P. Vincenzo Mitidieri

L’ 11 febbraio 2005, intorno alle 11.25, a Parma è morto il P. Vincenzo Mitidieri. Trasferito da Salerno a Parma il 17 gennaio, era stato immediatamente ricoverato all’ospedale cittadino per seri problemi epatici aggravati, negli ultimi giorni, da complicazioni polmonari.
P. Vincenzo aveva quasi 73 anni, essendo nato a Nova Siri (Matera) il 12 maggio 1932.
Entrò tra i Saveriani nel 1943 a Grumone. Infuriava la seconda guerra mondiale e per questo la comunità si rifugiò a Gromo S. Marino dove P. Vincenzo frequentò (43-45) la preparatoria e la prima media. Ritornato con la comunità a Grumone nel 45, completò le medie e il ginnasio. Nel 1949 passò a S. Pietro in Vincoli per il Noviziato e il 12.9.1950 emise la Prima Professione. Fu quindi a Desio per il liceo (50-53) e, dopo l’anno di prefettato a Massa Lucana (53-54), a Piacenza per la Teologia (54-58). Fu ordinato presbitero il 31.5.1958.
Uscì dalla teologia con la determinazione di essere “un Sacerdote Saveriano santo sul serio, di quelli che non fanno le boccacce o le moine, ma si danno senza riserva” (11.5.58). Ma anche, incoraggiato dal P. Bonardi, con un sogno: essere missionario tra i Kubu di Sumatra.
Rimase invece in Italia per la formazione e dopo tre anni densi di ore di scuola, di ministero e di attività educative a Massa Lucana (58-59) e ad Ancona (59-61), fu destinato al Brasile Sud.
P. Vincenzo accolse la destinazione come “una grazia specialissima del Signore che mi permetterà una più completa dedizione a Lui anche in tante cose che qui ci sembrano indispensabili”(20.2.61).
Lavorò per un paio d’anni a Laranjeiras do Sul nel Seminario e nella pastorale e dal 1964 al 1969 in Amazzonia ad Abaetetuba, parroco della cattedrale e insegnante nel seminario minore. Veramente contento del compito affidatogli perché “è proprio ‘nostro’: piantare la chiesa: spiritualmente ove è appena nata, e materialmente ove non c’è neppure una croce nel vasto scenario dell’interiore del municipio di Abaeté” (27.2.64). Era a suo agio con le novità del Concilio Vaticano. Si rivelò anche un buon realizzatore: a lui si deve, tra l’altro, la fondazione (1966) del Collegio S. Francisco Xavier che conta attualmente quasi tremila alunni; il Centro di Pastorale e la Scuola di arti e mestieri.
Nel 1969 rientrò in Italia. Impegnato dapprima nell’animazione missionaria (è lui l’ideatore del sussidio Orientamenti Giovanili Missionari), fu successivamente: Consigliere Regionale (71-75); Rettore di Desio (72-78) con la vendita della Villa Tittoni e la costruzione della nuova casa con “ambienti funzionali, accoglienti e modesti”; Rettore dello CSAM (78-82) negli anni caldi del ripensamento della missione, delle metodologie e delle finalità; con il passaggio, a livello di stampe saveriane, da Fede e civiltà a Missione oggi.
Nel 1983 tornò volentieri in Brasile Sud dove ricoprì diversi incarichi: Consigliere ed Economo Regionale, Superiore Regionale (91-94). Visse quegli anni “con spirito di generosità, di zelo, di amore non solo per il popolo brasiliano, ma anche per i confratelli e la famiglia Saveriana” (P. Trevisan, 15.11.96). Si impegnò, come economo, a sistemare logisticamente le comunità del liceo, del noviziato e della teologia e, come Regionale, a favorire la presenza dei saveriani tra i più sfortunati. Contento di poter passare i fine settimana nelle sterminate favelas di S. Paolo.
Per motivi di salute nel 1997 fece ritorno in Italia. Accettò il servizio di economo nella comunità di Salerno, grato al Signore “perché mi dà ancora la forza di servire, sia pure in forma ridotta, i miei confratelli che sono qui con me e qualche altro che si trova in giro per il mondo". (Pasqua 2002).
