(1939 - 2021)
Sabato 15 maggio 2021, alle ore 19.30, nella Casa Madre di Parma, è deceduto nel sonno il nostro confratello p. Gismondo Caponi sx. Ultimamente era gravemente peggiorato al punto da essere alimentato con sondino. P. Gismondo aveva 81 anni essendo nato il 24 agosto 1939 a Pierosara di Genga (provincia di Ancona e diocesi di Fabriano).
All’età di undici anni, il giovane Gismondo entra nella casa Saveriana di Poggio San Marcello (Ancona) dove termina la scuola elementare. In seguito va ad Ancona per la scuola media inferiore (1952-1955) e, poi, a Zelarino per il ginnasio (1955-1957). Nel 1957 il giovane Gismondo va a San Pietro in Vincoli dove frequenta l’anno di noviziato.
Dopo la Prima Professione religiosa-missionaria (fatta il 15.09.1958 a S. Pietro in Vincoli), il giovane Gismondo continua con il consueto iter scolastico-formativo: liceo a Desio (1958-1961), propedeutica a Parma (1961-1962), prefettato a Vicenza (1962-1963) e teologia a Parma (1963-1967).
Viene ordinato Presbitero a Parma il 16.10.1966.
Dopo aver terminato gli studi teologici, p. Gismondo viene destinato a Cagliari come promotore vocazionale (1967-1969). Dopo aver frequentato due anni di studio della lingua inglese, prima a Cardross e poi a Glasgow (1969-1971), nel 1971 viene destinato alla Sierra Leone.
Dopo aver studiato, per qualche mese, la lingua Temne a Makeni, p. Gismondo viene destinato come viceparroco a Lungi (1972-1974); in seguito va a Mange-Bureh come parroco (1974-1976) e nuovamente a Lungi come parroco e cappellano dell’Aeroporto (1976-1978).
Nel 1978 p. Gismondo viene richiamato in Europa per avvicendamento e viene destinato alla circoscrizione della Gran Bretagna. Qui svolge il ruolo di aiuto economo a Coatbridge (1978-1979) e di economo locale a Glasgow (1979-1984).
Dopo qualche mese di riposo in Italia, nel gennaio 1985, p. Gismondo riparte per la Sierra Leone, impegnato a Lungi prima come viceparroco (1985-1988) e successivamente come parroco (1988-1991). Dopo un anno di aggiornamento presso il Pontificio Istituto di Studi Arabo-Islamici di Roma (1991-1992), viene destinato nuovamente alla Gran Bretagna dove svolge il servizio di economo a Londra-Holden Road (1992-1994). A Londra si iscrive alla School of Oriental and African Studies, ma senza concludere il corso. Dal 1994 al 1995 è a Coatbridge impegnato nel ministero.
Nel 1995 p. Gismondo viene destinato alla Regione italiana. Dopo un anno di ministero a San Pietro in Vincoli (1995-1996), viene destinato definitivamente alla Casa Madre dove, oltre al ministero, svolge in modo servizievole il lavoro in portineria. Negli ultimi anni si trovava in cura.
Alla domanda rivoltagli dalla redazione del giornale della sua Diocesi di Fabriano nel gennaio del 1985 sul perché della sua predilezione per i fratelli mussulmani, p. Gismondo rispose: “Già studente di Teologia mi affascinò la possibilità di vivere la missione in un ambiente mussulmano. Li sento veramente miei fratelli. Non sono fanatici come si pensa. È gente che crede sul serio in Dio. Pregano frequentemente e lo fanno con vera convinzione. Un giorno, un amico mussulmano malato di tumore, mi ha detto: «se morissi, vorrei entrare nel tuo Paradiso, per stare sempre con te, quando arriverai anche tu».” (L’Azione, giornale della Diocesi di Fabriano, 5 gennaio 1985).
Il 15 maggio 2021 p. Gismondo viene portato dagli Angeli in Paradiso per partecipare della vita eterna.

Rev. Fr. Gismondo Caponi died in his sleep on May 15th, 2021. Lately, the health of Fr. Caponi had deteriorated very rapidly. He was born on August 24th, 1939 in Pierosara di Genga (Province of Ancona and Diocese of Fabriano), and was 81 years old.
At the age of eleven, young Gismondo entered the Xaverian Missionary House of Poggio San Marcello. Later he went to the Xaverian Missionary House of Ancona and continued in the Xaverian House of Zelarino (Venice), completing his High School studies (1957). In the Fall of 1957, Gismondo entered the Xaverian Missionary House of San Pietro in Vincoli, where he attended the year of Novitiate.
After his first Religious Missionary Profession, celebrated on September 15th, 1958, Gismondo continued with the usual scholastic-formation process: College years in the city of Desio (1958-1961), Propedeutics in Parma (1861-1962), Prefect of Students in Vicenza (1962-1963) and Theology Studies in the city of Parma (1963-1967).
On October 16th, 1966, Gismondo was ordained priest in Parma.
Having finished with his Theological curriculum, Fr. Gismondo was assigned to serve as Vocation Animator in the Xaverian Missionary House of Cagliari (1967-1969). After having spent two years in the study of the English Language, first in Cardross and then in Glasgow (1969-1971), Fr. Gismondo Caponi was assigned for mission ministry to Sierra Leone (1971).
After few months spent in the study of the Temne Local Language in the city of Makeni, Fr. Gismondo was named Assistant Parish Priest in Lungi (1972-1974); later, he went to Mange-Bureh as Parish Priest (1974-1976), and again to Lungi as Parish Priest and Chaplain of the Airport (1976-1978).
In the year 1978, Fr. Gismondo was recalled to Europe to minister in various services of the Congregation. First, he was in Great Britain. There he was Treasurer of the Xaverian Community in Coatbridge (1978-1979), then, Treasurer in Glasgow (1979-1984).
After few months of rest in Italy, in January 1985, Fr. Gismondo returned to Sierra Leone. He ministered as Assistant Parish Priest in Lungi (1985-1988) and, later, as its Parish Priest (1988-1991). After a whole year spent in Rome for renewal and updating, studying at the Pontifical Institute of Arabic-Islamic Studies (1991-1992), Fr. Caponi was assigned again to Great Britain, where he served as Treasurer at the Xaverian Missionary House in London – Holden Road (1992-1994). While in London, Fr. Gismondo enrolled in the School of Oriental and African Studies. He did not finish the course. From 1994 to 1995, Fr. Gismondo was engaged in ministry in the Xaverian House of Coatbridge.
In 1995, Fr. Gismondo was assigned to the Xaverian Region of Italy. After one year of service and ministry in the House of San Pietro in Vincoli (1995-1996), Fr. Caponi was assigned to the Xaverian Mother House in Parma. There, in addition to pastoral ministry, he offered various services to the House and to the Community. He was very helpful, hardworking and very responsible. In recent years, Fr. Gismondo was in need of help and treatment for his health problems.
To the question addressed to him by the editorial staff of the Newspaper of his Diocese of Fabriano in January 1985 on the reason for his predilection for his Muslim brothers, Fr. Gismondo replied:
“Already as a student of Theology, I was fascinated by the possibility of living my mission service in a Muslim environment. I really feel they are my brothers. They are not as fanatical as some seem to think they are. They are people who seriously believe in God. They pray frequently and do so with true conviction. One day, a Muslim friend, who was suffering from cancer, told me: “If I died, I would like to enter your Paradise, to be always with you, when you arrive too.” (L’Azione, newspaper of the Diocese of Fabriano, January 5th, 1985).
On May 15th, 2021, Fr. Gismondo was taken by the Angels to Heaven to participate in eternal life.
