P. Abdon Fantelli

Intorno alle 6.00 del 13.10.2006, in Casa Madre, è morto P. Abdon Fantelli. Era in cura a Parma dal 1998 e aveva quasi 89 anni, essendo nato a Raspano di Cassacco (Udine) il 12.11.1917.
Entrato tra i Saveriani a Vicenza il 7.10.1930, percorse regolarmente l’iter formativo saveriano allora vigente: ginnasio inferiore a Vicenza (30-33); ginnasio superiore a Grumone (33-35); Noviziato e Prima Professione (12.9.36) a S. Pietro in Vincoli; Liceo a Parma (36-39); Prefettato a Vicenza (39-40); Teologia a Parma (40-44). Fu ordinato presbitero il 28.5.1944.
Dopo l’ordinazione fu destinato alla casa di Vicenza come Padre-Prefetto (44-46); fu successivamente Padre Spirituale a Udine (46-47), a Zelarino (47-48), a Piacenza (48-50).
Furono anni movimentati e duri: con il dopo guerra, in case appena aperte, tra difficoltà economiche; complicati dalla comparsa della tbc che lo costrinse a un prolungato soggiorno in sanatorio ad Arco (Trento). Evento, questo, affrontato in serena letizia, grato verso i superiori e quanti operavano per la sua guarigione e nella fiduciosa attesa della missione: «Invidio i miei carissimi Confratelli che fanno tanto bene in Missione e in Patria… ma credo che Gesù accoglierà anche la mia povera vita, le mie povere preghiere, i miei desideri e anche la mia inazione per il trionfo del suo Regno» (10.1.50).
Seguirono dieci anni (50-60) di graduale ripresa delle forze fisiche e di attività di P. Spirituale nelle comunità di Udine e Macomer. Servizio prestato con tanta umiltà e un grande concetto del compito affidatogli: «il Signore lo sa quanto desidererei avere una sufficiente preparazione spirituale e intellettuale e le forze fisiche perché i Superiori potessero disporre di me liberamente!» (4.6.52).
Nell’agosto del 59 ricevette con grande gioia la destinazione alla missione dell’Indonesia. Questo il suo commento: «spero di potermi consacrare interamente per la salvezza di quelle anime»; (16.8.59). «non desidero altro che amare il Signore e farLo amare da quei poveri nostri fratelli pagani» (16.11.60). Dopo lo studio dell’indonesiano a Padang e l’iniziazione al lavoro missionario a Pekambaru (63-64), fu parroco a Bagansi Api Api (63-67): «se si eccettuano i nostri cari lebbrosi, siamo in un deserto … le scrivo questo non perché siamo scoraggiati: se non saremo battezzatori, saremo testimoni…» (28.4.64). Fu quindi assistente disciplinare nel Seminario di Padang (67-69): compito che gli risultò particolarmente ingrato: «vedendomi così inutile, … più volte sono stato sul punto di chiedere al Generale di lasciare la missione, per essere mandato in America, dove avrei potuto fare almeno qualcosa come sacerdote» (24.6.68).
Dal 69 al 75 fu parroco di Air Molek, una missione nuova e vasta, lungo il fiume Indraghiri. E poi, per cinque anni, a Bukittinggi (75-80). Gli ultimi 16 anni indonesiani (82-98) P. Abdon li ha trascorsi al Toasebio a Jakarta. Tra i 360 mila abitanti della parrocchia, a maggioranza cinese e quasi tutti buddisti, egli ha trovato il suo lavoro ideale: la preparazione dei catecumeni al battesimo, l’animazione della Legio Mariae, l’assistenza pastorale agli ammalati e agli anziani, la visita alle famiglie.
