Il giorno 8.1.2004, a Parma in Casa Madre, alle 11,55 è morto il P. Rinaldo Dal Pozzo: aveva superato i 93 anni, essendo nato a Castelletto di Rotzo (Vicenza) il 13.06.1910.
È probabile che la storia saveriana del P. Rinaldo abbia avuto inizio durante la grande guerra del ‘15-‘18, quando la sua famiglia dovette abbandonare il paese sull’altopiano di Asiago, diventato teatro di battaglia, e vivere per qualche anno come sfollata a Vicenza.
Sta di fatto che nel 1923 entrò all’Istituto di Vicenza dove frequentò i cinque anni di ginnasio. Nel 1928 passò a Parma per il Noviziato e il 29.8.29 emise la Prima Professione nelle mani del Beato Guido. Fece quindi il primo anno di liceo, al termine del quale fu mandato come viceprefetto a Vicenza: per due anni fu assistente degli apostolini e nello stesso tempo studiò privatamente le materie della seconda e terza liceo. Ritornò infine a Parma per la Teologia che frequentò regolarmente dal ‘32 al ‘36. Venne ordinato presbitero l’11.4.1936.
Lasciando la Teologia chiedeva al Signore la grazia di essere riconoscente per i doni ricevuti e di aiutarlo a «fare qualcosa di utile per la Famiglia nella quale mi volle…E poi anche perché io non sia di ostacolo al maggior bene spirituale … delle anime che venissero a me colla speranza di sentire, da un sacerdote, la parola del perdono, dell’incoraggiamento e della luce» (24.6.36).
Dopo neppure un anno di permanenza in Italia, confessore a S. Pietro in Vincoli e, dal settembre ’36, Vice rettore a Vicenza, ricevette la destinazione alla Cina. Nell’occasione scrisse ai Superiori: «è un onore per me perché “vos estis sal terrae, vos estis lux mundi”, ma io so bene che luce sono e che sale!» (22.3.37).
Il 31 maggio 1937 sbarcò a Shanghai. Raggiunse quindi la domus di Cheng Chow per lo studio del cinese. Si trattò di un impegno particolarmente arduo, continuato anche l’anno successivo a Yeshih e vissuto positivamente: «per me fu una vera fortuna, per non chiamarla anche grazia… perché in tal maniera non potevo esplicare attività esterna e dovevo rimanermene chiuso in casa. Credo che avevo bisogno di pensare un po’ a me stesso e questi due anni furono propizi a questo lavoro…» (14.11.39).
Nel settembre del 1939 fu destinato alla cristianità di Wang Kou, la sua missione di Cina che si svolse negli anni dell’invasione giapponese e della conquista del potere da parte di Mao Tze Tung. Dal giugno ’42 al maggio ’45 fu internato nel campo di concentramento di Si Tch’oang. Ritornato a Wang Kou nel marzo del 47, assistette, l’anno successivo, all’arrivo dei comunisti che, da un atteggiamento iniziale di rispetto, passarono successivamente alle angherie e infine alla sua espulsione dalla Repubblica Popolare, avvenuta l’11.9.1952.
Ritornato in Italia, condizionato da grossi problemi di vista, fu Rettore per alcuni mesi a Massa Lucana poi Direttore Spirituale i diverse comunità saveriane dell’Italia. Fino all’approdo nel 1963 a Tavernerio, dove fu confessore dei Liceisti (63-74) dei Novizi (74-78), e quindi, fino praticamente al suo ritiro a Parma (gennaio 2003), incaricato dei benefattori, aiuto alla Cappella di S. Anna, addetto all’accoglienza. Anni lunghissimi caratterizzati dalla laboriosità: – quanti rubinetti e interruttori sistemati dal P. Rinaldo!– dalla preghiera prolungata, dalla fede viva nel suo Signore, dalla carità verso gli ammalati, da una serenità profonda. Ed anche da cordiali rapporti con i vari Superiori Generali, perché nella sua riconoscenza verso tutti coloro di cui Dio «si è servito per darmi, conservarmi e svilupparmi in questa vita… i Superiori hanno una gran parte» (13.6.83).
Il P. Rinaldo era solito dichiararsi «bisognoso della misericordia di Dio e fiducioso in quella» (18.1.85); per questo, come l’albero piantato lungo il fiume (Ps 1), ha continuato sino alla fine a produrre i frutti della testimonianza, della preghiera silenziosa, dell’offerta delle sofferenze.

Fr. Rinaldo Dal Pozzo died at the Mother House in Parma on Jan. 8 2004: born in Castelletto di Rotzo (Vicenza) on June 13 1910, he was 93 years old.
His Xaverian adventure probably began during the First World War when his family had to abandon their home village on the plateau of Asiago, which had become a battlefield, to live as evacuees for some years in Vicenza.
He joined the Congregation in Vicenza in 1923, where he completed the five-year junior high school program. In 1928 he moved to Parma for Novitiate and made his first profession, in the hands of the Founder, on August 29 1928. After completing the first year of high school he was sent to Vicenza as vice-prefect, where he supervised the junior seminarians and studied privately the subjects of the second and third years of high school. He then returned to Parma for Theology (1932-36). He was ordained priest on April 11 1936.
Leaving Theology, he asked the Lord to grant him the grace of gratitude for the gifts he had received and to help him “do something useful for the family to which I have been called… May I never be an obstacle to the greater spiritual good… of anyone who approaches me in the hope of hearing, from a priest, words of forgiveness, encouragement and enlightenment” (June 24 1936).
He was assigned to China after less than one year in Italy (during that period he was confessor in S. Pietro in Vincoli and, from September 1936, Vice-rector in Vicenza). In a letter to the superiors, he wrote: “It is an honor for me because ‘you are salt of the earth, and light of the world,’ but I am only too aware of what kind of salt and light I am!” (March 22, 1937).
After his arrival in Shanghai on May 31 1937, he went to the domus of Cheng Chow to study Chinese. Though it was a particularly demanding task, which continued the following year in Yeshih, it was a positive experience: “It was both a stroke of good luck and a grace… because I could not engage in any external activities and I had to remain at home. I needed time to think about myself and those two years helped me to do just that…” (Nov. 14 1939).
In September 1939 he was assigned to the Christian community of Wang Kou. His mission in China was carried out during the years of the Japanese invasion and the Mao Tze Tung takeover. In the period June 1942-May 1945 he was imprisoned in the concentration camp of Si Tch’oang. In March 1937 he returned to Wang Kou and there he witnessed the arrival of the communists the following year: their initial attitude of respect soon changed and led finally to his expulsion from the people’s Republic on Sept. 11 1952.
Upon his return to Italy, with serious eyesight problems, he was Rector for a few months in Massa Lucana and then Spiritual Director in various Italian Xaverian communities. In 1963 he was sent to Tavernerio where he served as confessor to the high school students (1963-74) and to the Novices (1974-78); thereafter, practically until his retirement to Parma (January 2003), he was put in charge of the Benefactors and hospitality; he also served as assistant in the Sant’Anna chapel. These were long years of hard work, prolonged prayer, living faith, charity towards sick people and profound serenity. He also enjoyed cordial relationships with various Superiors General, gratefully "acknowledging the major role they played in helping him throughout his life" (in his letter on June 13, 1983).
Fr. Rinaldo used to declare that he was “in need of God’s mercy and that he trusted in it” (Jan. 18 1983); as a result, like the tree planted by water streams (Psalm 1), he continued to produce the fruits of witness, silent prayer and the offering of his suffering until the very end. May he rest in Peace.
