Alle 19,45 del 22 settembre 2003, a Parma, è morto il P. Sandro Danieli.
Era in cura dall’agosto del 2001 e da un mese e mezzo le sue condizioni erano andate sensibilmente peggiorando. Era prossimo agli 84 anni, essendo nato a Montebello Vicentino (Vicenza) il 24.11.1919.
Proveniente da una famiglia di otto fratelli di cui tre religiosi (P. Sandro, Saveriano; P. Giuseppe, Giuseppino e sorella Teresa, Saveriana), entrò tra i Saveriani a Vicenza il 3.11.1930. Percorse il curriculum allora vigente: dopo le tre medie a Vicenza, il ginnasio a Grumone, il Noviziato e la Prima Professione (12.9.36) a S. Pietro in Vincoli, il Liceo e, dopo l’anno di Prefettato a Grumone (39-40), la teologia a Parma. Nel suo iter formativo non si può non segnalare la regolare collaborazione a Missioni Illustrate fin dal Liceo e, dal 1942, a Didattica Missionaria.
Ordinato prete (28.5.1944) rimase a Parma nel gruppo di giovanissimi che rilanciarono le stampe saveriane nell’immediato dopoguerra. P. Sandro lavorò, con compiti diversi, soprattutto a Missioni Illustrate, a Voci d’Oltre Mare e a Didattica Missionaria; si dedicò pure all’animazione dei maestri del movimento CEM e realizzò l’apprezzata antologia missionaria, Andiamo insieme.
Nel 1950 fu destinato alla nuova missione affidata ai Saveriani nel Pakistan Orientale, ma ai primi di luglio dell’anno successivo accettò la proposta dei Superiori di aggregarsi al gruppo di confratelli destinati al Giappone perché si era ammalato uno dei partenti. Giunse in Giappone il 15 agosto: il paese era ancora prostrato dalle immani distruzioni della guerra e il gruppo saveriano era alle prese con i problemi tipici dell’inizio di una missione. P. Sandro, dopo un anno fortunoso di studio del giapponese, fu Vice Parroco a Takanabe e successivamente fu Superiore della casa e Parroco di Myazaki-Ehira.
Nel 1958 fu richiamato a Parma per l’animazione missionaria nei Seminari. Si trattò di una obbedienza dura e sofferta: così si lamentava con il Superiore Generale: «sono stato alle stampe, poi in Missione, ora nei Seminari. Tre lavori che richiedono tre atteggiamenti interiori diversi e competenze diverse… così non si riesce ad ottenere i frutti desiderabili» (29.9.58).
L’anno successivo poté rientrare in Giappone. Ebbe l’incarico di Parroco e Superiore della casa a Kishiwada, fino al 1966. Dal 1966 al 1969 fu Superiore Regionale: un compito divenuto alla fine un calvario, vissuto con fiduciosa rassegnazione perché convinto, come gli scrisse allora il Superiore Generale, che «la sofferenza è un sacramento che purifica e santifica» (4.7.1969).
Dal 1969 al 1977 lavorò in Italia, come Animatore Missionario nei Seminari (69-70) e come Direttore di Missionari Saveriani (70-77). Riprese anche a far conoscere, attraverso la pubblicazione di antologie, canti e poesie dei popoli, favole del Giappone e della Cina. Intensificò inoltre i contatti con vari artisti, con i quali continuò a corrispondere anche dalla missione.
Nel 1977 ritornò in Giappone e vi rimase fino al 2001. Fu Parroco e Direttore della scuola materna di Izumi Sano (77-90); poi a Kanoya (90-97); quindi a Tano (97-2000). Le sue giornate erano scandite dalla presenza all’Asilo infantile, l’assistenza ai cristiani, l’insegnamento ai catecumeni e, negli ultimi anni, da problemi sempre più gravi di salute che visse con edificante serenità: «ho più tempo da dedicare alla lettura e alla preghiera. E ne rigrazio il Signore. Veramente tutto è suo dono» (2.12.1997).
