedale di Parma si riebbe in poco tempo e si sentì pronto a ripartire il 25.XI.1978, carico di entusiasmo per un nuovo tipo di presenza missionaria: "Fare missione in Bangladesh oggi - diceva - significa mettersi al livello della gente, cercando di incarnare Cristo secondo il loro modo di sentire. Solo se il prete è come i loro "guru" (santoni) è ascoltato..."
Egli cominciò il nuovo lavoro missionario a Borodol, ma le condizioni fisiche peggioravano rapidamente. Dopo un ricovero all'ospedale di Jessore divenne necessario farlo rientrare in Italia.
Ricoverato nella Clinica delle Piccole Figlie di Parma, vi concluse il suo calvario il 24.IV.1979.
I "Muci" lo chiamavano "l'uomo dalle cento virtù"; i suoi Confratelli del Bangladesh dissero di lui: "Era l'uomo che si donava" "Era felice di essere missionario"; "Mi ha mostrato come si fa a morire"; "Ha amato troppo"; “Meriterebbe un monumento"; “L’abbiamo fatto soffrire perché non l'abbiamo conosciuto nella sua umanità, nel suo lasciarsi "scuoiare" per Cristo".
È sepolto a Biassono (MI).

Fr. Serafino Dalla Vecchia, ìthe Apostle and Brother of the Muci of Bengalaî died at the Clinic of Piccole Figlie in Parma on April 24 1979 of esophagus tumor. He was 53 years old, born at Villa Del Ferro di S. Germano dei Berici (Vicenza) on Jan. 26 1926.
He entered the Xaverians at Vicenza when he was 11 years old. Following Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, he professed religious missionary vows on Sept. 7 1943. Then, at the end of his Theology in Piacenza, he was ordained priest on March 29 1952. Fr. Serafinoís first assignment was at the Xaverian house in Udine as mission and vocation director, and teacher, from 1952 to 1956.
On Nov. 29 1956, Fr. Serafino left for East Pakistan (Bangladesh), where he spent, on and off, the rest of his missionary life, about 22 years with a few months of rest and sickness in Italy. His first environment of pastoral activity was Borodol, where he worked well with the ìMuciî, the outcasts of Bangladesh. He incarnated himself so well with them that they called him ìthe man of a hundred virtues.î
Of this experience, we read from a letter he wrote to Italy: "Until now I kept promising them many things, but we cannot promise forever. We need action. In a village where we have been promising many things for the last three years, the people there called in the Protestants. I would like to have wings to fly to Italy, and kneel in front of the many who have much, who throw away so much, and beg them to consider these souls who are thirsty of God. Oftentimes I tell the poor to go somewhere else. Can a Missionary ever have this courage?"
After six years at Borodol, Fr. Serafino moved to Satkhira in 1963, as a ìwandering Missionaryî as he called himself. He finally moved there as parish priest. With incomparable ability to adapt himself to the new situation, he began an activity of boldly proclaiming the Gospel of Christ rooted on human relationships with non-Christians, and then baptize them and accept Christís message. He also remodeled the Orphanage for boys, and built of many small brick churches at various villages: Jeltupi, Khordo, Roghontpur, Shenegarti. In this way, he provided work to many local people.
During the Indo-Pakistan war, he was denied his permit of stay in Pakistan, and so he returned to Italy in Sept. 1965, where he spent about two years of service. In Sept. 1967 he received the Visa, and departed for East Pakistan with Fr. Valerian Cobbe. At Satkhira, he witnessed the destruction of biblical proportion of the worst cyclone in its history, with some 500,000 dead, with harvest and cattle destroyed. The tragic day was Sept. 13 1970. And during these months, the Civil war continued, which ended with the Independence of Bangladesh, but with more deaths: among them was Xaverian Fr. M. Veronesi in Khulna. Fr. Serafino spend about 6 months in Italy from June 1973 to Feb. 1974 for rest. He returned to Bangladesh with assignments at Khulna and Shilabunia.
During the winter of 1977 he began having difficulties swallowing and digesting food. It was an esophagus tumor! Fr. Serafino went back to Italy in the spring of 1978, and was operated at Parma with success. On Nov. 25 1978, full of enthusiasm once again, he departed for Bangladesh, with these words: "To be a missionary in todayís Bangladesh means to be at the same level of the people, especially the poor, trying to incarnate Christís message according to their way of thinking. We missionaries will be heard only if we become like their gurus."
Fr. Serafino Dalla Vecchia was back to Borodol, where it all started some 20 years before, but his physical conditions were rapidly worsening. After a brief admittance at Jessoreís Hospital, he was sent back to Italy, at the Clinic of the Piccole Figlie of Parma. His calvary ended on April 24 1979. He was laid to rest at Biassono (Milano). These are some of the impressions of his Xaverian confreres who had come to know him while in Bangladesh: "He totally gave of himself. He was happy to be a missionary. He showed me how to die. He loved too much. We should build a monument for him. We made him suffer much because we could not understand his human touch, his letting himself be ëbrokení for Christ."
