P. Bruno Calderaro

Il 28 maggio 2017, a Douala, dopo il Vespro, P. Bruno Calderaro è stato trovato morto nella sua stanza. Aveva 79 anni compiuti. Padre Bruno Calderaro nacque a Cittadella (Padova – Italia) il 23 settembre 1937.
Entrò all'Istituto il 26 settembre 1950 a Vicenza (dove frequentò la media inferiore) per poi passare a Zelarino (ginnasio).
Dopo un anno di noviziato vissuto intensamente (“il più bello della mia vita” dirà a p. Gazza il 17.9.1937), chiese al Padre Generale di ammetterlo nell’Istituto “per la salvezza degli infedeli…Il mio ideale, sognato da fanciullo, vissuto da giovanetto, da ragazzo e da giovane”.
Dopo la Prima Professione fatta a S. Pietro in Vincoli il 12.9.1957, il giovane Bruno continuò la sua formazione di base a Desio (liceo) e a Parma (propedeutica e teologia). Fu ordinato Presbitero a Parma il 17 ottobre 1965.
Alla fine della teologia, fu destinato a Zelarino come animatore vocazionale. Poco dopo, però, in una lettera indirizzata al Padre Generale (21.09.1966), p. Bruno faceva presente alcune sue difficoltà a livello fisico dovute all’incarico che ricopriva, che mettevano in pericolo la sua vita spirituale, e per questo chiese al Padre Generale di trovargli “quella sistemazione di vita che sia più adatta alla mia santificazione di missionario saveriano”.
La sua richiesta fu accolta e nel 1967 P. Bruno fu destinato al Messico dove prestò il suo servizio nella formazione, nell’insegnamento e nelle costruzioni a San Juan del Río (1967-77) e ad Arandas (1977-85).
La vita di p. Bruno in Messico è ben riassunta in una testimonianza fatta dal sig. Alejandro Macías Sapién (ex allievo saveriano): “(p. Bruno) era un uomo di “intensità” in tutti i sensi … un uomo profondamente mariano, e anche molto dinamico … Mi piaceva contemplarlo mentre costruiva il seminario, cercava il materiale di costruzione, curava i benefattori, celebrava la Messa … P. Bruno ha influito moltissimo nella mia vita, lui è stato come la sorgente principale perché io possa essere un uomo di bene, responsabile e vicino a Dio…”.
Nel 1984 espresse alla DG il suo desiderio di andare in Zaire per esaudire il suo sogno dell’Africa. Fu “quasi” accontentato con la destinazione al Camerun/Ciad..
Dopo qualche mese di studio del francese a Parigi, nell’ottobre del 1985 arrivò a Douala dove gli fu assegnato l’incarico di vice parroco nella parrocchia di Douala-Oyack.
Il suo impatto con la missione africana fu positiva come lui stesso racconta “Personalmente mi trovo molto bene. Sono contento e ho trovato un po' il cammino dell’evangelizzazione. La presenza fra gli africani è indispensabile per attirarli al Cristo. Cerchiamo di far loro conoscere il grande mistero di Dio. Ringrazio il Signore che mi concede molta gioia nel vivere e stare in mezzo a loro.” (Lettera a p. Alfiero Ceresoli del 30.05.1986).
Nel 1992 fu nominato parroco della nascente parrocchia di Douala-Ndog Passi. Nel 1999 lo troviamo parroco a Bafoussam-Koptchou. Dal 2007 al 2009 svolse il suo servizio missionario come rettore della comunità della Filosofia a Bafoussam. Dopo un anno sabbatico trascorso in Italia, fu destinato alla comunità di animazione di Douala. Qui per un anno (2013-2014) fu anche parroco della nuova parrocchia di “Saint Jude Ngodi-Bakoko”.
Nonostante la salute cagionevole, p. Bruno dedicava molto tempo a due sue grandi “passioni”: la costruzione di edifici parrocchiali e la catechesi.
Domenica 28.5.2017, poco prima della S. Messa, p. Bruno si sentì poco bene. Durante tutta la giornata rimase tenuto sotto osservazione in un ospedale vicino a casa. Sentendosi meglio, rientrò a casa dove trovò il Signore Risorto che lo stava aspettando per accompagnarlo nel posto che gli aveva preparato in cielo.