P. Abdon è morto nel sonno; forse, se gli fosse stato possibile congedarsi, avrebbe ripetuto quanto scrisse in occasione del 60° di Professione, il 16.10.1996: «Non posso e non debbo che ringraziare il Signore della Vocazione Religiosa/Sacerdotale/Missionaria nella nostra umile Congregazione – come il nostro Beato Fondatore amava chiamarla. … [Ringrazio] tutti i Superiori e i Confratelli della bontà, carità, comprensione, pazienza verso di me… [per parte mia, non ho mai avuto], posso dirlo sinceramente, pensieri e sentimenti di avversità, rancore e risentimento verso nessuno"

Fr. Abdon Fantelli died at six o’clock in the morning of October 13, 2006 in the Mother House, where he had been in care since 1998.Born in Raspano di Cassacco (Udine) on November 12 1917, he was almost 89 years old.
He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on October 7, 1930 and completed the Xaverian formation program of those times: junior high school in Vicenza (1930-33); senior high school in Grumone (1933-35); Novitiate and First Profession (Sept. 12 1936) in S. Pietro in Vincoli; liceo in Parma (1936-39); a year as Prefect in Vicenza (1939-40); Theology in Parma (1940-44). He was ordained priest on May 28, 1944.
After his ordination he was assigned to the community of Vicenza as Priest-Prefect (1944-46); thereafter he was Spiritual Director in Udine (1946-47), Zelarino (1947-48) and Piacenza (1948-50). These were the busy and difficult post-war years with newly opened houses and financial difficulties, a situation made more complicated when he contracted tuberculosis and had to spend a lengthy period of time in a sanatorium in Arco (Trento). He dealt with this experience with serene cheerfulness and gratitude towards his superiors and all those who worked for his recovery, and in the confident expectation of an assignment to the missions: «I envy my confreres who are doing so much good in the Missions and at home… but I believe that Jesus will accept also the offering of my own poor life, my poor prayers, my desires and also my inactivity for the triumph of his Kingdom» (Jan. 10 1950).
This was followed by ten difficult years (1950-60) of gradual recovery of his physical strength and a return to his activity as Spiritual Director in the communities of Udine and Macomer. He served in this capacity with great humility and a high esteem of the task entrusted to him: «the Lord knows how much I would like to possess sufficient spiritual and intellectual preparation and physical strength so that my Superiors might freely dispose of me!» (June 4 1952).
In August 1959 he received an assignment to the mission of Indonesia with great joy. This was his comment: «I hope to be able to consecrate myself entirely for the salvation of those souls» (Aug. 16 1959). «I desire nothing more than to love the Lord and make Him loved by the poor» (Nov. 16 1960). After studying the Indonesian language in Padang, and his introduction to the missionary work in Pekambaru (1963-64), he was parish priest in Bagansi Api Api (1963-67): «we are in a desert, unless you count our dear lepers…I am writing this to you not because we are discouraged: if we cannot baptize, we shall be witnesses…» (April 28 1964). He was then disciplinary assistant in the Seminary of Padang (1967-69): a task that was particularly unpleasant to him: «I feel so useless,…often I was only a step away from asking the Superior General’s permission to leave the mission, to be sent to America, where I could at least have done something as a priest» (June 6 1968).
From 1969 until 1975 he was parish priest of Air Molek, a new and vast mission situated along the river Indraghiri. Thereafter he worked as parish priest for five years at Bukittinggi (1975-80). He spent his final 16 years in Indonesia (1982-98) at Toasebio in Jakarta. Among the 360,000 inhabitants of the parish, the majority of whom were Chinese and almost all of them Buddhists, he found his ideal work: the preparation of the catechumens for baptism, animation of the Legion of Mary, pastoral care of the sick and the elderly and visits to families.
Fr. Abdon died in his sleep; perhaps, if he had had the chance to say farewell, he would have repeated the words he wrote on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his Religious Profession on Oct. 16 1996: «I can only thank the Lord for my Religious/Priestly/Missionary Vocation in our humble Congregation – as our Blessed Founder loved to call it.…[I thank] all the Superiors and Confreres for the kindness, love, understanding and patience they have shown to me … [I have never harbored], in all sincerity, hostile thoughts and feelings, ill will or resentment towards anyone».
