P. Bruno Dri

Il 3 febbraio 2013, sul mezzogiorno, all'ospedale di Parma dove era ricoverato per broncopolmonite, è morto il P. Bruno Dri. Aveva 85 anni, essendo nato a Porpetto (Udine) il 14 febbraio 1928.
Nella storia della vocazione di Dri ci sono due presenze significative. Innanzitutto la mamma Giuseppina. Su Missionari Saveriani, Gennaio 1998 P. Dri ricordava che qualche amica del paese diceva a sua mamma che era una pazzia lasciar andare il figlio in paesi lontani, selvaggi. E commentava: «Forse era una pazzia, ma con tanta e grande fede». La seconda presenza è quella di P. Amedeo Pelizzo, allora giovane sacerdote dell'archidiocesi di Udine e cappellano a San Giorgio di Nogaro. Fu lui che lo segnalò ai Saveriani di Vicenza: «Il ragazzo... di veramente ottima indole morale, a giudizio comune è ritenuto il migliore adolescente del paese... ha le più belle qualità per poter riuscire. Anche come intelligenza si distingueva tra i compagni della sua classe».
Il 15 ottobre del '41 lo accompagnò all'Istituto di Vicenza. Qui frequentò la seconda e terza media, poi passò a Grumone (CR) per i due anni di ginnasio e 1'8 settembre 1945 iniziò l'anno canonico di Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli; emise la Prima Professione il 24 settembre 1946. Frequentò quindi la prima liceo a Parma, la seconda e la terza a Desio nella nuova sede del liceo saveriano. Seguirono due anni di prefettato (49-51) a Udine. Concluse infine l'iter formativo con gli studi teologici a Piacenza. La presentazione ai ministeri ordinati, come le altre valutazioni dei suoi formatori, è in linea con il giudizio iniziale di P. Pelizzo: «Di spirito molto buono e generoso. Cura bene la sua vita di pietà. Carattere docile, umile, giudizioso. Un po' timido». Fu ordinato Presbitero in Santa Chiara a Piacenza il 3 ottobre1954.
Nell'aprile dell'anno dopo P. Dri era già al lavoro nella missione del Bangladesh (allora Pakistan Orientale). Per la verità i sette teologi di terza erano stati destinati al Nias, una missione che si sarebbe dovuta aprire nel '55. Per questo non fecero le vacanze e, con le dovute autorizzazioni, dal luglio al dicembre 54 svolsero i programmi del quarto anno di teologia e ai primi di gennaio erano pronti per la nuova missione. Ma questa fu affidata ad altri. P. Dri fu dirottato nell'attuale Bangladesh.
In questa missione P. Dri ha svolto un lungo apostolato missionario con compiti importanti di parroco, superiore religioso, amministratore e vicario generale della diocesi di Khulna.
Dal '55 al '60 fu Viceparroco e a Shimulia e poi Parroco a Satkhira. In quel periodo insieme con il P. Crestani ebbe dal Vescovo l'incarico di andare di villaggio in villaggio a fare catechismo. «Non so per quanto tempo abbia portato avanti questo impegno – commenta P. Rigon – ma era un impegno costoso perché a quei tempi nei villaggi non c'era chiesa o casa per il padre». P. Garello aggiunge: «P. Dri possedeva bene la lingua bengalese tanto da intrattenere la gente con un linguaggio popolare e da riuscire ad usare un metodo di conversazione-dibattito per proporre il messaggio cristiano».
Dal '60 al '63 ricoprì la carica di Superiore Religioso; poi Economo e Procuratore diocesano. Nel 64-65 conseguì al Coady International Institute (Canada) il diploma di Social Leadership.
Ritornato in Bangladesh diresse la High School di Shelabunia e collaborò come cappellano in parrocchia. Dal '68 all"80 fu Economo e Procuratore della Diocesi, nonché Vicario Generale.
Nell'80 lasciò il Bangladesh e fino all'84 fu Amministratore della Procura di Parma. Conseguì nell'anno accademico '84-'85 presso The East Asian Institute di Manila il Pastoral studies Certificate.
Nell'85 ritornò in missione: Vicario Generale, Economo e Procuratore diocesano (85-90) e poi Parroco a Shimulia (90-95).
Rientrato in Italia per cure, dal '97 al '99 collaborò nel ministero con la comunità di Udine.
