P. Catellani era nato a Praticello di Gattatico (Reggio Emilia) il 15 gennaio 1935 ed era entrato da noi già sacerdote nell'ottobre del 1962. Emessa la Professione Religiosa il 3 ottobre 1963, era partito per lo Zaire poco più di un mese dopo.
In quel paese era già incominciata la sollevazione dei mulelisti che coinvolse tutte le missioni. Momenti tragici di quei mesi furono l'uccisione di ventun missionari a Kongolo, nel basso Kindu, e la reclusione di un certo gruppo dei nostri, compreso il Vescovo Mons. Catarzi, nell'episcopio di Uvira, in una situazione veramente drammatica. Il gruppo fu liberato dal P. Pansa il 7 ottobre del 1964, ma alla direzione generale sembrò opportuno che i confratelli coinvolti in quell'episodio tornassero in Italia per un opportuno riposo.
Anche il P. Carlo fu tra i rimpatriati, però non si fermò a lungo in Italia. Nel 1965 lo ritroviamo nello Zaire addetto all'economia del seminario minore. Dal 1966 al 1969 egli lavorò a Mwenga, prima come aiutante, poi come superiore della missione.
Dal 1970 al 1982 fu incaricato di dirigere il Centro Diocesano per la catechesi e la pastorale. Quando il Centro venne spostato a Kavimvira (1979) egli poté dare una mano anche nella pastorale di quella parrocchia,
Nel 1982 fu nominato rettore della Casa di Cagliari: un impegno a cui egli attese con scrupolosa diligenza a cui unì una bene impostata animazione missionaria esterna.
Il 14 febbraio, mentre stava scendendo le scale per partecipare all'incontro giornaliero con gli aspiranti missionari, fu colto da emorragia cerebrale. Morì alle prime ore del mattino del 17 febbraio. Numerose persone si raccolsero in preghiera davanti alla sua salma e parteciparono alle preghiere di suffragio tenute sia in casa che nella chiesa parrocchiale. Dopo i funerali, la bara venne trasportata al suo paese natio per una seconda commossa cerimonia funebre, cui hanno preso parte anche le nostre comunità, oltre alla popolazione locale.
Dopo il solenne rito, la salma fu portata nel cimitero di Parma per esservi sepolta accanto a quelle dei confratelli che lo hanno preceduto nel segno della fede e dell'amore.

Fr. Carlo Catellani died of a cerebral aneurysm on Feb. 17 1987 at the Xaverian house in Cagliari. He was 52 years old, born at Praticello di Gattatico (Reggio Emilia) on Jan. 15 1935.
Fr. Catellani entered the Xaverians at Nizza Monferrato in Oct. 1962, after studies and priesthood ordination in Reggio Emilia. He was ordained on June 22 1958, and therefore professed religious vows at the end of his Novitiate at Nizza on Oct. 3 1963.
Soon after, he departed for Congo, and reached a mission that saw many tragic events, with much political instability. He spent the first part of 1964 at Kalampo, studying the language and lending his services for whatever he could. The uprising of the Mulelist affected every mission post and all missionary personnel there. The climax of that uprising was the killing of 21 Spiritan missionaries at Kongolo, in lower Kindu, on Jan. 4 1964. Soon after, there was the internment of a number of Xaverians, including Bishop Catarzi, in the bishop’s residence at Uvira under threats and duress. Fr. Pansa eventually freed this group through a dramatic intervention on Oct. 7 1964. The General Direction thought it best to recalled back to Italy the victims of this ordeal, and Fr. Catellani was one of them. Soon after, the killing of the missionaries at Fizi and Baraka happened.
Fr. Catellani did not remain in Italy for too long, for he went back to Zaire in 1965 as treasurer of the minor seminary. Then, he served at Mwenga (1966-69) as assistant, and then as superior of that mission.
In 1970-71 Fr. Catellani took one year of Aggiornamento in Rome, after which he was named Director of the Diocesan Center for the Catechesis and Pastoral Work. When this Center was moved to Kavimvira in 1979, he also gave a hand in that parish, just as he had been doing in Uvira.
Fr. Carlo is named rector of the house of Cagliari in 1982, and returns to Italy. He took this assignment very seriously, with much personal preparation and assiduity, and organized a well thought-out missionary animation program in the area parishes.
Unfortunately, on Feb. 14 1987, as he was getting ready for a meeting with the students, he suffered a brain aneurysm which brought him to his death in the early hours of Feb. 17 1987. Many people expressed their sympathy and their love to the Xaverians in the funeral services at the Xaverian house and a large number of mourners participated in the parish church in Cagliari. After this event, the coffin of Fr. Carlo was shipped to S. Ilario d’Enza (Reggio Emilia) for a final funeral liturgy concelebrated by Xaverian confreres representing many communities, in addition to the local people. He was laid to rest at S. Ilario d’Enza.