Fr. Bruno Calderaro was found dead in his room in Douala, after Vespers, on 28 May 2017. Born in Cittadella (Padua – Italy) on 23 September 1937, he was 79 years old.
He joined the Institute on 26 September 1950 in Vicenza, where he attended junior high school before moving to Zelarino for senior high school. After an intense Novitiate experience, which he described to Fr. Gazza on 17 September 1937, as “the most wonderful year of my life”, he asked the Superior General to admit him to the Institute “for the salvation of the pagans …which is the ideal I have dreamt about since I was a child”.
He made his First Profession in S. Pietro in Vincoli on 12 September 1957; thereafter he continued his initial formation in Desio (Lyceum) and Parma (Introductory year and Theology), where he was ordained priest on 17 October 1965.
After completing his Theology studies, he was assigned to Zelarino as vocation animator. Soon after, in a letter to the Superior General (21.09.1966), Fr. Bruno described some of the physical problems caused by his activity and which were a threat to his spiritual life. He therefore asked the Superior General to find him “a solution that would be more conducive to my sanctification as a Xaverian missionary”.
His request was granted and he was assigned in 1967 to Mexico where he served in formation, teaching and constructions in San Juan del Río (1967-77) and Arandas (1977-85).
The life of Fr. Bruno in Mexico is well summed up by a former Xaverian student, Mr. Alejandro Macías Sapién: “(Fr. Bruno) was an “intense” man in every sense … a profoundly Marian and very dynamic man … I liked to contemplate him while he was building the seminary, looking for construction materials, following the benefactors and celebrating Mass … Fr. Bruno had a great influence on my life and he helped me to become a good, responsible man and close to God …”.
In 1984 he asked the General Direction to send him to Zaire so that he could fulfill his desire to work in Africa. He was assigned to Africa, but to Cameroon-Chad.
After a few months studying French in Paris, he arrived in Douala in October 1985, where he was assigned the task of assistant priest in the parish of Douala-Oyack.
His first impact with the African mission was positive: “I am well and happy and have found my feet in the work of evangelization. Living among the Africans is essential if we are to draw them to Christ. We try to reveal the great mystery of God to them. I thank the Lord for granting me the great joy of living among them.” (Letter to Fr. Alfiero Ceresoli, 30.05.1986).
In 1992 he was appointed parish priest of the newly founded parish of Douala-Ndog Passi. In 1999 he was appointed parish priest of Bafoussam-Koptchou. From 2007 until 2009 he carried out his missionary service as rector of the Philosophy community in Bafoussam.
After a sabbatical year in Italy, he was assigned to the animation community of Douala, where he also served for one year (2013-2014) as parish priest of the new parish of “Saint Jude Ngodi-Bakoko”.
Despite his delicate health, Fr. Bruno dedicated a great deal of time to his two great “passions”: the construction of parish buildings and catechesis.
On Sunday, 28 May 2017, Fr. Bruno felt unwell shortly before Mass. During the entire day he was kept under observation in a hospital close to the house. Feeling better he went back home but the Lord was waiting to accompany him to the place he had prepared for him in Heaven.

Le 28 mai 2017, à Douala, après les vêpres, le père Bruno a été trouvé mort dans sa chambre. Il avait 79 ans. Il naquit à Cittadella (Padova- Italie) le 23 septembre 1937. Il entra à l’Institut le 26 septembre 1950 à Vicenza (où il fréquenta l’école secondaire et c’est à Zelarino qu’il alla pour la Gymnase. Après l’année de Noviciat vécue de façon intense, « la plus belle année de ma vie » ; il demanda au père Général d’être admis à l’Institut « pour sauver les infidèles… mon idéale, rêvé dès l’enfance, vécu dans le jeune âge ». Après la première profession à San Pietro in Vincoli, le 12 septembre 1957, le jeune Bruno continua sa formation de base à Desio (lycée) et à Parme (la propédeutique et la théologie). Il fut ordonné prêtre à Parme le 17 octobre 1960.
A la fin de la théologie, il fut destiné à Zelarino comme animateur vocationnel. Peu après, dans ses lettres au père General, (21/09/1966), le père Bruno lui faisait noter certaines de ses difficultés au niveau physique dues à la charge qu’il assumait ; ces difficultés mettaient en danger sa vie spirituelle. Pour cette raison, il demanda au père General de trouver pour lui « cet emplacement de vie qui soit adapté à sa sanctification en tant que missionnaire xavérien ». sa demande fut accueillie et en 1967 il fut destiné au Mexique où il rendit le service dans la formation, dans l’enseignement et dans la construction à San Juan de Rio ( 1967-77) et à Arandas (77-85). La vie du père Bruno au Mexique est bien synthétisée dans un témoignage fait par monsieur Alejandro Macias Sapién ( un ex élève xavérien) : « le père Bruno était un homme d’intensité en tous les sens… un homme profondément mariale, très dynamique… j’aimais le contempler quand il construisait le Séminaire, ou bien quand il cherchait le matériel pour la construction, quand il s’occupait des bienfaiteurs ou bien quand il célébrait la messe… le père Bruno a eu une influence forte dans ma vie. Il a été comme la source principale pour que je devienne un homme de bien, responsable et près de Dieu… »
En 1984 il exprima à la Direction Générale son désir d’aller au Zaïre pour accomplir son rêve de l’Afrique. Il fut presque exaucé en recevant la destination au Cameroun- Tchad. Apres quelques mois d’étude du français à Paris, en Octobre 1985 il arriva à Douala où il fut destiné à Douala Oyack comme vicaire paroissiale. Son impact avec la mission africaine fut positif comme lui-même racconte : « personnellement je me trouve très bien. Je suis content et j’ai un peu retrouvé le chemin de l’évangélisation. La présence parmi les africains est indispensable pour les attirer au Christ. Nous cherchons de leur faire connaitre le mystère de Dieu. Je remercie le Seigneur qui me donne tant des joies en vivant et en étant parmi eux » (lettre au père Alfiero Ceresoli du 30 mai 1986). En 92 il fut nommé curé de la nouvelle paroisse de Douala-Ndog Passi. En 99 il fut curé à Bafoussam-Keptchou. Depuis 2007 jusqu’en 2009 il fit son service missionnaire comme recteur de la communauté de Philosophie à Bafoussam.
Après une année sabbatique en Italie, il fut destiné à la communauté d’animation de Douala. Ici même il fut curé pour un an (2013-2014) de la nouvelle paroisse de « Saint Jude Ngodi- Bakoko ». Malgré la santé fragile, le père Bruno dédiait la grande partie de son temps à ses deux passions majeures : la construction d’édifices paroissiales, et la catéchèse. Le Dimanche 28 mai 2017, peu de temps avant la messe, le père Bruno se senti mal. Pendant toute la journée, on le garda sous contrôle dans un hôpital voisin. Vu qu’il se sentait mieux, il rentra à la maison où il trouva le Seigneur Ressuscité qui l’attendait pour l’accompagner à sa place lui réservée au Ciel.
