Alle ore 07.40 del 9.12.1996, a Parma nella casa di cura “Piccole Figlie”, il Signore ha chiamato a Sé Fr. Luigi Spera. Il fratello era ricoverato da circa una settimana per cirrosi epatica complicata da esiti tumorali e, il giorno 8.12.96, si era irrimediabilmente aggravato per il sopraggiungere di un blocco renale. Aveva quasi ottantadue anni, essendo nato a Spino d’Adda (CR) l’11.2.1915.
Fr. Luigi entrò tra i Saveriani a Parma nel luglio del 1935, così presentato dal suo arciprete: “Il giovane è sempre stato e lo è tuttora, occupato come operaio in una segheria... è veramente esemplare e animato da tale spirito di apostolato da essere il braccio destro del mio coadiutore nella guida del Circolo Giovanile Cattolico, in qualità di direttore degli aspiranti”.
Il 12 settembre 1937, dopo l’anno di Noviziato, emise, a S. Pietro in Vincoli, la prima Professione.
Ebbe quindi inizio, per il giovane fratello missionario, un periodo di frequenti spostamenti che lo portarono a Roma (38-39), Parma (39-40), Poggio S. Marcello (40-41), Grumone (41-42), Vicenza (42-45), Grumone (45-46), Parma (46-47), dove fu, successivamente: falegname, cuoco, aiuto economo, tipografo
Nell’ottobre 1947 fu mandato a Desio come cuoco della comunità dei liceisti che iniziava allora la sua trentennale presenza nella monumentale Villa Tittoni. Nel 1954 fu a Macomer con incarichi vari. L’anno successivo però, per incompatibilità di carattere con il Rettore della comunità, ottenne di essere cambiato e in quella circostanza il P. Pietro Garbero gli scrisse: “Ho apprezzato la sobrietà con cui mi ha scritto, senza fare commenti, e senza venire meno alla carità e anche per questo il Signore la benedirà”.
Fu destinato alla Casa di Ancona, dove Fr. Luigi, per 9 anni, fu addetto alla casa e incaricato delle compere e della direzione della fattoria.
Nel 1964 fece ritorno a Desio e vi rimase per quasi trent’anni, dapprima come portinaio e poi come vice-economo della comunità, “contento - come si esprimeva in una lettera non datata al P. Amatore Dagnino - di cooperare sia pure negli uffici più umili alla salvezza dei miei fratelli nello stato in cui il buon Dio mi ha posto, non desiderando altro”.
Nel 1993 Fr. Luigi fu trasferito a Parma e il 9.12 u.s fu chiamato là dove “... triunfa, sotto l’alto Filio/ di Dio e di Maria, di sua vittoria/ e con l’antico e col nuovo concilio/, colui che tien le chiavi di tal gloria” (Paradiso, XXIII, 136-139) e che certamente avrà spalancato le porte del Paradiso a chi per tanti anni, ai confratelli e a quanti chiedevano di entrare, aveva aperto le porte delle case saveriane.

Br. Luigi Spera died at 7:40am of Dec. 9 1996 in Parma, at the nursing home of the ìPiccole Figlieî, of tumor and kidney failure. He was 81 years old, born at Spino díAdda (Cremona) on Feb. 11 1915.
Br. Luigi entered the Xaverians at Parma in July 1935, introduced by his pastor with these words: The youth has been employed by a sawing factoryÖ heís truly exemplary, animated by a great spirit of apostolate, so much that heís the right hand man to my assistant, guiding the Catholic Youth Group as director of aspirants.
Br. Luigi professed Religious Missionary Vows at S. Pietro in Vincoli at the end of his Novitiate, on Sept. 12 1937. Since then, he worked in many houses in Italy: Rome (1938-39), Parma (1939-40), Poggio S. Marcello (1940-41), Grumone (1941-42), Vicenza (1942-45), Grumone (1945-46), Parma (1946-47) as carpenter, cook, assistant to the Treasurer, and printer.
Fr. Zaltron remembers the days of Novitiate: "For me he represented the most austere person one could imagine, under those vestments. He would not react, he would not break the rule of silence, he would not show a smile." And Fr. V. Mitidieri recalls Grumone: "He impressed me for his love for flowers and plants. I was only 11 years old, assigned to help him. I was not allowed to use the scissors or the ax. All that I did was weed, and he would teach me patiently the difference between flowers and weeds." As the General Direction was looking for an opening in Africa, Br. Spera wrote to the Superior General: "Most Rev. Father, if you need the presence of a Brother to assist the Priests who would probably leave for the next mission of Capo Verde Islands, I am ready. As I plead with you to keep this ardent wish in your mind, I pray the Most August Trinity to give you all the needed graces to accomplish well your many occupations." (Sept. 24 1946)
In 1964 Br. Luigi was in Desio, happy to cooperate even in small services to the salvation of my brothers in this state the good Lord placed me, desiring nothing else. (Letter to Fr. Amatore Dagnino). He spent 30 years at Desio, between Villa Tittoni (1964-76) and the new building (1977-83). "He was in charge of daily shopping, and was tight and austere; nothing would go to waste, even if he had to eat leftovers for many days. He made himself available to go to the Post Office, to work in the garden, to answer the phone, etc. He was ever respectful of others, confreres and students, never saying anything negative about them. Whenever he did not like some ideas or behaviors, he would just saying his proverbial adjective: ingenuous." (Fr. V. Mitidieri)
He was also at Macomer in 1954 and spent about 9 years at the house in Ancona, as the one in charge of the farm and grocery shopping. In 1993, he moved to Parma until the day of his death.
"He was coherent with the commitments of religious and community life. He would often remark and appreciate to see the fathers and the students visit the Blessed Sacrament." (Fr.