Una vita, quella del P. Sandro, ispirata alla mitezza e all’umiltà insegnate da Gesù. Come si esprimeva nella lettera del 28.10.1997: «Che il Signore ci dia la grazia di essere miti ed umili di cuore; a non volerci mettere al primo posto ma all’ultimo; a testimoniare più con la vita che con le parole».
Il Signore lo accolga nel suo Riposo eterno.

Fr. Sandro Danieli died in Parma, at 7:45 pm, on Sept. 22 2003. He had been in nursing care since August 2001 and his condition had been steadily worsening since a month and a half before his death.
Born in Montebello Vicentino (Vicenza), on Nov. 24 1919, he was almost 84 years old.
Fr. Sandro hailed from a family of eight children, three of whom became religious (Fr. Sandro, Xaverian; Fr. Giuseppe, Congregation of St. Joseph; and Teresa, Xaverian Sister), and he joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on Nov. 3 1930. He completed the formation curriculum of that period: after three years in Vicenza, he moved to Grumone; from there he went to San Pietro in Vincoli for Novitiate and First Profession (Sept. 12, 1936). This was followed by a year as prefect in Grumone (1939-40) and Theology in Parma. Worthy of note during his formation years was his regular collaboration with “Missioni Illustrate” from the times of Liceo and, from 1942, with “Didattica Missionaria.” He was ordained priest on May 28 1944 and remained in Parma as part of the group which re-launched the Xaverian publications immediately after the war. Fr. Sandro had viarious responsibilities especially in “Missioni Illustrate”, “Voci d’Oltre Mare” and “Didattica Missionaria;” he was also animator of the CEM teachers and composed a much appreciated missionary anthology “Andiamo insieme.”
In 1950 he was assigned to the new Xaverian mission in West Pakistan but, at the beginning of July 1951, he accepted the proposal of the Superiors to join the group of confreres assigned to Japan because one of the departing missionaries had fallen ill. He arrived in Japan on Aug. 15 1951: the country was on its knees as a result of the war and the Xaverians had to grapple with the typical problems that face every new mission. Fr. Sandro, after an eventful year studying Japanese, was Vice-Parish priest at Takanabe and, subsequently, Superior of the House and parish priest at Myazaki-Ehira.
In 1958 he was recalled to Parma for missionary animation in the Seminaries. He had to make a difficult and trying act of obedience: he complained to the Superior General: “First I worked in publishing, then in the Missions, now in the Seminaries. Three tasks that call for different interior attitudes and competence… it is impossible to work profitably in such a manner” (Sept. 29 1958).
The following year he managed to return to Japan, where he was parish priest and Superior of the house in Kishiwada until 1966. From 1966 until 1969, he was Regional Superior: a task which became a cross for him and which he endured with a trusting resignation because he was convinced, as the Superior General wrote to him, that “suffering is a purifying and sanctifying sacrament.” (July 4 1969).
In the period 1969-77 he worked in Italy, as Missionary Animator in the Seminaries (1969-70) and Director of “Missionari Saveriani" (1970-77). He resumed the task of publishing and distributing anthologies, songs and poems of different peoples, and tales of Japan and China. He intensified his contacts with various artists with whom he also kept in touch from the missions.
He returned to Japan in 1977, and remained there until 2001. He was parish priest and Director of the Primary School of Izumi Sano (1977-90); then at Kanoya (1990-97); and finally in Tano (1997-2000). His days were occupied by the nursery school, assistance to Christians, teaching the catechumens and, in the last years, by ever more serious health problems that he bore with edifying serenity: “I have more time for reading and prayer and I thank God for this. Truly, everything is His gift” (Dec. 2, 1997).
Fr. Sandro’s life was inspired by the meekness and humility taught by Jesus. In a letter dated Oct. 28 1997, he wrote: “May the Lord give us the grace of being meek and humble of heart, to shun the limelight and bear witness more through our lives than by our words.” May the Lord welcome him into his Eternal Rest.
