P. Bruno Spina

Il 6 luglio 2008, verso le 09,15, in Casa Madre è morto il P. Bruno Spina. Era in cura a Parma dal giugno 2004, e da una ventina di giorni le sue condizioni erano andate rapidamente peggiorando.
Aveva 72 anni compiuti essendo nato il 6.11.1935 a Muravera (Cagliari-Italia).
P. Bruno entrò tra i Saveriani a Tortolì nell’ottobre 1948: «Sono stati i miei genitori a trovarmi il posto – scriveva l’8.3.53 – io ho accettato volentieri anzi devo dire quasi con gioia…». Difatti percorse lodevolmente le tappe successive dell’iter formativo saveriano. Frequentata la terza media a Macomer dove si era trasferita la comunità degli aspiranti saveriani della Sardegna, il P. Bruno fu successivamente a Zelarino per il Ginnasio (51-5); a S. Pietro in Vincoli per il Noviziato (53-54); a Desio per il Liceo (54-57); a Zelarino per il Prefettato (57-58); a Parma per la Teologia (58-62). E a Parma fu ordinato Presbitero il 15.10.1961, così presentato dal suo Rettore: «Buono. Riservato per temperamento. Si impegna in tutto con serietà e costanza. Bene negli studi» (10.5.60).
Durante l’ultimo anno di teologia, in prossimità della prima destinazione scrisse al Superiore Generale la sua disponibilità e le sue preferenze: «Se dovessi avanzare delle preferenze, queste sarebbero per l’Indonesia o per il Congo … faccia Lei, Padre, quello che crederà meglio nei miei riguardi» (23.10.61).
Fu destinato all’Indonesia e il 24 agosto 1962 giunse nella comunità di Padang. Dopo lo studio dell’Indonesiano iniziò il suo servizio pastorale a Sikakap nelle Mentawai (63-68): «ho preso in mano tutto il lavoro apostolico, al centro e fuori… in otto mesi ho avuto la gioia di visitare ben due volte i 27 villaggi cristiani… in ogni villaggio abbiamo aperto una piccola scuola elementare nella quale i ragazzi imparano a leggere e a scrivere, con grande vantaggio per lo studio del catechismo» (6.7.66).
Dal 68 al 70 fu Rettore del Seminario di Padang e nell’anno accademico 70-71 frequentò Missiologia alla Gregoriana di Roma. Nel 1971 ritornò a lavorare nelle Mentawai a Sikakap (71-75). Riprese le visite ai villaggi; si dedicò alla pubblicazione in mentawaiano del lezionario festivo, di catechismi, e del libro ufficiale di preghiera; si impegnò pure nella formazione di catechisti. Furono anni fruttuosi ma anche di fatica e di tribolazione.
Nel 75-76 fu a Roma dove frequentò il secondo anno di missiologia alla Gregoriana, conseguendo la licenza. Il suo progetto, scrisse il 14.12.79, era quello di studiare «tutti gli aspetti della cultura mentawaiana … La mia ambizione è di servirmene per un nuovo catechismo mentawaiano con orientamento antropologico: questa cultura ha tanti elementi sfruttabili per una buona catechesi».
L’obbedienza lo volle in un altro campo di lavoro. Non più nelle Mentawai ma a Jakarta, la metropoli capitale, nella parrocchia del Toasebio. Fu viceparroco dal 76 all’80, impegnato soprattutto con i gruppi biblici.
Nel 1980 fu chiamato a Padang: Presidente della Caritas diocesana, Procuratore diocesano e aiutante nella parrocchia della Cattedrale. «Ora sono incaricato dei problemi che riguardano lo sviluppo. Sogno strade e pozzi, scuole e villaggi, piccole casette con acqua e luce… Cerchiamo in mille modi di rendere autosufficienti le persone…» (Missionari Saveriani, dicembre ‘85).
L’ultimo suo sogno fu la pranoterapia: «non si tratta di voler diventare pranoterapeuti, ma bensì conoscere la pranoterapia ed avere le mani pronte per sapere intervenire in qualsiasi momento per curare se stessi e, occorrendo, anche altre persone» (Lett. 26.12.98).
