Alle 20,45 del 3 settembre 2003, a Parma, è morto il P. Secondo Tomaselli. Era in cura dal 1999 e da due anni era afflitto da una grave forma di scompenso epatico.
Era prossimo agli 85 anni, essendo nato a Castello di Zeri (Massa-Carrara) il 31 ottobre 1918.
L’iter scolastico e formativo del P. Secondo, nel periodo delle medie, si svolse dapprima nel collegio salesiano di S. Paolo a La Spezia e quindi, dopo un anno, nel Seminario di Pontremoli.
Alla fine del ginnasio chiese di entrare tra i Salesiani: desiderava prendere il posto di due loro missionari uccisi dai Kivaros nel Mato Grosso (Brasile). Ma i quattro anni di assistenza nei collegi, previsti dal curricolo formativo salesiano, impressionarono il Direttore Spirituale che preferì indirizzare il P. Secondo dai Missionari Saveriani. Così nel novembre del 1937 entrò nella casa del Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli dove il 24/11/1938 emise la prima professione. Passò quindi a Parma per il Liceo e, dopo l’anno di prefettato a Vicenza (41-42), per la Teologia. A Parma, nella cappella dell’Istituto fu ordinato presbitero il 29.6.1946.
Uscì dalla Teologia profondamente convinto e orientato: “Ormai ho scelto e per sempre: a Dio piacendo, sarò anch’io uno di quelli che non hanno quaggiù altro ideale che di procurare la maggior gloria di Dio e applicare ai fratelli i frutti della Redenzione" (Lett. 5.4.46).
I Superiori lo destinarono al servizio della formazione nelle Case Apostoliche: fu Direttore Spirituale a Cremona, Pedrengo, Zelarino (48-52; 54-58) e Desio (52-54). Di quelli anni P. Secondo ripeteva frequentemente che furono “uno dei periodi più belli della mia vita saveriana… il fervore nella preghiera [degli studenti], la mortificazione, l’entusiasmo per le Missioni, mi hanno sempre impegnato a non essere da meno dei miei diretti” (Lett. 11.11.79). Testimonia chi lo ha conosciuto in quegli anni: “Si può forse ritenere che, con P. Tomaselli, sia incominciata, in casa nostra, una vera direzione spirituale, esercitata, direi, quasi perfettamente … Aveva, anche per temperamento, una singolare inclinazione e una capacità singolare di mettersi alla discrezione e di saper ascoltare… era veramente un artista dell’ascolto” (P. A. Dagnino).
Nel 1958 partì con il primo gruppo di Saveriani destinati alla nuova missione del Congo. Lavorò a Kiringye dove lo sorprese la ribellione mulelista dei Simbas e dove, a imitazione del Buon Pastore, volle e ottenne di rimanere per essere una presenza di speranza e per curare i feriti dell’una e dell’altra parte. Uscì da quella esperienza (1964) fisicamente e moralmente stremato. Per questo fu richiamato in patria. Seguirono due anni di aggiornamento a Bruxelles (66-68), poi il servizio della Direzione Spirituale a Cremona e ancora un periodo di cura a Parma.
Nel 1972 poté ritornare in Congo e, dopo un anno trascorso a Baraka, fu vice-parroco della Cattedrale a Uvira (73-84) e quindi responsabile del santuario mariano di Kavimvira (84-88).
L’attività del P. Secondo spaziò dalla iniziazione dei catecumeni e dalla cura dei cristiani, alla promozione umana e alle opere di misericordia; dalla pastorale, alla scuola e all’aiuto, sempre discreto, a quanti si rivolgevano a lui: “non ho mai avuto l’ambizione di passare per uno quotato; ma quella di rendermi il più possibile utile a tutti coloro che posso incontrare nel mio apostolato missionario, quella sì che l’ho avuta e l’ho tuttora…” (29.7.67).
Nel 1988 rientrò in Italia: lavorò, dedicandosi specialmente al ministero della Riconciliazione, a Parma e quindi a Pegli e, infine, dal 1999 di nuovo a Parma.
