P. GIUSEPPE DE CILLIA
Intorno alle 23,30 del 4 gennaio 2015, all’Ospedale di Parma è morto P. Giuseppe De Cillia. Aveva 78 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Plasencis – Mereto di Tomba (Udine - Italia) il 17.03.1936.
P. De Cillia, (padre Bepi per i confratelli, padre Buyengero in Burundi e Rambo per i Volontari laici), entrò tra i Saveriani a Udine nel 1949. «Io non ricordo – scrisse nel 1954 nella sua Storia della vocazione - con quali pensieri sia entrato all’Istituto. Io so che dicevo sempre, fin da piccolo, che volevo diventare sacerdote, poi è venuto P. Morandi e sono entrato in questo Istituto […] Al mio paese - aggiungeva nell’esame della vocazione - tutti dicono bene di me e tutti sono sicuri che vada avanti … Io quando penso di essere missionario penso di essere un grande missionario che converte tutti».
Dal ’49 al ’64 percorse l’iter scolastico/formativo saveriano: Medie, Udine (49-52); Ginnasio, Zelarino (52-54); Noviziato con la Prima Professione (12.9.55), S. Pietro in Vincoli; Liceo, Desio (55-58): prefetto, Brescia (58-59) e Udine (61-62); Teologia, Parma (59-61.62-64). Fu ordinato presbitero il 13.10.1963.
Sempre accompagnato dalla stima dei Superiori, come risulta dai giudizi per l’ammissione alla Prima professione e a quella Perpetua: «È di carità a prova di sacrificio per i compagni ed è pieno di sano entusiasmo per la vocazione e per il bene; allegro e amante dello sport; pietà molto buona e seria» (1955). «Carattere aperto, socievole, generoso, gode di molta popolarità tra i confratelli. Riccamente dotato di senso pratico e anche di un certo ingegno, si applica con successo alla meccanica. Riesce bene anche negli studi. Buono il substrato umano, cristiano e religioso. Nella attività catechistica ha dispiegato un notevole zelo» (1963).
Dopo l'ordinazione fu destinato al Burundi: fu parroco a Rumonge (65-66), Murago (66-76) e Rumeza (76-84); Consigliere Regionale (74-77; 79-82) e Vice Regionale (82-84).
«La caratteristica della sua pastorale a Rumonge, come altrove, fu la formazione della gente, soprattutto dei catechisti, dei capi-comunità. Fu ovunque un prete zelante, che stava lungamente in confessionale, preoccupato di far nascere una religione di vita, coerente, acculturata alla mentalità del popolo burundese. Mentre era parroco di Murago, ebbe ad affrontare la prima sanguinosa repressione degli Hutu negli anni 1972-74. E fu proprio in quella situazione che Padre Bepi si rivelò il pastore che non fugge, ma che difende il gregge, povero e oppresso, a rischio della propria vita, una caratteristica che gli fu sempre riconosciuta e della quale egli andava fiero» (P. G. Ferrari, Omilia). «Seppe accoglierci e farci gustare la misericordia di Dio. Le sue omelie incontravano proprio la nostra vita! la nostra sete! il nostro quotidiano! Il linguaggio, chiaro con le espressioni e proverbi giusti, in un bel kirundi mai sentito da nessun altro missionario» (Abbé D. Niyibizi).
Seguirono, dall’84 all’89, 5 anni di avvicendamento in Italia come animatore missionario e economo a Udine.
Nel 1989 ritornò in Burundi. Vi rimase fino al 2013, impegnato a Bujumbura e Kamenge nell’animazione giovanile, nel ministero e soprattutto nelle attività sociali e nelle costruzioni.
«Sapere il numero delle opere (chiese, scuole, case religiose, conventi, dispensari, strade, acquedotti, abitazioni per poveri, villaggetti ecc.) è francamente impossibile: di tante sue realizzazioni ero al corrente; ma quante ce ne sono delle quali nessuno sapeva niente...» (P. G. Pulcini). «Egli non lavorava solo per i Saveriani e le opere loro affidate. Tutto il Burundi – senza esagerare – era diventato per lui un unico cantiere: preti, religiosi e religiose, locali e stranieri ricorrevano a lui. Così alla fine egli passava giornate intere a supervisionare quattro o cinque cantieri sparsi sul territorio nazionale. Nessuno sa come riuscisse a farlo. Per tutto questo nel 2011 il Governo inserì il suo nome nella lista delle “persone che hanno promosso il progresso del paese” e gli conferì la cittadinanza onoraria burundese» (P. Ferrari, Omilia) .