Dal 2003 l’ultima, difficile e misteriosa tappa della vita di P. Bruno: il suo inesorabile sprofondare nell’abisso dell’assenza, dell’incomunicabilità.
Certamente gli è stato vicino il Signore fedele e misericordioso che, come ai discepoli testimoni della Trasfigurazione, alla fine gli ha detto: «Alzati e non temere».

Fr. Bruno Spina died in the Mother House on the morning of July 6 2008. He had been in nursing care in Parma since June 2004 and his health had deteriorated rapidly during the last 20 days of his life.
Born in Muravera (Cagliari) on Nov. 6 1935, he was 72 years old.
Bruno joined the Xaverians in Tortolì in Oct. 1948. On March 8 1953 he wrote: «My parents found me a place and I accepted willingly, actually I should say, almost joyfully…». He commendably completed the various stages of the Xaverian formation program. After frequenting the third year of high school in Macomer, where the Xaverian aspirants’ community of Sardinia had been transferred, Bruno was subsequently in Zelarino for Ginnasio (1951-55), S. Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate (1953-54), Desio for Liceo (1954-57), Zelarino as Prefect (1957-58) and Parma for Theology (1958-62). He was ordained priest in Parma on Oct. 15 1961 and his Rector said in his report: «He is a good man and reserved by nature. He shows dedication and does everything with seriousness and constancy. He performs well in his studies» (May 10, 1960).
During the last year of Theology, in view of his first assignment to the missions, he wrote to the Superior General expressing his availability and preferences: «If I were to express any preferences, I would choose Indonesia or the Congo… but do as you think best with me» (Oct. 23 1961).
He was assigned to Indonesia and on Aug. 24 1962 he joined the community of Padang. After the study of the Indonesian language, he began his pastoral service at Sikakap in the Mentawai (1963-68): «I have taken on all the pastoral work, in the center and beyond… in eight months I have had the joy of visiting the 27 Christian villages twice… in every village we opened a small primary school in which the children learn to read and write, to the great advantage of the study of the catechism» (July 6, 1966).
From 1968 until 1970 he was Rector of the Seminary of Padang. In the 1970-71 academic year, he attended a Missiology course at the Gregorian University, Rome. In 1971 he returned to work in the Mentawai at Sikakap (1971-75). He began to visit the villages again; he dedicated time and energy to publishing the festive lectionary, catechisms and the official prayer book in the language of the Mentawai; he also dedicated himself to the formation of catechists. These were fruitful years, but also ones of difficulty and suffering.
In 1975-76, he obtained the Masters in Missiology after attending the second year of the course at the Gregorian University in Rome. His project was to study «all the aspects of the Mentawaian culture… My ambition is to make use of this for a new Mentawaian catechism with an anthropological orientation: this culture has many workable elements for a good catechesis» (Dec. 12, 1979).
Obedience called him to another field of work, no longer in the Mentawai, but at Jakarta, the capital city, in the parish of Toasebio. He was assistant priest from 1976 until 1980 and worked especially with the Bible groups.
In 1980 he was called to Padang: he served as President of the Diocesan Caritas, Diocesan procurator and assistant in the Cathedral parish. «I am now in charge of problems that concern development. I dream of roads and wells, schools and villages, small houses with water and light… We try in thousands of ways to make people self-sufficient…» (Missionari Saveriani, Dec. 1985).
His last dream was pranotheraphy: «it is not about wanting to become a pranotherapist [alternative medicine], but of studying pranotherapy and be able to intervene at any moment to take care of myself and, if necessary, other people too» (Letter of Dec. 26, 1998).
From 2003 onwards, he began the last, difficult and mysterious stage of his life, which took the form of an unrelenting descent into the depths of absence and non-communicability. Undoubtedly, he was accompanied by the faithful and merciful Lord who, just as he said to the disciples who witnessed the Transfiguration, also said to Fr. Bruno at the end: «Rise, do not be afraid!».