Un’esistenza, quella del P. Secondo, illuminata da una fede gioiosa, come scriveva nella lettera del 24.11.98, facendo sua la Colletta della 33ª Domenica del Tempo Ordinario: “Il tuo aiuto, Signore, mi renda sempre lieto nel tuo servizio, perché solo nella dedizione a te, fonte di ogni bene, posso avere felicità piena e duratura”.
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo paradiso, nel posto che gli ha preparato.

Fr. Secondo Tomaselli died in Parma, on Sept. 3 2003, at 8:45pm. He had been in nursing care since 1999 and for the last two years of his life suffered from a form of liver imbalance.
Born in Castello di Zeri (Massa-Carrara) on Oct. 31 1918, he was almost 85 years old.
In his early formative years, he attended the Salesian school of S. Paolo in La Spezia and, thereafter, the Seminary at Pontremoli. At the end of High School, he asked to join the Salesians: he wanted to take the place of two of their missionaries who had been killed by the Kivaros in Mato Grosso, Brazil. However, the four years of prefectship in the colleges, which were part of the Salesian formation curriculum, convinced his Spiritual Director to send him instead to the Xaverian Missionaries. Thus, in November 1937, he entered the Novitiate House of S. Pietro in Vincoli where he made his First Profession on Nov. 24, 1938; he then moved to Parma for Liceo. He spent the year 1941-42 in Vicenza as prefect and then returned to Parma for Theology; he was ordained priest there, in the chapel of the Mother House, on June 29, 1946.
He left Theology with clear ideas and convictions: “I have made my final choice: God willing, I too will be among those whose only ideal here on earth is to work for the greater glory of God and apply to others the fruits of Redemption." (Letter on April 5 1946)
The Superiors assigned him to formation work in the minor seminaries: Spiritual Director in Cremona, Pedrengo, Zelarino (1948-52; 1954-58) and Desio (1952-54). Referring to those years, Fr. Secondo frequently said that they were “one of the most beautiful periods of my life as a Xaverian… the fervor of the students’ prayer, the mortification, the enthusiasm for the missions, always impelled me to be no less committed than those under my direction” (Letter of Nov. 11 1979). In the words of Fr. A. Dagnino, who knew him during those years: “It could perhaps be said that Fr. Tomaselli introduced a true spiritual direction in our house; it was almost perfect… He was naturally endowed with a singular inclination and capacity for discretion and listening… he truly was an artist at listening to others.”
In 1958 he left with the first group of Xaverians assigned to the new mission of the Congo. He worked in Kiringye, where he found himself in the middle of the Mulele inspired rebellion of the Simbas; following the example of the Good Shepherd, he asked to remain there in order to give hope by his presence and look after those wounded in the war: his wish was granted. At the end of that experience (1964) he was both physically and morally exhausted. As a result, he was called back home to Italy. He was sent to Bruxelles for aggiornamento (1966-68) and then assigned to Cremona as Spiritual Director; he also received treatment in Parma.
He returned to the Congo in 1972 and, after a year in Baraka, he was appointed assistant parish priest of the Cathedral in Uvira (1973-84). In the period 1984-88, he was put in charged of the Marian shrine of Kavinvira. Fr. Secondo’s work included a wide range of activities: the initiation of catechumens, the care of Christians, human promotion, works of mercy, pastoral work, school and the ever discrete assistance he provided to all who turned to him for help: “I have never had the ambition of becoming a highly regarded person; my only ambition has always been to make myself as useful as possible to all those I encounter in my missionary apostolate…" (July 29, 1967).
He returned to Italy in 1988 where he dedicated himself to the ministry of Reconciliation, in Parma and then in Pegli and, from 1999, again in Parma.
His life was enlightened by a joyful faith. In a letter dated Nov. 24 1998, he made his own the words of the Collect of the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time: “May your help, o Lord, make me ever more joyful in your service because only in dedication to you, source of all goodness, can I find full and everlasting happiness.”
May the Lord welcome him into Paradise, in the eternal place prepared for him.

Le père Secondo Tomaselli est décédé à 20h45 le 3 septembre 2003 à Parme. Il était soigné depuis 1999 pour insuffisance hépatique. Il avait 84 ans étant né à Castello di Zeri (Massa – Carrara) le 31 octobre 1918.
