Fr. Bartolomeo Gelsomini

Alle 18,45 del 21.2.2008, a Parma in Casa Madre è morto Fr. Bartolomeo Gelsomini. Era stato ricoverato in ospedale, il 13 febbraio, per uno scompenso cardiaco, e dopo una settimana era stato riportato a casa perché la situazione risultava definitivamente compromessa.
Aveva 81 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Ischia di Castro (VT) il 17.11.1926.
Fr. Bartolomeo entrò tra i Saveriani nel dicembre del 1960, a S. Pietro in Vincoli, consigliato da Don Adriano Cervia del Centro Internazionale Pio XII per un Mondo Migliore, che gli scrisse anche una lettera di presentazione: «[Durante un corso di Esercizi a Rocca di Papa] egli mi aveva manifestato il desiderio di lavorare per le missioni; pensava di poter fare qualcosa come lavoratore; io gli proposi invece la vita religiosa. La mia proposta lo trovò pronto fino alla commozione. È un carattere semplice, generoso, che ha mostrato iniziativa nell’aiutare gli altri (è dell’Azione Cattolica da tempo); addetto, credo da sempre, al lavoro dei campi» (15.11.1960).
Uguali apprezzamenti ritornano anche nella presentazione di Fr. Meo alla Prima Professione: «Ha passato qui nove mesi di Probandato e tutto l’anno di Noviziato e, giorno per giorno, ha sempre fatto bene, contento di donarsi continuamente al Signore, senza rimpianti della vita lasciata.
Nella sua vita ha sempre lavorato e faticato; sa che continuerà a lavorare e a faticare anche da religioso, ma ormai sa santificare il suo lavoro e se stesso. La sua “pietà” è seria e sentita: visite, Via crucis, Rosario. Sa fare con frutto la meditazione; ama i S. Voti. Ha una certa quale cultura … Le sue buone doti e capacità, congiunte al dominio che ha di sé, gli danno un certo ascendente sopra gli altri per cui non gli sarà difficile a fare, all’occorrenza, da capo inter pares». Emise la Prima Professione il 2.10.1962.
Dal 1962 al 1970 lavorò in Italia, addetto all’azienda agricola del Noviziato di S. Pietro in Vincoli. Così sono ricordati quegli anni nella presentazione alla Professione Perpetua, emessa il 12.9.1968: «È rimasto sempre nella Casa di S. Pietro in Vincoli, elemento di unione, di buona armonia e di serenità con gli altri fratelli coadiutori e gli stessi novizi che lavoravano con lui. Fedele alle pratiche di pietà e osservante dei nuovi obblighi contratti… Rimarrebbe da augurarsi che si prendesse maggiore responsabilità in seno alla Comunità, ma è piuttosto restio» (7.9.68).
Nel 1970 fu destinato al Burundi: «il Signore sa quanto io desideri partire per le missioni» (4.5.70). Fu aiuto Economo e poi Economo nella comunità della Casa Regionale di Bujumbura. Così lo ricorda, per quel periodo, P. Giovanni Zaltron: « La Casa Regionale si affidava alle sue cure quotidiane. Il largo sorriso di Fr. Meo accattivava gli ospiti Saveriani e altri, in arrivo dall’interno del Paese, dalla nostra confinante Missione del Congo e dall’aeroporto. Gestiva i rifornimenti e il soggiorno, sorvegliava la cucina… Il nostro Fratello spiccava nel quadro della comunità per la sua disponibilità, per il suo buon umore contagioso…» (4.3.08).
Nel 1981 fu espulso dal paese africano e i Superiori lo destinarono alla Casa Madre dove fu impegnato in servizi vari, in particolare nell’assistenza ai malati (81-90). Fu promotore della attività filatelica, realizzata dal 1988 al 2004 con la collaborazione dei confratelli anziani della Casa Madre, e, dal 1996, sacrista solerte e diligente della Cappella dei Martiri.
Fr. Meo merita veramente questo apprezzamento di P. Stefano Coronese (10.3.08) « [Fu] un uomo semplice, dai tratti gentili. Religioso esemplare, senza tanti fronzoli. Dedito alla preghiera e alla meditazione con convinzione. Serio e faceto insieme. Ordinato e preciso nelle sue cose. Paziente e sollecito, servizievole e giudizioso».

Br. Bartolomeo Gelsomini died in the Mother House, Parma, on Feb. 21 2008. He had been admitted to the hospital on Feb. 13 suffering from cardiac decompensation and was sent home one week later when nothing more could be done for him.
Born in Ischia di Castro (Viterbo), on Nov. 17 1926, he was 81 years old.
Br. Bartolomeo joined the Xaverians in December 1960, at S. Pietro in Vincoli, on the advice of Fr. Adriano Cervia of the Centro Internazionale Pio XII per un Mondo Migliore, who also wrote him a letter of presentation: “During a Spiritual Retreat at Rocca di Papa, he told me about his desire to work for the missions; he thought he could do something as a simple worker; instead, I suggested religious life. My suggestion met with an almost moving readiness on his part. He is a simple and generous man who has shown initiative in helping others (he has been a member of the Catholic Action for some time); as far as I know, he has always worked in the fields.” (Nov. 15, 1960).
Similar words of praise also appear in the presentation of Br. Meo to the First Profession: “He has spent nine months here in Probandato and the entire year of Novitiate, and day after day, he has always done well, happy to give himself uninterruptedly to the Lord, without any regrets about the life he has left behind. He has always been a hard worker and he knows that he shall continue to work hard as religious, but he possesses the ability to sanctify his work and himself. His ‘devotion’ is serious and deeply felt: visits to the Blessed Sacrament, Via Crucis, Rosary. He meditates well and loves the Vows. He possesses a certain degree of culture… His good qualities and capabilities, combined with his self-control, give him a certain influence over the others and, if necessary, this shall enable him to be first among equals without any difficulty.” He made his First Profession on Oct. 2, 1962.
From 1962 until 1970 he worked in the farm of the Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli. His presentation to Final Profession, which he made on Sept. 12 1968, thus referred to those years: “He has always been a promoter of unity, harmony and serenity with the other brothers and the novices who work with him. He has been faithful to devotional practices and the new obligations he has contracted… It would be good if he took a greater responsibility within the Community, but he is rather reluctant to do so.” (Sept. 7, 1968).
In 1970 he was assigned to Burundi: “The Lord knows how much I desire to leave for the missions” (May 4 1970). He worked as assistant Treasurer and then Treasurer in the community of the Regional House in Bujumbura. Fr. Giovanni Zaltron thus remembers him during that period: “The Regional House was entrusted to his care. His broad smile won over the Xaverian guests and others who arrived from within the country, our mission in the Congo and from the airport. He looked after the supplies and the kitchen… he distinguished himself in the community for his availability and his contagious good spirits…” (March 4, 2008).
In 1981 he was expelled from Burundi and the Superiors assigned him to various services in the Mother House, especially assistance to the sick (1`981-90). He promoted the philatelic activity with the collaboration of the elderly confreres of the Mother House (1988-2004) and, from 1996, he was the industrious and diligent sacristan of the Chapel of the Martyrs.
Br. Meo truly deserves the words of praise expressed by Fr. Stefano Coronese (March 10, 2008): “He was a simple and gentle person. An exemplary religious without any frills. He was truly dedicated to prayer and meditation. He was both serious and witty, neat and precise, patient and solicitous, helpful and sensible.”