Il exerça son ministère pendant 18 ans au Congo et quatre ans en Sardaigne.
Le père Carlo naquit le 15 janvier 1935 à Praticello, dans la Commune de Gattatico, un village de Reggio Emilia, au nord de l’Italie. Il entra chez les Xavériens en octobre 1962, après son ordination presbytérale. Il fit la profession des vœux religieux le 3 octobre 1963 et il partit, le mois suivant, au Zaïre, actuelle République Démocratique du Congo.
Dans ce pays, venait de commencer la rébellion des mulelistes qui semaient la panique dans toutes les missions et les églises. Parmi les périodes sanguinaires de cette époque – là, on évoque le martyr de la Bienheureuse Sr Anwarite Marie – Clémentine, le massacre de 21 missionnaires à Kongolo, dans la province du Maniema et la captivité d’un certain nombre des Xavériens, y compris l’évêque Mgr Catarzi, à l’évêché d’Uvira dans un climat extrêmement tendu. Le groupe recouvra la liberté le 7 octobre 1964 par le biais du père Pansa. Le père Carlo était de ce groupe.
Après quelques mois de congé, il rentra au Zaïre en assumant la tâche de Recteur du petit séminaire d’Uvira. Dans les années 1966 –1969 il travailla à Mwenga comme vicaire et supérieur de la communauté.
Par après, il dirigea pendant 12 ans (1970 – 1982) le Centre Diocésain de Pastorale et Catéchèse d’Uvira. Il se distingua par son dévouement dans la formation des catéchistes et des agents pastoraux. Pour la pastorale des jeunes, il fonda la « Jamia », un mouvement d’action catholique pour l’encadrement chrétien des enfants et pré – adolescents.
En 1982, il fut nommé supérieur de la communauté de Cagliari (Italie) : un service qu’il sut rendre avec diligence et précision en continuant d’assurer une animation missionnaire par ses activités et son style de vie.
Le 14 février 1987, pendant qu’il descendait un escalier pour participer à la rencontre communautaire avec les aspirants missionnaires, il fut atteint d’une hémorragie cérébrale. Il rendit l’âme trois jours après, le 17 février.
Durant les obsèques, nombreuses personnes rendirent hommage à ce missionnaire rempli de zèle et serein. Il fut enterré à Parme, à côté des confrères qui le précédèrent sur le chemin de la foi et de l’amour.

Il sut discerner avec promptitude dans sa vie le chemin que le Seigneur lui montrait, en travaillant avec satisfaction dans son diocèse d’origine d’abord et, ensuite, dans le vaste champ missionnaire du Zaïre.
Il eut un fructueux apostolat auprès des jeunes, les conduisant à approfondir leur foi, par la catéchèse ou la pastorale, afin d’en faire des évangélisateurs de leurs frères éparpillés dans tout le diocèse d’Uvira. Il se consacra, pendant cinq ans à Cagliari, à un accompagnement vocationnel attentif des jeunes qui lui furent confiés pour les porter à la consécration totale et en faire des prêtres et apôtres de l’Evangile.
Quand arriva à l’improviste l’appel du Seigneur, il fut trouvé vigilant et engagé dans son travail comme le serviteur bon et fidèle. Il fut invité à s’asseoir à la table céleste dans la cité bienheureuse de Dieu, la Sainte Jérusalem. (Epitaphe parue sur la photo - souvenir de sa mort)