Come sempre, amico e apprezzato da quanti incontrava, come gli scrisse il P. F. Cavallo il 30.1.05: “la tua sola presenza – garbata, serena, lineare, con quel tocco di signorilità che ti distingue… – è il bene che non vorremmo perdere”.
Il Signore lo accolga nella festa del suo Regno.

Fr. Vincenzo Mitidieri died in Parma, on Feb. 11 2005, shortly before midday. On Jan. 17 he had been taken to Parma from Salerno and immediately admitted to hospital with serious liver problems, which had been made worse by pulmonary complications. Born at Nova Siri (Matera, Italy) on May 12 1932, Fr. Vincenzo was 72 years old.
He joined the Xaverians at Grumone in 1943. The World War II was being fought and the community took refuge in Gromo S. Marino, where Fr. Vincenzo finished primary school and completed the first year of secondary school (1943-45). He returned to Grumone with the community in 1945 and completed the secondary school program. In 1949 he moved to S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate and made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1950. He was sent to Desio for liceo (1950-53) and, after serving as prefect for a year at Massa Lucana (1953-54), he moved to Piacenza for Theology (1954-58). He was ordained priest on May 31 1958. He finished Theology with the determination to be “a truly holy Xaverian priest, one who neither grimaces nor simpers, one who gives of himself without reserve” (May 11 1958). With the encouragement of Fr. Bonardi, he also dreamt of missionary work among the Kubu of Sumatra.
Instead, he remained in Italy, working in formation and, after three intense years of teaching, ministry and educational activities at Massa Lucana (1958-59) and Ancona (1959-61), he was assigned to South Brazil. Fr. Vincenzo welcomed his assignment as “a very special grace from God that allows me to dedicate myself more completely to Him” (Feb. 20 1961). He worked for a couple of years at Laranjeiras do Sul in the seminary and in pastoral activity. The period 1964-69 saw him at Abaetetuba in the Amazons, where he was parish priest of the Cathedral and teacher in the minor seminary. He was truly content with the work entrusted to him because, in his own words, “it was a task that could be described as typically ‘Xaverian’: to plant the Church, spiritually in those places where it has just been born, and materially in those places where there isn’t even a cross in the vast inner territory of the municipality of Abaetè.” (Feb. 27 1964). He felt at ease with the novelties introduced by Vatican II. He also proved to be a good achiever in other areas: among other things, he founded the St. Francis Xavier School (1966), which currently has almost 3,000 students, the Pastoral Center, and the school of arts and crafts.
He returned to Italy in 1969. He worked first of all in mission education (he invented the “Orientamenti Giovanili Missionari”). Subsequently he was Regional Councilor (1971-75); Rector at Desio (1972-78) during the time when the Villa Tittoni was sold and the construction of a new house, which was “more functional, welcoming and modest”; Rector of the CSAM (1978-82) during the years of rethinking the mission, methods, and goals; he also witnessed the move from “Fede e Civiltà” to “Missione Oggi.”
In 1983 he eagerly returned to South Brazil where he had various roles: Regional Council, Regional Administrator before becoming Regional Superior (1991-94). He lived these years “with a spirit of generosity, zeal and love, not only for the Brazilian people, but also for the confreres and the Xaverian family” (Fr. Trevisan, Nov. 15 1996). During his time as administrator, he carried out a better logistic organization of the high school, novitiate and theology and, as Regional Superior, he promoted the presence of the Xaverians among the most deprived people. He was very happy to spend weekends in the immense favelas of Sao Paulo.
He returned to Italy in 1997 for health reasons. He served as administrator in the community of Salerno, and expressed his gratitude to the Lord “because he still gives me the strength to serve, even partially, my confreres here and others who are scattered around the world.” (Easter 2002) He was a friendly man and appreciated by all those who met him. Fr. F. Cavallo wrote to him on Jan. 30 2005: “your presence alone – polite, serene, and straightforward, with that touch of refinement that distinguishes you – is a blessing that we would never like to lose.” May he rest in peace.