Nel 1999 l'ultimo tentativo di continuare a lavorare in Bangladesh e nel 2001 il rientro definitivo in Italia, sempre con nostalgia del Bangladesh: « Mi dispiace di terminare così (a me fanno bella impressione e mi danno tanto coraggio gli anziani sul campo) questa vita missionaria così difficile ma così meravigliosa...».
Instancabile; «con un comportamento semplice, che portava avanti i suoi doveri e i suoi compiti senza parlare, in silenzio» (P. Rigon). «Ha dato testimonianza attraverso la fedeltà ai compiti che gli erano stati assegnati» ( P. Garello).

Fr. Bruno Dri died on 3 February 2013, in hospital at Parma, where he had been admitted with pneumonia. Born in Porpetto (Udine, Italy), on 14 February 1928, he was 85 years old.
There are two important figures in the vocation of Fr. Bruno. First of all, his mother, Giuseppina. In the January 1998 issue of Missionari Saveriani, Fr. Dri remembered that a woman in the village said to his mother that it was madness to allow her son to go off to distant and barbarian lands. His mother replied: «Perhaps it was madness, but it was a gesture of great faith ». The second important figure was Fr. Amedeo Pelizzo, who was then a young priest of the Archdiocese of Udine and who spoke of Bruno to the Xaverians in Vicenza: «He is a truly upright young boy and it is widely said that he is the best adolescent in his village... he possesses the most wonderful qualities for being a success. He stands out among his classmates for his intelligence».
On 15 October 1941 Fr. Pelizzo accompanied Bruno to the Institute in Vicenza, where he attended the second and third years of junior high school, before moving to Grumone (CR) for two years of senior high school. He began Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli on 8 September 1945 and made his First Profession on 24 September 1946. He then attended the first year of lyceum in Parma and the second and third years in Desio. This was followed by two years as prefect (1949-51) at Udine. He concluded the formation program with his theology studies in Piacenza. In presenting him for the ordained ministries, his formators words (as in their previous reports) confirmed the earlier assessment made by Fr. Pelizzo: «He is a very good and generous young man. He cultivates his life of piety. He is docile, humble, sensitive and somewhat timid». He was ordained priest in Santa Chiara, Piacenza, on 3 October1954.
In April 1955, Fr. Dri was already at work in the mission of Bangladesh (which was then known as East Pakistan). During his long missionary apostolate, he carried out the important tasks of parish priest, religious superior, administrator and vicar general of the diocese of Khulna.
From 1955 until 1960, he served as assistant priest at Shimulia and then parish priest at Satkhira. During that period, the Bishop gave him and Fr. Crestani the task of teaching the catechism in the various villages. Fr. Rigon comments: «I don’t know how long he carried out this work, but it was an exacting task because there was neither a church nor a house for the priest ». Fr. Garello adds: «Fr. Dri spoke the language well; he could hold conversations with the people using their popular language as well as adopting a conversation-debate style of language to propose the Christian faith ».
In the period 1960-63 he served as Religious Superior and then Treasurer and diocesan Procurator. In 1964-65 he obtained a diploma in Social Leadership at the Coady International Institute (Canada).
On his return to Bangladesh he was director of the High School of Shelabunia and assisted in the parish. In the years 1968-80 he was Treasurer and Procurator of the Diocese and Vicar General.
He left Bangladesh in 1980 and was Treasurer at the Parma Procura until 1984. During the academic year 1984-85, he obtained a certificate in Pastoral Studies at the East Asian Institute of Manila.
In 1985 he returned to the missions, where he served as Vicar General, Treasurer and diocesan Procurator (1985-90) and then as parish priest at Shimulia (1990-95).
He returned to Italy for medical treatment and, in the period 1997-99, he helped the community of Udine with the pastoral ministry.
In 1999 he made a final attempt to continue working in Bangladesh before returning definitively to Italy in 2001; he always felt nostalgia for Bangladesh: « I am sorry that things had to end this way (I am impressed and encouraged by the elderly confreres at the front line); this missionary life is so difficult and so wonderful...».
Fr. Bruno was tireless; in the words of Fr. Rigon: «his behavior was simple and he carried out his duties and tasks in silence». Fr. Garello adds: «He bore witness through his fidelity to the tasks that had been assigned to him».