Durante l’ultima breve permanenza in Burundi scrisse agli amici: «Sono rientrato per fare le consegne ai miei giovani confratelli. Lascerò loro in eredità l’incoraggiamento di quel vescovo che mi autorizzò a far uscire la missione dalle cerimonie, per viverla nell’impegno sociale» (MS, ottobre 2014).

Fr. Giuseppe De Cillia died in hospital in Parma on 4 January 2015. Born in Plasencis – Mereto di Tomba (Udine - Italy), on 17 March 1936, he was 78 years old.
Fr. De Cillia (known as Bepi by the confreres, Fr. Buyengero in Burundi and Rambo among the lay Volunteers) joined the Xaverians in Udine in 1949. In 1954, he thus described his budding vocation: «I don’t remember what my thoughts were when I joined the Institute. I do know that, when I was a child, I always said that I wanted to become a priest; then Fr. Morandi came along and I joined the Xaverians […] All the people of my home village speak well of me and they are sure that I will persevere … I dream of being a great missionary and converting everyone».
In the years 1949-1964 he completed the Xaverian formation program: junior high school in Udine (1949-52); senior high school in Zelarino (1952-54); Novitiate and First Profession (12.9.55) in S. Pietro in Vincoli; Lyceum in Desio (1955-58): prefect in Brescia (1958-59) and Udine (1961-62); Theology in Parma (1959-61; 1962-64). He was ordained priest on 13 October 1963.
His Superiors always thought highly of him and this emerges clearly from the reports presenting him to First Profession and Final Profession: «He shows a solid spirit of charity towards his companions, even at the cost of personal sacrifice, and he is full of enthusiasm for his vocation and for doing good; he is cheerful and loves sport; his piety is very good and serious » (1955). «He has an open, sociable and generous character, and is very popular among the confreres. He is very practical, talented and a good mechanic. He does well in his studies and has good human, Christian and religious qualities. He has shown considerable enthusiasm as a catechist» (1963).
After his ordination he was assigned to Burundi, where he served as parish priest in Rumonge (1965-66), Murago (1966-76) and Rumeza (1976-84); he was a Regional Councilor (1974-77; 1979-82) and Vice-Regional (1982-84).
During the funeral Mass homily, Fr. G. Ferrari said: «the distinctive feature of his pastoral ministry in Rumonge, and elsewhere, was the formation of the people, especially the catechists and community leaders. Everywhere he was a zealous priest, spending long hours in the confessional, determined to promote a religion of life that was consistent and acculturated in harmony with the mentality of the Burundian people. During his time as parish priest of Murago he experienced the first bloody repression of the Hutu in the years 1972-74. It was in that situation that Fr. Bepi stood out as a shepherd who does not flee, but defends his poor and oppressed flock, even putting his own life at risk, a characteristic of his that was always recognized and of which he was proud» Abbé D. Niyibizi) said: «He always welcomed us and helped us to experience God’s mercy. His homilies were in touch with our real life and our deepest desires! His language was clear, he used the right expressions and proverbs with a command of Kirundi that I never seen in any other missionary».
He then spent five years in Italy (1984-89) as a missionary animator and treasurer in Udine.
He returned to Burundi in 1989 and stayed there until 2013, working in Bujumbura and Kamenge in youth animation, pastoral ministry and, above all, social activities and construction projects.
«It is, quite frankly, impossible to calculate the number of his works (churches, schools religious houses, convents, dispensaries, roads, aqueducts, houses for the poor, small villages, etc.)» (Fr. G. Pulcini). «He did not work just for the Xaverians and the projects entrusted to them. It is no exaggeration to say that the whole of Burundi was a building site for him: priests, men and women religious, natives and foreigners, everyone turned to him. He ended up spending entire days supervising four or five building sites scattered throughout the country. No one has any idea how he managed it. In recognition of his work, the Government inserted his name in the list of “people who have promoted the progress of the country” and granted him honorary citizenship of Burundi» (Fr. Ferrari, Homily) .
During his last short stay in Burundi, he wrote to friends: «I have come back to hand everything over to my young confreres. I leave them the encouragement I received from a bishop who authorized me to take the mission beyond ceremonies in order to live it out in social commitment» (Missionari Saveriani, October 2014).
