All'Ospedale S. Elena di S. Paolo (Brasile), mercoledì 28 giugno alle ore 12.10, assistito dalla sorella Maria, è morto Dom Angelo Frosi, colpito il 18 maggio u. s. da un gravissimo infarto: aveva 71 anni, essendo nato a S. Bassano (CR) il 31.1.1924.
Dom Angelo, dopo essere stato alunno del Seminario Vescovile di Cremona, entrò nel 1940 nel Noviziato Saveriano a S. Pietro in Vincoli (RA) e fece la prima Professione l'8 settembre 1941. Dal '41 al '47 fu a Parma per gli studi liceali e i primi tre anni di teologia. Fu quindi inviato nella comunità saveriana di Holliston, Mass. (USA). Completò gli studi teologici nel Seminario Maggiore di Boston, e il 6.5.48 fu ordinato sacerdote.
Dom Angelo lavorò negli USA fino al febbraio del 1968: conseguì il titolo accademico di M. A. in history presso il Boston College; fu incaricato delle vocazioni, delle stampe e dell'economia, fu vicerettore e Rettore nelle case di formazione; dal 1962 ricoprì la carica di Superiore Regionale, il primo della Regione USA che, fino al 64, comprendeva anche le comunità saveriane del Messico.
Nel febbraio del 1968 iniziò il lungo servizio pastorale nella Prelazia di Abaeté do Tocantins, divenuta nel 1981 diocesi di Abaetetuba. Servì quella chiesa come Amministratore Apostolico, dal 1968 al 1970, e poi, dall'1.5.70, come Vescovo. Dal '71 al' 79 fu Presidente della Regione Nord II della Conferenza Episcopale Brasiliana; dal 79 all'83, membro della Commissione Episcopale della Pastorale, responsabile della Linea Missionaria; negli ultimi anni fu il Responsabile della Pastorale Vocazionale nella Regione Nord II.
Queste note, scarne ed essenziali, si chiudono con quanto comunicato dal P. Sergio Tassi dopo il commovente funerale di Dom Angelo ad Abaetetuba: "Nell'omelia di Mons. Zico e nelle testimonianze finali sono state sottolineate l'estrema bontà e l'accoglienza di Mons. Frosi, la sua delicatezza con tutte le persone, la sua particolare attenzione ai poveri, la sua incapacità di pensare male di qualcuno, la sua vita di assoluta povertà, la stima dei confratelli Vescovi, la sua totale disponibilità per i suoi diocesani, la cura eccezionale per le vocazioni...".
Dom Angelo è stato veramente fedele a quanto scrisse nel 1947: "Dinnanzi alle grandi mete che si avvicinano cresce sempre più la mia trepidazione e già da vario tempo guardo ad esse con particolare senso di responsabilità. Mete altissime che esigono di essere abbracciate fino alle ultime conseguenze, fino all'eroica corrispondenza ad esse, giorno per giorno. per questo dinanzi alla mia povertà, incapacità e miseria provo come un senso di smarrimento, dinanzi alla infinita misericordia di Dio e alla bontà materna di maria, mi si allarga il cuore e per l'aiuto loro mi sento pronto a tutto e voglio realizzare il grande ideale di santità che il Sacerdozio esige".

Msgr. Angelo Frosi died at S. Elena hospital of S. Paolo (Brazil) at 12:10pm of Wednesday June 28 1995, assisted by his sister Maria. He suffered a heart attack on May 18. Msgr. Frosi was 71 years old, born at S. Bassano (Cremona) on Jan. 31 1924.
Dom Angelo (as he was called in Brazil), after studies at the diocesan seminary of Cremona, entered the Xaverian Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna) in 1940, and professed Religious Vows on Sept. 8 1941. He studied Liceo and Theology in Parma from 1941 to 1947, and then was assigned to the community of Holliston, Mass. in the United States. There he completed his theology studies at the Major Seminary of Boston, and was ordained priest on May 6 1948.
Dom Angelo worked in the States until February 1968: he received an M.A. in history at Boston College; he was in charge of vocations, the Xaverian Newsletter, and the economy. He was vice-rector and Rector in the formation houses, and from 1962 he became the first Provincial Superior of the USA region, which included (until 1964) also the nascent communities of Mexico.
In February 1968 he began his long pastoral service in the Prelacy of Abaetè do Tocantins (Brazil), which became the diocese of Abaetetuba in 1981. He served the local church as Apostolic Administrator (1968-70), and as Bishop from Jan. 5 1970. He was President of the Northern Region II of the Brazilian Episcopal Conference from 1971 to 1979; Dom Angelo was a member of the Episcopal Commission of Pastoral works (1979-83), and director of Missions; in the last few years, he was also Region II coordinator of Vocation Pastoral work. The first dozen years in the Amazon, Fr. Frosi sought inspiration from tradition: he placed his bet on the Christian formation of his people, knowing that only a faithful Christian is capable of living the Gospel beatitudes in the humility of everyday duties. During those years, he provided for the infrastructures necessary for the meetings, catechesis and formation of the communities.
In the next 15 years, “Dom Angelo”, as he was popularly known, sought a deepening of that catechesis in its various and more mature aspects of communal, biblical, professional and vocational formation. The Christian people under his shepherding slowly began to understand more clearly its vocation as “People of God.” Above all, Dom Angelo, who from the very beginning was helped by many Xaverians, Fathers, Brothers and Sisters, sought to foster the birth of a diocesan clergy. He soon established a Minor Seminary in Abaetetuba and a Major Seminary in Belèm.
Dom Angelo made of his bishop’s motto “Faith and Charity” the summary of interior life. He was most often in the midst of the poor and marginalized, extending his hand to all, seeking to lift out of chronic poverty those most in need of a dwelling and human formation.
To these few and essential notes, we can add what was communicated to us by Fr. Sergio Tassi after the moving funeral of Dom Angelo at Abaetetuba: “In the homily of Msgr. Zico and the final eulogies, it was highlighted the extreme kindness and welcoming spirit of Msgr. Frosi, his delicate manners with everyone, his special attention to the poor, his inability to think bad of anyone, his life of extreme poverty, the esteem of brother Bishops, his total availability for his diocesan priests, and his exceptional care for vocations…”
Msgr. Angelo Frosi was truly faithful to what he wrote in 1947 before his Priesthood Ordination: “In front of the great goals of future days, my worries increase, and it has been awhile that I see them with a particular sense of responsibility. These are high goals, which need to be embraced to the end, with our heroic response to them, day after day. For this reason, knowing my poverty, inability and misery, a sense of bewilderment overcomes me; yet, with the infinite mercy of God and the maternal goodness of Mary, my heart expands, and through their help, I feel ready to do anything, willing to realize in my life the great ideal of holiness found in the Priesthood.”
Today he rests in the Cathedral Church of Abaetetuba, in the midst of his people who daily continue to visit him full of gratitude. He lives in the memory of his flock: the example of his evangelic life continues to touch and mark the hearts of all in the diocese of Abaetetuba and of all who have known him.
