P. GIUSEPPE GALLO
A Parma in Casa Madre, dopo lunga malattia, alle 19.30 del 9 giugno 2016 ha concluso il suo interminabile calvario il P. Giuseppe Gallo.
Era prossimo ai 70 anni, essendo nato a Zianigo (Venezia – Italia) il 27 agosto 1946.
P. Giuseppe proveniva da una famiglia «benedetta da Dio con tante voci e tanti volti (scriveva su MS giugno ’83). Siamo in nove: sei fratelli e tre sorelle. Ho imparato presto a ‘vivere con gli altri’, i miei fratelli. Imparo ancora da un padre ricco di fede e da una madre di raro equilibrio umano». Ricordava pure (Lettera, 11.6.75). «di avere avuto sette o otto anni quando leggendo le imprese delle missioni estere di Parigi, incominciai a sognare….»
Entrò all'Istituto a Vicenza nel 1957; frequentò il ginnasio a Zelarino(60-62), fece il noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli, emise la Prima Professione il 3.10.1963. Seguirono i tre anni di Liceo a Tavernerio (63-66), la Propedeutica a Parma (66-67) e il Prefettato a Cremona e Salerno (67-69). Con i due anni di tirocinio pedagogico si chiude la tappa formativa italiana. Con una più che discreta valutazione dei formatori del Liceo:
« … Ha sempre suscitato buona impressione … abbastanza ben impegnato sia nella vita di pietà, che nello studio e nella vita comunitaria». Forse da ricordare che nella presentazione al noviziato il suo formatore annotò: «Potrebbe preoccupare la salute delicata e una certa tensione nervosa. Credo che una dottrina chiara sull’Amore e fiducia in Dio possa dare tutto quanto richiede questa natura ricca, sensibile: Penso che il Signore abbia riservato ‘solo’ per sè questo apostolino» (12.6.62).
Nel 1972 fu destinato alla Regione degli USA. Studiò teologia a Franklin. Alla fine del secondo anno fu inviato per sei mesi nella Repubblica democratica del Congo per un’esperienza diretta di Missione. Evento di particolare rilievo nella formazione di P. Giuseppe perché di fatto è la sua esperienza ‘conclusa’ di lavoro missionario ad extra. Fu un’immersione nella concretezza della vita missionaria. Trascese la «rarefazione del dato missionario dei testi scolastici, gli abbellimenti di moda di qualche reduce o le più volonterose discussioni di classe. I missionari sono là in carne e ossa, persone come te, uomini con cui devi trovare più di un punto di contatto per lavorare bene e vivere felice nello stesso tempo. […] Mi acclimatai presto al luogo e alla gente. A un certo punto non ero più nella ‘misteriosa terra africana’ ma in un angolo del mondo come qualsiasi altro, dove c’era gente che aveva bisogno di me. […]. C’è ora nella mia mente un’immagine del missionario che è quella dell’uomo intento a portare il messaggio evangelico non tanto se stesso, le sue categorie mentali, le sue conclusioni logiche; è quella dell’uomo che non perde occasione per aiutare gli altri con ogni mezzo, ma è tanto paziente che sa valutare e ascoltare il confratello e non considera tempo sprecato chiacchierare con un vecchio, una donna e perfino con un gruppo di mocciosi; è quella dell’uomo che sa ricominciare a riamare gli altri ogni mattina»(28.5.72).
Fu ordinato presbitero il 26.5.1973 a Milwaukee e, conclusi gli studi teologici, fu impegnato nella promozione vocazionale a Franklin e a Wayne, In questa attività durò circa tre anni. Poi, nel gennaio del ’77 un grido d’aiuto alla DG: «Ho tanta difficoltà a uscire da una situazione davvero strana e assai pesante. Ho difficoltà a concentrarmi e il mio sistema nervoso sembra essersi scombussolato … Che abbia voluto fare di più di ciò che potevo? Che il Signore mi voglia fare capire qualcosa? Io prego spesso e chiedo la grazia di guarire perché voglio davvero fare la sua volontà e essere un santo sacerdote e missionario».
Fu l’inizio del viaggio al calvario. Lungo quarant’anni. Tra alti e bassi: con il buio nella mente e squarci di speranza. Nel 1978 ritornò in Italia per curarsi. Nell’83 la situazione sembrava migliorata al punto che ebbe la destinazione alla Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Partì il 26.8.83 e il 15.12.83 rientrò in Italia. La salute non lo sosteneva più.
