Sono molto grato a tutti i miei confratelli saveriani per il ricordo e la celebrazione del mio sessantesimo anniversario di ordinazione presbiterale (22.01.2026, ndr). Sono profondamente consapevole che Dio, Trinità di Amore Eterno, sia stato incredibilmente generoso con me per tutta la vita. Avevo appena tre mesi quando mia madre, certa che sarei morto, chiese a mio padre di chiamare il parroco del luogo per venire a benedirmi. Quando il parroco arrivò e mi vide, disse immediatamente: “Il neonato non è morto. Diventerà un sacerdote!” Avevo sentito parlare di questo episodio, ma mia madre me lo confermò soltanto dopo la mia ordinazione sacerdotale. Il mio parroco, quando gli espressi il desiderio di entrare nel seminario minore dei Francescani, per risposta mi disse: “No! Tu diventerai un missionario saveriano. Io sarò colui che ti metterà in contatto con loro!” Devo onestamente ammettere che Dio, Padre Eterno ed Amorevole, non poteva essere più creativo, sorprendente e generoso con me per tutto il corso della mia vita e il mio ministero missionario. Fin dall’inizio, i miei padri spirituali e formatori saveriani mi hanno aiutato e guidato a divenire sempre più consapevole che Dio è Unità di Amore, Vita di Amore, Missione di Amore, Sempre e Ovunque, con Amore e Per Amore. Mentre portavo avanti il mio servizio missionario in Colombia, le Suore di Madre Teresa di Calcutta mi chiesero di stare con Madre Teresa e di accompagnarla nell’incontro con varie persone che avrebbe fatto durante il suo soggiorno in Colombia. Avrei dovuto tradurre per lei dallo spagnolo all’inglese, e dall’inglese allo spagnolo. Passando da un posto all’altro, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di parlare molto tra noi. Madre Teresa, che all’epoca stava soffrendo in modo considerevole, mi descrisse quello che lei chiamava “la vera storia della sua vita” in una maniera alquanto diversa da come altri ne parlavano. Lei era sorpresa dal fatto che per molti anni non aveva sperimentato alcun tipo di gioia. Provai a dire alla Madre che per Gesù noi tutti siamo una opportunità unica di rivivere la Sua Stessa Vita, in ciascuno di noi, di sperimentare tutte le Sue sofferenze, inclusa l’esperienza dolorosa dell’abbandono da parte di Suo Padre, Dio Amore. Dopo alcuni attimi di silenzio, Madre Teresa di Calcutta mi disse: “Se Lui è Gesù in me, devo stare con Gesù solo ‘con un sorriso’!” Nella mia vita, come discepolo di Gesù, come Missionario Saveriano, come sacerdote ordinato, mi sforzo di ricordare sempre quelle sue parole: stare, vivere e servire con Gesù e in Gesù, per essere come Gesù. Gentilezza, bontà, un sorriso, una presenza amorevole producono molti frutti sorprendenti. Benedetti noi che abbiamo questa vocazione, questa opportunità e questa esperienza. (Ivan Marchesin s.x.)

I am very grateful to all my Xaverian Confreres for remembering and celebrating the Sixtieth Anniversary of my Priestly Ordination (22.01.2026). I am deeply aware that God, Trinity of Eternal Love, has been incredibly generous with me, all along all my life. I was only three months old when my mother, certain that I had died, asked my father to go and invite the local parish priest to come and bless me. When the parish priest arrived and saw me, immediately said: “The baby is not dead. He will be a priest!” I heard of this, but my mother confirmed this episode only after my priestly ordination. My parish priest, answering to my expressed desire of entering the Minor Seminary of the Franciscans, said to me: “No!, You will become a Xaverian Missionary. I will be the one to contact them!” I do have to honestly admit that God, Eternal Loving Father, could not have been more creative, surprising and generous with me all along my whole life and my missionary ministry. My Xaverian Spiritual Directors and Formators, from the beginning, helped me and guided me to become ever more aware that God is Unity of Love, Life of Love, Mission of Love, Always and Everywhere with Love and For Love. While I was doing my Missionary Ministry in Colombia, I was asked by the Religious Sisters of Mother Theresa of Calcutta to stay with Mother Theresa and accompany her as she would encounter various persons while in Colombia. I had to translate, for her, from Spanish to English, and from English Language to Spanish. Moving from place to place, we had a chance to talk a lot together. Mother Theresa, who at that moment was suffering considerably, described to me what she was calling “the very true story of her life”, rather different than what others were saying. She was surprised by the fact that, for many years, she was not experiencing any joy. I tried to say to Mother that all of us are, for Jesus, a unique opportunity to relive in each one of us His Very Life; all His sufferings, including the painful experience of the abandonment by His Father, God Love. After some moments of silence, Mother Theresa of Calcutta said to me: “If He is Jesus in me, I have to stay with Jesus only with a smile!” In my life, as a follower of Jesus, as a Xaverian Missionary, as an ordained priest, I try hard to ever remember her words: to stay, live and minister with Jesus and in Jesus, as to be like Jesus. Gentleness, kindness, a smile, a loving presence do produce many surprising fruits. Blessed are we who have this vocation, this opportunity and this experience. (Ivan Marchesin sx)