Après l’école primaire, il entra chez les Salésiens à la Spezia et, un an après, il décida d’entrer au Séminaire Diocésain de Pontremoli. Il rêvait de se consacrer à la vie missionnaire, pour continuer l’œuvre de deux prêtres salésiens tués au Brésil par les Kivaros. Son accompagnateur spirituel adressa alors le jeune Secondo chez les Missionnaires Xavériens. En novembre 1937, il entra au Noviciat à San Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenne) où, le 24 novembre 1938, il fit sa Première Profession. Il continua sa formation à Parme où le 29 juin 1946, il fut ordonné prêtre.
Au terme de ses études de théologie, il était profondément convaincu et déterminé : J’ai choisi une fois pour toutes : s’il plaît à Dieu, moi aussi je serai de ceux qui n’ont ici bas d’autre idéal que de chercher la gloire de Dieu et de procurer aux frères les fruits de la Rédemption (lettre du 05.04.1946). Les Supérieurs l’affectèrent comme directeur spirituel dans les maisons de formation à Crémone, Pedrengo (Bergame), Zelarino (Venise) et Desio (Milan). Il aimait dire de ces années : elles furent une des périodes les plus belles de ma vie xavérienne (…). La ferveur des jeunes dans la prière, la mortification, l’enthousiasme pour les Missions, tout cela m’a encouragé à ne jamais desservir les qualités de ces jeunes (lettre du 11.11.1979). Le père Amato Dagnino en témoigne : On peut affirmer qu’avec le père Tomaselli, les Xavériens ont commencé la vraie direction spirituelle, exercée, je dirais, presque parfaitement. (…) Il avait, par tempérament, un penchant et une capacité innée à demeurer discret à savoir écouter (…). C’était un véritable artiste de l’écoute.
En 1958, il partit avec le premier groupe des Xavériens affectés à la nouvelle mission du Congo. Il travailla à Kiringye où il endura les tracasseries de la rébellion muleliste des Simbas. A l’imitation du Bon Berger, il voulut et il obtint de rester sur place pour être une présence d’espérance et pour soigner les blessés de l’un ou l’autre camp. Il sortit de cette expérience en 1964, physiquement et moralement épuisé. S’ensuivirent alors deux ans de recyclage à Bruxelles pour reprendre la mission d’accompagnement spirituel à Crémone et à Parme.
En 1972 il rentra au Congo et il travailla à Baraka (1972 – 1973), à la Cathédrale d’Uvira (1973 – 1984) et fut, enfin, responsable du Sanctuaire Marial de Kavimvira (1984 – 1988). L’activité du père Secondo comprenait le soin pastoral des catéchumènes et des chrétiens, la promotion humaine et les œuvres de miséricorde, le ministère et les écoles. Il offrait une aide, toujours discrète, à toute personne qui s’adressait à lui : Je n’ai jamais cherché à paraître pour un ambitieux. Au contraire, j’ai cherché à me rendre utile à l’égard de tous ceux que j’ai rencontrés dans mon apostolat missionnaire. (lettre du 29.07.1967).
En 1988, il rentra en Italie où il se consacra particulièrement au ministère de la réconciliation à Parme, à Pegli (Gène) et, de nouveau, à Parme. Le père Fabrice Tosolini décrit ainsi les confessions du vieux Secondo : J’avais l’habitude d’aller me confesser chez le père Secondo. J’ai toujours trouvé en lui une extrême disponibilité et patience. Il semblait n’avoir aucune autre occupation, comme s’il était en train de m’attendre. Il avait un tempérament bon, jeune, joyeux, toujours plein d’espérance et d’enthousiasme. Il était capable d’enlever les poids de l’âme simplement par sa façon d’agir.
Que le Seigneur l’accueille dans Son paradis à la place qu’il lui a réservée.

En tes mains, ô Sainte Vierge, je remets mon sacerdoce afin que je sois un instrument digne de la Miséricorde du Bon Dieu et de ta maternelle assistance.
Et je m’en réjouis immensément même si je me considère un instrument pécheur et bien défaillant.