Fece parte della comunità di Zelarino (85-92)e poi a Parma. Impegnato a rendersi utile con un po’ di pastorale e con qualche traduzione. Ricordando di tanto in tanto il suo sogno nel cassetto ai Superiori i quali, con tatto e delicatezza gli rispondevano: «Credi che siamo davvero preoccupati della tua salute e del tuo benessere; allo stesso tempo saremmo più contenti di aiutarti a realizzare il tuo ‘sogno’ missionario, che del resto è anche un nostro chiaro dovere, in circostanze favorevoli, appoggiare e incoraggiare…».
P. Giuseppe continuava a sperare; ricordava quanto P. Lucino Piacere soleva ripetergli al tempo del ginnasio: «Non dimenticarti mai di quello che ora ti dico. Crollasse il mondo, sii certo di una cosa: Dio ti ama!».

Fr. Giuseppe Gallo died in the Mother House on 9 June 2016, after a long illness. Born in Zianigo (Venezia – Italy), on 27 August 1946, he was 69 years old.
Fr. Giuseppe hailed from a large family. In June 1983, he wrote in Missionari Saveriani: «We are nine children: six males and three females. I learned early on to ‘get along with others’, thanks to my brothers and sisters. I am still learning from my father who is rich in faith, and from my mother who is endowed with a rare human equilibrium». In a letter dated 11 June 1965, he recalled «reading about the missions when I was seven or eight years old, and I began to dream ….»
He joined the Institute at Vicenza in 1957; he attended high school at Zelarino (1960-62), completed the year of Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on 3 October 1963. This was followed by three years of Lyceum at Tavernerio (1963-66), the Introductory year at Parma (1966-67) and two years as Prefect at Cremona and Salerno (1967-69). His formators at the Lyceum said in their report:
« … He has always given us a good impression … he shows a good level of commitment to the life of piety, study and community life». The report of his formator presenting him for Novitiate said: «His delicate health could be a cause for concern along with a certain degree of nervous tension. I believe that a clear teaching on the Love of God and trust in Him can help this rich and sensitive personality: I believe that the Lord has ‘reserved’ this young seminarian for Himself alone » (12.6.62).
In 1972 he was assigned to the Region of the United States of America, where he studied Theology at Franklin. At the end of the second year he was sent for six months to the Democratic Republic of Congo for a direct missionary experience. It was an event of particular importance in his formation because it was practically his only real experience of mission ad extra. It was an immersion in the concreteness of missionary life.He went beyond the «rarefied atmosphere of the scholastic description of the missions, the embellishment of those returning from the missions and the keen discussions with classmates. The missionaries are flesh and blood persons, just like you, men with whom you have to find something in common in order to work well and live happily at the same time. […] I soon became accustomed to the place and the people. At a certain point I was no longer in the ‘mysterious African land’ but in a corner of the world like any other, where there were people who needed me. […]. I now have an image of the missionary as a man who is determined to bring the Gospel message, and not himself, his own mental categories and logical conclusions; it is the image of a man who loses no opportunity to help others with every means, but who is also so patient that he knows how to appreciate, and listen to, a confrere and does not consider it a waste of time to chat with an elderly person, a woman or even a group of children; it is the image of a man who knows how to begin again and to renew his love for others every morning»(28.5.72).
He was ordained priest on 26 May 1973 at Milwaukee and, upon conclusion of his theology studies, he was assigned to vocation promotion at Franklin and Wayne, He worked for about three years in this activity. In January 1977, he sent a cry of help to the General Direction: «I am finding it very difficult to cope with a situation that is very strange and very distressing. I find it difficult to concentrate and my nervous system seems to be messed up … Perhaps I wanted to do more than I am able? Is the Lord trying to make me understand something? I pray often and I ask for the grace of healing because I truly want to do His will and be a holy priest and missionary».
It was the beginning of his journey to Calvary that lasted forty years between ups and downs, darkness and bursts of hope. In 1978 he returned to Italy for treatment. In 1983 the situation seemed to improve and he was assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He left on 26 August 1983 and returned on 15 December the same year because his health was too poor.
He was a member of the Zelarino community (1985-92) and then Parma. He did what he could in the pastoral ministry and translations. He reminded the Superiors from time to time about his missionary dream and they replied in a tactful and gentle manner: «Believe us when we tell you that we are truly concerned about your health and wellbeing; at the same time, we would be only too happy to help you to fulfill your missionary ‘dream’; it would also be our duty to do so, to support and encourage you, if the circumstances were favorable …».Fr. Giuseppe continued to hope and he remembered how Fr. Lucino Piacere used to say to him during his time in high school: «Never forget what I am telling you now. Even if the world collapses, be certain of one thing: God loves you!».
