Il 25 giugno 2004, alle prime ore dell’alba, è morto nella casa saveriana di Kavimvira (Congo R. D.) Fr. Luciano Ghini, «Bwana Frera» (Monsignor Fratello) come veniva chiamato dai Congolesi.
Il confratello aveva subito un intervento chirurgico per sospetti linfonodi alla laringe nel lontano 1982 e, da allora, durante le vacanze in Italia, si era sottoposto a regolari controlli medici. L’ultimo controllo, nell’agosto dello scorso anno, aveva evidenziato altre patologie di una certa rilevanza: diabete e bronchite asmatiforme. Rientrato a Luvungi (Congo R. D.), dopo qualche mese aveva incominciato ad accusare forti e diffusi dolori. Ultimamente, proprio perché si stava debilitando a vista d’occhio, si era deciso di portarlo a Kavimvira vicino a Uvira per poterlo curare meglio. Purtroppo, a causa della situazione militare della zona, il viaggio da Luvungi fu possibile soltanto il 21 giugno.
Aveva 61 anni, essendo nato a Brescia il 7 febbraio 1943.
Fr. Luciano entrò tra i Saveriani, a Desio (MI), nel novembre 1973. «Avevo circa trent’anni –raccontò in una intervista apparsa su Missionari Saveriani, Febbraio 2004– avevo sentito la vocazione missionaria molti anni prima. Poi mio padre è morto. Io ero il più grande e, non essendo la nostra una famiglia benestante, sono rimasto a casa. Quando ho finito di sistemare tutti i miei fratelli, allora sono partito. Nel frattempo avevo cominciato a frequentare la comunità saveriana di Brescia. Allora c'erano P. G. Toninelli e P. S. Pirola. Io avevo 14-15 anni. Nel tempo libero, aiutavo a preparare le mostre di oggetti artigianali da vendere a favore delle missioni. Così mantenevo i collegamenti».
Nel 1974 passò a Tavernerio per il Noviziato e dove il 31/08/1975 emise la Prima professione. Passò quindi ad Ancona dove frequentò un biennio di teologia per laici (75-77).
Nel 1977 fu destinato alla missione dello Zaire, l’attuale Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Così rispondeva nell’occasione al Superiore Generale: «Ho ricevuto con immensa gioia la lettera della mia destinazione, anche perché speravo proprio di andare nello Zaire» (7.12.76).
Dal 77 al 78 studiò il francese a Parigi e, come aveva fatto ad Ancona, frequentò, due giorni la settimana, un corso di meccanica. Nell’agosto del 1978 giunse a Bukavu e dopo lo studio del swahili iniziò il suo servizio missionario: fu Economo nella comunità di Luvungi (79-80), Procuratore di Missione a Bukavu (80-97), incaricato delle costruzioni a Kavinvira (97-2000), Economo a Luvungi (2000-2004). Il suo servizio fu inframmezzato da quasi due anni trascorsi in Italia (82-84) per l’intervento alla laringe e per la professione Perpetua emessa a Parma il 3.12.1982.
Fr. Luciano fu davvero, come gli augurò il Superiore Generale (25.11.76) «un vero missionario, segno della presenza di Dio in mezzo alla gente che non conosce ancora la salvezza cristiana, un fratello che aiuta gli altri a realizzarsi come figli Dio, un apostolo che annuncia l’amore che Dio ha avuto per noi».
Ora, scrive il P. Dovigo (7.7.2004), lo ricordano in tanti: «la gente di Kadutu, del grande mercato. Quante volte, con la sua camionetta, è passato nel quartiere! Quante volte ha acquistato il materiale necessario per le parrocchie lontane di Kasongo, Uvira e Bukavu! Lo ricordano gli impiegati dei vari uffici, dove si recava per documenti, patenti, permessi; i doganieri, con i quali era in contatto per sdoganare il materiale proveniente dall’Italia; i poveri, che lo circondavano nelle vie della città o lo visitavano a casa; i cristiani di Luvungi, con i quali ha lavorato ultimamente, per costruire scuole, la grande sala e la biblioteca; i suoi operai, che lui amava, aiutava, visitava: conosceva le loro povere abitazioni, i bambini, le mamme, le famiglie e, a volte, si fermava a mangiare con amicizia e fraternità. Lo ricordano le suore di diversi istituti, perché Luciano era disponibile per aiuti d’ogni genere. Lo ricordano i confratelli per tutti servizi fatti nell’accompagnare, nel dare, nel procurare le cose più disparate: il cibo d’ogni giorno, le lamiere per costruzioni, i quaderni per le scuole».

Br. Luciano Ghini, known as “Bwana Frera” (= Monsignor Brother) among the Congolese, died in the early hours of the morning of June 25 2004, in the Xaverian House of Kavinvira (Democratic Republic of Congo). In 1982, he underwent surgery for suspected lymph nodes on the larynx; since then, he had regular medical check-ups during his vacations in Italy. The last of these, in August 2003, revealed that he was suffering from quite serious forms of diabetes and bronchitis. On his return to Luvungi (D. R. Congo), he began to complain fo great widespread pain. Lately, as his condition began to visibly worsen, it was decided that he should be taken to Kavinvira, near Uvira, for more suitable treatment. Unfortunately, the military situation in the area meant that the journey from Luvungi had to be put off until June 21.
Born in Brescia, on Feb. 7 1943, Br. Ghini was 61 years old.
He joined the Xaverians in Desio (MI) in November 1973. He spoke about his vocation in an interview published by “Missionari Saveriani” in February 2004: “I was about 30 years old when I joined, though many years previously I had already felt that I had a vocation. However, my father died, and I had to remain at home to look after the family because I was the eldest and our financial position was not very good. I left to join the Xaverians when my family was more secure. In the meantime, I had been frequenting the Xaverian community of Brescia, where I got to know Frs. G. Toninelli and S. Pirola. I was about 14-15 years old then. In my free time, I used to help prepare the handicrafts that were sold at exhibitions on behalf of the missions. This was how I kept up my contacts with the Xaverians.”
Br. Luciano went to Tavernerio in 1974 for Novitiate; he made his First Profession there on Aug. 31, 1975. He then moved on to Ancona where he attended a two-year theology course for lay people (1975-77). In 1977 he was assigned to the Mission of Zaire, today’s Dem. Republic of Congo. On that occasion, he wrote to the Superior General: “I received my letter of assignment with great joy, especially since Zaire was the mission I was hoping for” (Dec. 7 1976). He studied French for one year (1977-78) in Paris, and, as he had done in Ancona, he attended a mechanics course twice a week.
He arrived in Bukavu in August 1978 and began his missionary work after studying Swahili: Administrator of the community of Lunvungi (1979-80), Mission Procurator in Bukavu (1980-97), in charge of construction work in Kavinvira (1997-2000), Administrator in Luvungi (2000-04). His service was interrupted by almost two years in Italy (1982-84) for surgery on the larynx and his Final Profession which he made in Parma on Dec. 3 1982.
Br. Luciano was, as the Superior General wished him (Nov. 25 1976) “a real missionary, a sign of God’s presence among the people that do not yet know of the Christian salvation; a brother, who helps others to fulfill their vocation as children of God; an apostle, who proclaims God’s love for all”.
Today, writes Fr. Dovigo, many people fondly remember him: “By the people of Kadutu, and the large market. How many times he passed through their district with his truck! How many times he bought the necessary supplies for the far-off parishes of Kasongo, Uvira and Bukavu! He is remembered by the clerks of the various offices he went to for documents, driving licenses and permits; by the customs officers, with whom he was in constant contact for the importation of goods from Italy; by the poor, who used to surround him as he walked through the streets of the town and who also came to visit him at home; by the Christians of Luvungi, with whom he worked lately, building schools, the great hall and the library; by his workers, whom he loved, helped and visited; he knew their poor homes, their children, the mothers, the families and he would sometimes eat with them in a spirit of friendship and brotherhood. The sisters of the various Institutes remember him. The confreres remember him for the wide range of activities he carried out: buying the daily food, construction materials, and school books”.
